Can someone tell me why the PSP sold 32k with NO software in the top 30? That's so strange. I mean, if it was because of the Lumines thing or something, that would be on the charts.

Something happened last MC thread when it jumped to 33k. It's actually down from last week.

To anyone who's got better access to DS lite's numbers (too lazy to check all the MC-threads): What's the lowest number of DS lites sold in a week? I can't even remember when the last time it was below 100k...

On the subject of DS numbers, it feels off. Maybe we'll feel the brunt of it in next week's sales, given the saturday release.

On the whole NSMB debate. I've never been into the Mario games much (so I'm not tainted by nostalgia). I've finished Mario 1, 2, Lost Levels, 3, SMW, and NSMB.

I really liked NSMB. It was probably the best Mario game I had played, however it was way too easy. Also, going back for all the coins wasn't interesting enough so I gave up. Basically, I'd say it was a great game but had no longevity at all.

I think the secret as to why it's selling so massively is because of the mini games. My wife and I was hooked on them for a while. And about 8 of us used to play them at DS parties. I never played them solo, but my wife did, for a very long time. I honestly believe this is the reason why the game won't stop selling. Non gamers and party gamers love the mini games.

Results, Analysis, & Expectations
● 360: Established trend of not selling at all. This will not change. 3k now until the the XBOX3 comes out.

● Wii: Established that this will sell very well. This will continue, as shipments have definitely solidified. 65-70k for the rest of the summer.

360 - 3.2k*
Wii - 68k**

Are you being sarcastic? Cause if not, it really improves the sound... Canvas Curse sounded even awesomer than I though!

Anyway, about NSMB, I don´t understand why people complain about that game and, at the same time, praise the annoying Yoshi Island DS.
I haven´t see none do that in this especific thread, but I usually see YIDS receiving more praise than New Super Mario ,when it should be the opposite.

And thanks guys for actually reading it and observing it. I get thanked every week but nobody ever really offers different or challenging views of the data, so I never know if people are really reading it. Thanks.

You guys are making this a lot more work than I wanted to spend on it this week! Boring week, exactly as predicted for console sales. I want to see some spikes and valleys. I need some action to really get motivated to write about it.

This thing was over 3 months ago. Now its a matter of predicting who will get what games, how long until what console hits what mark, and when and which consoles will be discontinued first. I'm only actually posting this shit for consistency's sake so when Christmas rolls around I have a nice history of charted data to look off of. But good god this season is boring.

So at an average of 60k per week from now until Jan 1, 2008, the Wii will sell another 1.4 million units. That would put it at 4.2 million in Japan.

I think, if we include the end year spike in sales, the Wii could sell more than the LTD of the GC!

Woohoo!

Can we get the stat for 50K (which is more standard than 44K) ?
7 weeks of 10K- is really bad. I wonder if it can continue up to 10 weeks ?

Well, when you have a clear winner, it is boring. Same thing happen during PS2 Era, GBA Era.

The only drama is DS vs PSP on 2006 and PS3 vs Wii at Q1 2007.

"Vinnk's Village" Anecdotal Report

It’s been a while since I posted the background information about Vinnk’s Village, so for all those who are new to the sales age threads, he is a bit about where I live and the stores I gather numbers from.

My town is in Oita Prefecture (in the Kyushu Region) the population is 80,000 (or 60,000 before it merged with 4 surrounding small villages), which is quite small by Japanese standards.

I will track sales from all the stores that sell video games. They are:

2 department stores that sell games (Jusco and Youme Town)
1 discount store with a very small game section. (Mr.Max)
1 manga/anime/game store (Book-net)
1 porn store that tries to look legitimate buy having a small game/DVD section in the front and a massive porn section behind a curtain. (Goody)
1 electronics chain store with a game section (Best Denki)
2 dedicated game stores (Wanpaku and Famicom Dojo)
Yamada Denki, a new electronics store with a fairly extensive game section.

Most anecdotal reports come from big cities like Tokyo and Osaka and in those places people will line up for new games and things sell out all the time. It doesn’t always paint a very accurate picture of Japan outside of metropolitan areas. My numbers are not supposed to represent Japan, but are just my observations based on the town I happen to live in.

This week I was asked to look for: Wii, DS lite, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Folks Soul and Itadaki Street.. I went Thursday June 28h, 2007:

Jusco
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 2 (old colors)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: 2
Itadaki Street: 3

Youme Town
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 4 (old colors)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: 2
Itadaki Street: 1

Mr. Max
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: Sold out
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: Sold out or didn’t order
Itadaki Street: 2

Book-Net
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 6 (2 of new colors, 4 of old)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: 3
Itadaki Street: 2

Goody
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 1 (white) 3 (used)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: Didn’t ever have it
Itadaki Street: None

Best Denki
Wii: 1
DS lite: 8 (old colors) Unknown number of Used
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: 4
Itadaki Street: 3

Wanpaku
Wii: 1
DS lite: Sold out (but 4 used)
Zelda: PH: 2 (but sold out now)
Folks Soul: Sold out
Itadaki Street: 2

Famicom Dojo
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: Sold out (3 used)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: Never ordered it
Itadaki Street: sold out

Yamada Denki
Wii: 1
DS lite: 4 (old colors)
Zelda: PH: Sold out
Folks Soul: 2 (possibly more in back)
Itadaki Street: 4

TOTALS:
Wii: 3
DS lite: 2 (new colors), 23 (old colors), Many used systems
Zelda: PH: 2 (but sold out now)
Folks Soul: 13
Itadaki Street: 17

NOTES:

1. Wii is still very supply constrained. Any store that does have them doesn’t have them for long. I think I can copy and paste this statement until after Christmas.

