Media Create Sales: Week 1, 2012 (Jan 02 - Jan 08)

Yeah, in the end Takao was right about Just Dance :lol

But no one is talking about Go Vacation doing 210k. VERY great result, especially considering the actual state of Wii's software environment right now.

DCharlie is in a corner...

And you should be in a cave mr "Zelda will sell more than 1 million in Japan and 10 million worldwide". Or do you prefer if I just call you mr "MK7 will have a 800k first week in Japan"?

The hell with some of you, really...

Anyway, nice sales all around that will help some games to clear their shipments/expectations (MH Tri G, FF XIII-2 and Inazuma Go) despite some people here calling bombs everywhere. How much did the first Inzauma sell?

And I want to see how Revelations will perform with this 3DS software "domination". I don't know if this situation is beneficial or not.

Between Go Vacation, Family Fishing and Taiko DE, Namco Bandai's really hit paydirt on Wii this year. Nice to see at least one 3rd party taking advantage of that huge, wide open userbase.

Vita did a bit better than i expected (i thought 30k-35k).

I think that Capcom had lowered expectations because it was a new console with lower userbase. That reason is gone now. Is there any reasons left why TriG shouldnt be able to sell 2m+?

Return of Pac-Man
Not this week :)

It's also the one which obtained to have

1)A porting of two OP games doing 200k and more
2)A SRT about 400k on PSP
3)The true comeback of Tales of franchise
4)A RR doing 110k on a freaking Nintendo console
5)Idolmaster on PS3
6)Gundam Extreme Vs. at 430k
7)So many Gundam doing well

I'd say that it's Namco being...Namco the absolute destroyer. Last year they did awesome results on basically ALL the platforms (...except Vita )
...But they'll have a rough start with Ace Combat and ToI R. XD

That Pacman graph is nuts :o
Who'd thought that the 3DS could turn around like that in just half a year? No me anyway.

Vita tracking up. Rise to heaven confirmed.

Is Tales of Innocence R really the tent pole title this month? I sure hope not!

You forgot Gigant Battle 2 selling near 300k on the 2DS still. NBGI really has done well this year.

I'm hopeful for Tekken 3DS. Another 100k+ seller would be good.

...It's also the best title so far for Vita in the first two months of the year. I'm not even joking.

Oh, so it was. It took Ninokuni so long to sell over 500k I kinda got confused.

I think the real question is how long it will take Level 5 to have another hit that's close to Layton 1-3 and Inazuma 2-3 again. Do you think they'll manage by 2013?

Nobody thought Layton and Inazuma would ever get as big as they eventually got, so it's kinda hard to predict what the next big thing could be. If I had to guess I would say nothing from their currently announced line-up will sell even half as well as Layton and Inazuma did in their prime. Youkai Watch is probably the one game that Level 5 wants to be really big, but we don't know enough about that aside from the fact that Level 5 is now just going through the motions with their cross-media stuff and I find that to be pretty unexciting.

How did the 250$ 3DS weekly in japan?

There is a post with the weekly comparison (3DS-PSP-Vita) in this thread. 3DS did better than Vita even with a late February release and the following tsunami and reactor catastrophe.

I´m really looking forward to ToI Vita sales since the the DS version wasn´t played by a big part of the Tales of fanbase back then.

Interesting, Vita sales flat, 3DS sales going up if Nintendo keeps up the software support they're in for a good year in Japan at least.

Pretty busy this week, but I'll try to hit up a few stores for a "report". Is there anything specific you want me to check on?

Yeah, I mostly agree. I think that Level 5 is basically operating on two levels right now. They're using the big money they make from Layton and Inazuma (even at drastically reduced sales, the games are cheap to make and so formulaic that they are very profitable) to fund two types of games.

On one hand they have stuff like Ninokuni, Time Travelers, Guild01, Fantasy Life, etc which are more unpredictable stand alone prospects which could become IPs if they find success. On the other hand they're also sticking to their tried and true business model with young kids to try and create another Layton or Inazuma with stuff like Little Battlers, Yokai Watch, and even Gundam AGE.

I guess their plan moving forward is that they will either strike gold with another cross-media project, or they will strike gold with one of their more unique experimental releases. If they don't succeed on either front though, in 5-10 years the company might be in trouble as a big publisher.

Oh man, the 3DS is UNSTOPPABLE. Vita is seriously getting hammered by the 3DS HARD :(

I'm curious, did people expect a different result? I mean, honestly. I got a vibe that people actually thought the Vita was going to go toe to toe with the 3DS and I never saw a good reason to buy into that. I expect it to have a similar track to the PSP just as the 3DS should track similarly to the DS in terms of dominance.

