In response to Jonny's rhethorical question, I think lots of GAF pundits expected weaker 1st week FF III sales and stronger NSMB sales (from the FF boost, ironically). I think though that the boost, from all the new owners who picked up the DS in the last few weeks, may be delayed, after people have beaten FFIII, just in time for the ramp up to the holidays.

So, here's a question. The DS is *THE* must have system in Japan. Just like the PS2 was a year or two back. Will the DS, like the PS2, plateau just above 20 mil units, or will the new non-gamers give it the leg up it needs to really reopen the market?

30 million (the only game machine in Japan to do so) is probably a bigger question.
35+ million may not be impossible. I imagine one or two more DS revisions will come yet (one with built-in flash RAM for virtual handheld/game downloads for instance ala the Wii).

Did anyone guess the DS would be even halve this successful? The videogame market is becoming the DS game market in Japan. If the Wii sells on the back of the DS, they might as well rename Abrihabra (you know, the electronics district of Japan) the Mushroom Kingdom.
