PlayStation Portable

April 30th?

Anyway, I doubt this will become a trend, but if it does then maybe it'll finally force devs like Namco and Capcom to start supporting the damn DS & Wii already. :lol

Do we even know if this company sells Wiis and DS's? For all we know, they only had PS stuff and decided to get rid of their video game merchandise.

Why single out Sony products instead of blanket stating that the video game selection was being cut off?

If it's affective 30th April, can't one of the JGAFfers check out one of these locations to see what's the deal-e-yo?

Ok, that made me laugh. A lot.

Dunno, why not just say all sony video game products instead of listing each system?

1: It was mostly a joke.
2: I don't know what all they carry, so it was just an idea.

Yet another overreaction on GAF.

No one is overreacting. It's more common to see people willing to side with cautious optimism:

1) The store only held Sony products, or
2) The store has small shelf space that can only accommodate the DS and/or Wii, or
3) The store is a regional case that finds little profit in video games, or
4) etc.

This isn't a wise move. PS2 sales are still not as bad as Gamecube ones. And Gamecube has been supported during its whole lifetime. It's just...well dumb.

And what about PSP ? We don't really know why but its sales increased this year and it would be incoherant to bring them out of shelves.

For god's sake, please Ntards, don't make this thread explode in a flood of insanity.

What's insane is keeping Playstation products on Japanese shelves any moment longer.

The place is called ハローマック (Hello-Mac).

It looks like a nationwide toy store chain with 150 locations across Japan according to this page.

A picture of one such retail location is here.

Wow. Big Wow. I am speechless. Sad moment for gamer around the world.

Is a 150 locations a big chain, medium chain or small chain ? I don't know Japanese store, so I need to ask. How big is the yodobashi chain ? How many location ?

Just to get an approximate comparison, KB Toys currently has about 605 stores in the US. If you figure Japan has half the population of the US, a chain the size of KB in Japan would have ~302 stores. Hello-Mac has 150, so is about half as prevalent as KB in the US.

Yodobashi, OTOH, is more like Best Buy.

So I wake up in the middle of the night to get something to eat (something I never do). I check GAF. I read this thread.

"Hah hah what's going on here? .... ........ .. .....

.....

.........

WTF?"

I'm literally reading this with my mouth hanging open. So surreal. I'm dreaming or something...

Do you guys realize that sign only attains that specific shop chain and not all Japan, right?:lol

Do you guy realize, that a japanese retailer - no, a japanese retail chain - stops selling a pretty famous japanese brand, is frontpage material, no?

less than 90 posts to go until this'll turn into the largest thread of the past few months!

and I've only added to the madness

Well, some idea for getting 90+ post :
- post the picture in PS3forums, complete with the translation, and discuss the replies in this thread.
- discuss about how (and when) this change may be duplicated in US and Europe.
- post lots of lol, wow etc posts.

Question to Vinnk :
Did Famicom Dojo only have One PS3 (Old reliable) in the shop ? Have you ever asked hiro whether he would order more PS3 (to replace Old Reliable) should it ever sold to customer in the future ?

Thanks for the reply. But even though Japan has half the population of US, how big is Japan compared to US ? I think Japan is much less than half the size of US (maybe a quarter or even smaller ? I am not good at geography). Is it more fair to compare the population compared to size ?

One more question : How expensive is the land rent in Japan ? I know Tokyo is one of the most expensive city in the world, if not the #1, in regards to property price (and rent price).

Japan is about the same size as California, though it's roughly 85% mountainous and therefore uninhabitable space. It's a wee bit crowded.

Rent is highly dependent upon location and type/quality of dwelling, so YMMV as is the case everywhere. Here's a cost of living ranking for cities worldwide.

But enough of this OT stuff.

If that store dropped just the PS3, i'd be more inclined to think this was a huge problem.

Dropping all the systems (including the PSP, which isn't doing too bad for itself) makes me think that the store itself had a falling out with Sony.

Can a chain like this drop only the PS3? I guess that's the essential question. Would Sony allow any major retailer in their regular supply chain to continue stocking PS2s and refuse PS3s?

I don't know the answer but my Spidey sense tells me perhaps the store first intended to only drop the PS3.

Good point.

Perhaps that was the contention?

The store wanted to drop the PS3, but Sony retorted saying they'd pull support entirely if they did. A cost/benefit measure was done, and the store decided to go that route.

Sounds plausible...

I really would like to know if it was the whole chain and not this one store though. If it was the whole chain, despite being only 150 stores, that points to a much bigger problem.

I think that store made a stupid decision... Of course the Playstation brand is suffering right now.. but pulling out is not a good strategy in a long term.. N64 and GC sold horribly compared to PSone and PS2.. but the Wii and the DS is now the hottest Item in the gaming market over there.. That doesnt show that the Playstation brand might gain in popularity in the forseeable future.. But at least it shows that the market changes dynamically and does not stick with one brand.. The Wii 2 might lose against the PS4.. How will this store look when that happens..? Plus.. why are they limiting their own selection ? Having a wider array of offers is always much better then only selling a selected few products.. especially for such a big electronics chain..
Its an anecdotal evidence for the current slump of SCEJ nonetheless..

Perhaps they want to earn their money now, and not with possible products in a possible future?

Shelf space is expensive, as has already been elaborated. So what do you fill it with? Perhaps products that sell better?
I mean, there is nowhere written that they will sell more DS/Wii instead. For all we know they could fill their shelves with LOLI rape schoolkid porn ...

maybe sony decided to stop stocking the store... maybe the store decided sony was evil... maybe they wanted to stop selling the ps3 and sony said '**** you then'... maybe they wanted to stop selling the ps3 and sony said 'only if you stop selling the psp and ps2 as well' and the store said 'okay we'll do that then'.

we don't really have any idea right now.

we don't really know if this has anything to do with sales at this point...

are they a big enough retailer for this to impact sales?

still if nothing else, uk resistance will have something really funny to say about it.
