Question to Vinnk :
Did Famicom Dojo only have One PS3 (Old reliable) in the shop ? Have you ever asked hiro whether he would order more PS3 (to replace Old Reliable) should it ever sold to customer in the future ?

I don't belive he plans to buy any more for the store. But I am sure he would order one for a customer if requested.

Is it a big retailer who stops offering Playstation products? Or a little one that only had Playstations because it was such a succes the last generation, but other than that doesn't offer anything gaming related?

If it's the former, than wow. This close after launch, as the successor of the most succesfull console in history. And on top of that also stop offering PSP, which isn't doing that bad. WTH? Even the Gamecube didn't get that treatment.

I really wonder what has given the Playstation brand the reputation of pure evil in such a short time. I boggles the mind actually.

I hope this trend doesn't continue, it would be really dull if only Nintendo was in the Japanese market (I know, de facto it already is, but you know...).

He already visits all the Videogame stores in his town. That would be quite an imposition. Although it might not be too rude to ask him if he can make a phone call or two.......

I still find it amusing that someone would go to a place named Famicom Dojo to buy a Sony console...

Well, the guy's been open since the Famicom days, it seems. It's a legacy, mang.

The vast majority of pages in Weekly Famitsu are for non nintendo hardware and software, but they still have the 'fami' in the title. Similarly, lots of stores have kept it.

There is a holocaust of Sony systems in the making in Japan right now, the world cannot just stand by and respond, what's next? Are Sony products going to be tattooed with numbers to differentiate them? Perhaps there will be separate bins?

This fascist Nintendo regime and it's collaborators, the retailers, must be stopped!

For all we know they could fill their shelves with LOLI rape schoolkid porn ...

Wouldn't surprise me. One store i saw in Japan floor one was electronics, floor two was white goods, floors 3 and 4 were porn. I came home with no washing machine that day.

.... wait, WHAT?! I've seen a lot of things in my time, but a store no longer carrying a console due to low demand? Am I reading this right?!?? Holy crap...

I remember talking to a Target employee back a few years. He said they were going to discontinue carrying the Cube. FWIW.

How about the Gizmondo? The Jaguar? The 3DO? I don't think this is unprecedented.

Vinnk : Will you visit a Hellow Mac store ?

I guess it's more or less like a Toys'R'Us.

I would love to guys, but as I mentioned earlier I have never seen one in my life. I travel quite a bit around Japan and I would never pass a gaming or toy store without going in it. I have been to dozens of Toys R' Us stores here but never a ?????? (Hello Mac). If anyone can tell me where one is in Kyushu I would be happy to go, but I can't find one.

Cheesemeister,

I've noticed you've translated the MC sales summary in this thread, and I think you also did it last week, which is great, thanks. If you have time could make this a regular feature, and add it to the other info at the start of the thread?

Well, for comparison a lot of retailers in Europe and Australia pulled Nintendo products from their shelves in 02-03, even after they'd made a killing with the N64 only a couple of years earlier. These shops are surely suffering now, as the DS and Wii are now the top 2 products, but they burnt their bridges with Nintendo (Harvey Norman in Australia comes to mind). Over the years a lot of shops have only sold the market leader's products - I remember when some smaller toy shops only sold Sega back in the day, and I had to go to larger chain stores in the city to get NES and SNES games.

But Japan? I guess you can get away with only stocking DS stuff now, since it has dominated the market for almost two years.

If we can get some more info about this I'll get it up on the interwebs, it's pretty big news if it's as it seems.

Cheese, have you found out any more info on this chain? Or have any of the other Japan GAFers ever seen one?

I give the consumers more credit than that . . . they are not just drive by blind-loyalty to brand. I think brand loyalty becomes kinda weak when you are making a $400+ toy purchase.

I sure agree with that . . . I find Japan's rejection of hi-def console gaming in general rather distressing. Neither the PS3 nor the 360 sells in Japan.

What is the penetration of HDTVs in Japan? Are they broadcasting significant amounts of HDTV content? Has Japan rejected hi-def due to the demise of the analog MUSE hi-def system?

They weren't so much loyal to the brand as they were loyal to what the brand stood for. Relatively cheap gaming, with a promise of never really lacking in content. The consumers have always been fiercely loyal to this. It's just that what the Wii is offering adheres closer to it than the PS3 or the 360.

Thanks! I live in Oita-Ken. This one is about an hour from my house. I am really busy this week, but I can try to stop in the next week. One of my friends lives in Isahaya (Nagasaki-ken) so I can see if he knows of the shop, but he's not really much of a gamer.

Someone post this on ps3forums.

Someone already posted it there. Not the usual fare from that place however despite a few attempting to spin that the future will bring that retailer's redemption or something. (just wait until PlaystationEye comes and show the Wii for the gimmick it is or something to that effect :lol )

For the most part, everyone is just confused and taken aback.

Maybe I wil call tomorrow. So the question I am asking is "Got any PS3s?" and if the answer is "no" follow it up with "Can you tell me why?"

Does that about cover it?

In any case. I need to get some sleep. It's past 1:00am here.

I can't say the number of HDTV owners in Japan, but I can tell you the type of people that have them tend to use them for things other than gaming. There is plenty of HD broadcasting though.

While there are no hard reliable numbers Japan's slightly behind the US and way ahead of Euroland.

I find it odd to see people saying "They never stopped carrying the Gamecube" but not "They never stopped carrying the Xbox / X360". Or did they? I don't remember any stories about retailers dropping the Xbox, despite it selling 1/8th as much as the Cube.

I just had such a wrong thought. The PS3 is the Vanilla Ice of gaming consoles. The most popular thing in the world for two months, and then just drops off the charts.

Shipped or sold? 200.000 copies shipped, 10.000 sold ;)
Yes, its a joke, mostly aimed at people who diss Sony for operating with shipped numbers hehe.