It would have gone toe to toe, and probably even beaten the 3DS if Nintendo hadn't done 2 things:

1. Cut the Price

2. Secured a Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter 4 game for the system along with the launch of very good Mario software.

They did when the Vita was announced at the same price as 3DS, and again even during the price drop (because it "reeked of desperation," fire sale, doomed to lose all third party support etc.).

I did! Just at the end of last week's thread. :)

With Go Vacation and Family Fishing success, I wonder why third party abandoned Wii so early in Japan. There IS a market for certain type of games.

On the other hand, it could very well be because there are no other alternatives so these two games would perform this well.

Somebody in another topic called the price cut a genius move, I was like WTF! they overpriced the fuck out of the system based on E3 hype and then when nobody bit they became desperate and cut the price.

While I don't disagree the price cut helped enormously I think that it's worth noting it would have been a major surprise if the 3DS DIDN'T get Monster Hunter. In the first place it would have a year head start on achieving a userbase and can get that userbase BEFORE Monster Hunter. In the second place it's predecessor was the dominant system in Japan. PSP's revival was in large part because of Monster Hunter, but the point is Capcom was probably going to bet on the system with the built in userbase, not the system that might gain users as a result of their game releasing.

On the price cut specifically while it obviously helped to steady the system's sales and breathed life into the system ahead of the big releases even if the system WAS $250 still I don't think it would have less than, say, 3.5 million total sales at this point without it considering the software releases Nintendo has out. Nintendo has proven it can sell hardware with it's software, something I don't think Sony has shown on a consistent basis with their portables outside of Monster Hunter, at least not to the extent that Nintendo can.

I mean, narratively sure, both things helped but let's not overstate things, I don't think the 3DS would be selling anywhere near 43k right now even if it was still it's original price.

Looking forward to the report! I hope this becomes weekly again. This was always my favorite part of the MC threads.

3DS v.s Vita v.s PSP
PS3 as a whole
The main games for the week: SRT Masou Kishin 2, Shinren Camera, Ace Bomba
The situation about MH, the 3DS and its audience, as you said in your last report.
Expectations for future titles.

Lots of Nintendo games got a bump here. SM3DL +74% is quite impressive. And Nintendogs+cats popped up into 13th place. And Mario Kart Wii, nearly four years old now, is slightly ahead in 12th place!

Just from a "narrative" POV, not an actual reality POV, I think it's worth noting that the 3DS had an excellent, very well received E3 2010 reveal, followed by some silence and then a steady stream of terrible news leading up to a shitty launch period. The Vita had an excellent, very well received E3 2011 reveal, followed by some silence and then a steady stream of iffy news leading up to an iffy launch period--simultaneously, the 3DS has experienced a revival due to <insert attribution here, price cut, actual games, eShop, everyone was just waiting for Christmas anyway duh, whatever>.

So I think what happened is that the Vita's good news twilight zone announcement period coincided with the 3DS' coming down to earth poor launch period, while the Vita's coming down to earth launch period has coincided with the 3DS' renaissance.

Without making any kind of long-term prediction, I think the narrative has probably been a little exaggerated on both sides because of the coincidental timing there.

Somebody in another topic called the price cut a genius move, I was like WTF! they overpriced the fuck out of the system based on E3 hype and then when nobody bit they became desperate and cut the price.

It was still genius that they gave themselves enough leeway to have the capability of doing that.

I mean it almost looks like an intentional dick move to screw Sony.

Nintendo: Our system's $250.

Sony: Ah HAH! We just have to do our best to meet that, cut a few corners, maybe take a slight loss, and we can meet them on the same ground and show people that our system is so much more valuable for the same price!

Nintendo: Well it wasn't selling as well as we hoped, but fortunately we have room to cut it a bit without hurting ourselves too much. Now it's $170, just before Christmas! Wait, Sony, when are you launching again?

Sony: ... :(

Pretty busy this week, but I'll try to hit up a few stores for a "report". Is there anything specific you want me to check on?
You bet. Obligatory 3DS hardware + MH3G report plus also a word or two about RE:R, Gravity Daze and ToI:R pre-orders.

That would make my day. Thanks a ton for your time.

I'm actually surprised Level 5 planned another cross-media project considering they already have Inazuma Eleven, Little Battlers, and Gundam AGE that targets similar audience. But hey I'm no expert on this. I don't think Yokai Watch will be that big unless they had crazy plans for that.

Anyway I like Inazuma Eleven so yeah good on the sales.