2. The new colors of the DS lite are almost completely sold out. But DS lites in general can be found at most stores. If you include used DS lites, they can be found at even more. It seems people are trading in their old DS lites when they buy the new colors. In my opinion demand for the system hasn’t increased sharply. People are buying up the new colors but they are likely people who were planning to buy a DS anyway (new colors or not) and those trading for a new color.

3. Folks Soul is odd. It was very available when I was shopping this weekend but right now Wanpaku (the largest dedicated game store) is sold out. All other stores still have copies. Perhaps it was the trailers they were showing in store (no other stores had made a display for this game). It almost made me want to buy it.

4. Zelda also performed kind of oddly in my town. Usually a game goes one of three ways: It’s a smash and sells out in 1 or 2 days, it’s a flop and it hits the bargain bin in a month or it sells what the retailers expected and always keeps s a moderate amount on the shelves. Zelda fits into a brand new 4th category. The game sold out, but it took a while to do so. When I went shopping on Tuesday, there were still copies on the shelves, which I wasn’t expecting. By the time I went to do my report however (Thursday around 5:00-7:30) it was sold out at every store except the biggest game store (Wanpaku). And while I was browsing the Wonderswan games, the 2 they had were bought. So as of right now my entire town is sold out of the game, but it took 5 days to do it. This is my first time to see this “slow burn” effect. I would really like to hear about what happened in the larger cities. The only theory I can offer is that Nintendo just really shipped a lot of copies and that it appealed to more than just the hardcore, who NEED to buy it on the first day. Nintendo was also running ads for it at about the same pace they did before its launch. Or course all this is just theory until we can compare this with the shipped number and next week’s sales.

5. Itadaki Street seems to be selling well, but Zelda overshadowed its launch. None of the stores have demo units or displays up for the game.

6. I saw my first used copy of Trusty Bell this week. No used bundles yet which is a bit surprising since I saw those just days after Blue Dragon went on sale. Maybe people are deciding to keep their 360s this time. Or maybe they are waiting for a Wii to be in stock to trade it in…

davepoobond said:
this is pretty much what i'm thinking. i dont want him to be arrested or booted out of a store by security guards or something like that. :lol

Actually it’s totally fine. I don’t bug anyone with what I do and never pester the workers. At most stores they don’t even notice I am there. The department stores don’t have designated video game people, the porn store leaves their games unattended and unguarded (if I wanted to I could probably steal anything I wanted to). The only places that have even noticed my pattern are Famicom Dojo and Wanpaku.

Hiro who works at Famicom dojo (the family business) is a good friend of mine and he has numbers for me before I even open the door. If I don’t have time to go down there and physically count stuff, he gives the numbers to me over the phone. But I almost always go there anyway because I like the store and discussing gaming with Hiro and his “regulars” who are a very interesting bunch.

The staff of Wanpaku knows me and they also know from my point card that I am a very good customer. My counting doesn't bother them. Or perhaps it does a bit, but not nearly as much as all the “DS kids” who are at the store almost every day, sitting on the floor by the DS download station. They stay for hours and never buy anything. I count for 3 minutes and often pick up something.

So fear not, I am in very little danger of being arrested for shopping. And if I ever were kicked out of a store, it would make a great post.

Nice report on the availability of the new color vs old color.

For Zelda, another probability is because it was first sold on Saturday, instead of Thursday or Friday. Probably quite a few people bought games on Friday night, so that they can stay home and play games on Saturday and Sunday. Probably only hardcore buy games on Saturday.

Poor Itadaki Street. It should have launched one or two weeks before Zelda.

When I was a kid (25 years ago), I used to go to bookstore to read book for 5-8 hours a day, since I could not afford to buy every book I like. Nowadays, I usually bought book and read it at home. Vinnk, when you have children in the future, maybe he/she will be one of those "DS kids". :D

It is also possible that those hardcore gamers haven't finished Trusty Bell because of Zelda : PH release (I know it is a very slight possibility)

Typical numbers all around, nice sales for Zelda, shocking still that the PSP dominates Sony hardware, but I like the games on that platform.

Not in the slightest. All it has to do is keep outselling it more than 3:1. Something it's bound to do.

LTD, it's approaching 3 to 1 and will exceed that by next week. In the past 11 weeks alone, Wii has outsold PS3 by nearly 7 to 1.
