:lol OMG 360 numbers are just surprising smg not surprising to me and ace combat did more than I thought it would.

Also this is the first time the 360's outsold the ps2 and in doing that it also outsold the ps3 not by much but just funny for some reason.

You may need some , or ; whereas : are well appreciated. Thanks. And don't forget it's useful to breathe.

If TP and SMG are bombs..

what are 360 and PS3 games..?

I happen to agree, because I remember Hot Shots Golf 5 at 150k for its first week being a massive success, and even the following weeks when it decreased down to, what was it, 75k and such it was still a great success.

I understand the userbase differences, but people really tend to over react.

No, most of the level-headed people in these threads called HSG5 sales good for PS3, and an epic fucking disaster for the series.

As opposed to Mario, which is selling mediocre by Wii Nintendo software standards, and *worst ever* for a new installment in the series.

Lupin3

Targeting terrorists with a D-Pad
Go Ace Combat! Awesome games deserves good numbers, and considering the install base in Japan, so...

They are also bombs. However, SMG is the big Wii game. Surely it would be comparable to a franchise like FF or GT on the PS3.

Unless you count 2006 when the PS3 wasn't out yet.

Well be glad its selling on par with Mario Party.

I'm a bit disappointed with Galaxy and Wii numbers. I thought Galaxy would at least boost the Wii to above 80k.

Then you remember wrong. People were gloating how HSG5 won't even come close to HSG4 sales. And I agree with them. HSG5 is a bomb. A bomb that everybody could see coming considering the userbase. But a bomb nonetheless.

hopefully Super Mario Galaxy will *drive* Wii sales to core gamers, even if it doesn't win over many of the casuals which make up the majority of the system's fanbase in Japan.

Europe (based on strong MP3 sales) already has a nice balance imho, and based on Twilight Princess sales in America, i'm confident that America will show that it does too when the game comes out next week... but hopefully this will show real legs in Japan as it wins over more gamers into buying the system.

i'd be very interested to know what the game shipped, and how much was left on shelves. that'd be a pretty good indication of whether or not Nintendo themselves will be disapointed.

is this koei's second disaster on the wii? i can see them focusing on the ps3 now, at least they're doing some decent numbers on it.

There are some things I don't understand:

How the hell did Ace Combat 6 succeed where Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Eternal Sonata failed?

250k first week for Mario? In Japan 2D Mario > 3D Mario, yes, but wow, that is surprisingly underwhelming.

Why? Mario games are generally bigger than Mario Party games. I'd also prefer the superior game that appeals more to me as a gamer to be selling better, not worse than a mini-game rehash. :/

On a global scale it was an effin success.. (Not sure bout Europe but in NA it outsold Gears of War)

Sure in Japan people didnt eat it up.. but it was stupid from Nintendos side (no retail GC version)

The only concern would be that Zelda is dwindling as a series in Japan..

But Zelda PH sold decently and is probably going to hit one million units within this year..

So that cant be the case..

That's easy enough to answer. Retailer pre-orders were 700k. So at least that amount went out. Sales were 250k. So that leaves what - 450k clogging up the shelves in Japan? Good thing the holiday season is coming or I'd say it would take another month just to clear that.

I am obviously talking about japanese sales. Everyone agrees TP is a great success outside of Japan.

Twilight Princess is one of the best selling next-gen games. It outsold Gears of War worldwide.

Probably because ace combat has more mass appeal.

As i said..stupid decision.. Zelda GC on retail would have sold an additional 150k.. if not more
(I think that was the split in NA too.. about 7 to 3)

A little underwhelming I expected 300k. Mario isn't doing incredible numbers anymore. On the Gamecube Sunshine was outsold by Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. I remember reading that Mario Kart 64 was the best selling N64 game. Mario is still a huge franchise with a loyal fanbase, but it isn't a earth shattering event anymore.

I honestly see Mario Galaxy following the same track as Mario Party 8 did. Maybe a bit less. But 1 million + isn't out of the question.

wth seriously.. NSMB is going to sell 5 million copies in a few weeks and people still call Mario a fading franchise

I thought for sure SMG would hit at least 350k for the first week. If next week's sales of it aren't at 100k, I'd get really worried.

It makes complete sense to some people. When it's selling well make light of how far apart it is from competitors. Then when it's not selling so well forget that it's the leader and compare it to it's competitors.

Lost Odyssey failed, what does that even mean, it hasn't even came out yet. Ace combat didn't really succeed over the other two and I'd say it was a little low, the hardware sales is from the price drop and better hardware (HDMI and 65nm cpu).

Mario is Nintendo's staple franchise and it is indeed disappointing. You can't compare it mingol5 as that is a casual series mainly, the playstation 3 isn't at the moment. If it doesn't outsell mario party 8, that is just awful.

Sunshine was also outsold by Mario Party 4.

Also, RE: N64; Mario Kart 64 at 1.71 million, Mario 64 at 1.64 million.

I think that NSBM is an exeption to the rule, the first new Mario 2D mario since god knows how long, that's what made it succesfull. Perhaps Motion Sickness is also an Issue, the same reason why FPS games don't sell in Japan. We also have no idea about the shipments, retailers wanted 750k, but perhaps Nintendo cut their supplies in half, shortages are already common in the US and Europe.

farnham said:

Are you combining GCN and Wii sales to make this statement? I mean, then it would only be fair to combine PC sales for Gears total when it comes out right?

The only concern would be that Zelda is dwindling as a series in Japan..

But Zelda PH sold decently and is probably going to hit one million units within this year..

One is on a console, one is on a handheld.

The same limitations to TP's audience applies to Mario's as well...it ain't portable.

I could have swon LO released in Japan. Oh Well.

To be honest, I knew Galaxy wasn't going to sell as well as NSMB in Japan. But the discrepancy between both is immensely large, and considering how much Nintendo is pushing it in Japan (at least 9 different TV Spots plus physical adverts) expected better than 250k.

OK, so what will Mario Galaxy have to end up selling for it not to be a bomb?

We have FF7:CC on the PSP and a much larger userbase which is going to seem to settle in around 750k, and FF7:CC was considered a great success.

If Mario outdoes that game, will it still be called a bomb?
