They did when the Vita was announced at the same price as 3DS, and again even during the price drop (because it "reeked of desperation," fire sale, doomed to lose all third party support etc.).

Mostly by people that ignored 3DSs lineup, even without Monster Hunter there still would have been Mario Kart and 3Dland and after that MGS3, Kingdom Hearts and Resident Evil to push 3DS systems. That MH got announced for 3DS sure helped to sell systems but the more important aspect was, that people saw Vitas ("japanese centric") lineup for what it really is.

Not ONE Vita game in the top 20 :lol What are they playing on it? psp games I guess but don't you have to download them
Well, the memory cards did sell well for the Vita, so it makes sense that the hardcore crowd are playting their PSP games on the Vita and not buying Vita games.

Just from a "narrative" POV, not an actual reality POV, I think it's worth noting that the 3DS had an excellent, very well received E3 2010 reveal, followed by some silence and then a steady stream of terrible news leading up to a shitty launch period. The Vita had an excellent, very well received E3 2011 reveal, followed by some silence and then a steady stream of iffy news leading up to an iffy launch period--simultaneously, the 3DS has experienced a revival due to <insert attribution here, price cut, actual games, eShop, everyone was just waiting for Christmas anyway duh, whatever>.

So I think what happened is that the Vita's good news twilight zone announcement period coincided with the 3DS' coming down to earth poor launch period, while the Vita's coming down to earth launch period has coincided with the 3DS' renaissance.

Without making any kind of long-term prediction, I think the narrative has probably been a little exaggerated on both sides because of the coincidental timing there.

Just in terms of the long term I never really saw what the PSV did compared to the PSP to "change" things. I mean, the 3DS was going to get it's sales with Nintendo games and it was going to build it's userbase because Nintendo is traditionally dominant in the handheld sphere, it's proven it can sell games when the heavy hitters come, so we knew at some point the 3DS was going to rebound even with a slow start (whether or not you believed it was going to rebound as well as it has).

What was the justification for the PSV to change things and sell MORE or sell CLOSE to that? That it was a good technological value. And it is, it's hardware that is loaded with cool modern features and a slick design. But that's the thing, it's a PSP++. It's the same type of system with the same type of limiting factor, it doesn't have THE games that a broader audience is going to go out of it's way for at that price. the 3DS had the same issue early on and then the software came out and sales exploded. I mean, sure sales jumped with the price cut but they jumped far more with Mario and Mario Kart and Monster Hunter.

I want to be clear, I never thought the PSV was going to "Fail" and I still don't. It's going to make a profit for Sony, and it's going to get a similar userbase to the PSP, it's just not going to break out of that. It's not a, to use Nintendo's favorite term lately "disruptive" hardware product. It appeals to people that like higher end gaming with software experiences similar to a console. It's just not a more mainstream product and I don't think it needs to be. I just think people didn't calibrate their expectations because we're still ultimately way back in a Sega vs Nintendo mindset where everything is directly competing against everything else. In reality Nintendo and Sony in terms of handhelds have been targeting different markets with their systems and they SHOULD be. Sony can make a lot of money and carve out a nice niche by going higher end, but as long as they are you shouldn't expect them to challenge Nintendo's sales dominance.

So how does the Vita's next 6 months of games compare to the 3DS's next 6 months?

Not very well. 3DS has Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, Fire Emblem and several such franchises, whereas Vita's next few months resemble the barren spell that the 3DS had after launch.

Also Love Plus.

Let's not pretend it's a super million seller but it's there.

When the DS came out, touch screen gaming was still a pretty new and exciting thing. By now, Sony's saying look, we matched them feature for feature...but stuff like touch screens are basically assumed at this point. It's not about having the same features as your competitor (though that helps), it's about offering something new.

And also software.

to be fair resi seems like the only potential million seller of that bunch. even though i don't think it will do that well. whens the next big 3DS title coming out?

I'd buy a 3DS myself, but I don't want to have to import all the games when I return from Japan just because it has that stupid region lock.

It's 2007 all over again baby
Incredible, every game on Wii/3DS got a boost and MonHun stay at same at almost 100k, it's a lock it'll vastly surpass Capcom's wildest expectations

Every game doesn't have to be a million seller. 3DS has a steady stream of potential 200-500k games coming out in the following months which is a sign of a healthy platform.

It would be a miracle for Resident Evil to sell a million. The game that has the best shot out of those listed is Kingdom Hearts, though that will probably fall a bit short.

I don't think they'll be million-sellers, but they'll propel 3DS nicely through the quiet 1st quarter.

As for mega-sellers, Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Collection 2 are coming, as well as the inevitable Pokemon game. I daresay there may be more announcements at E3, too.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Resident Evil is Big and it is comin out in 2 weeks. You don't need
to release mio sellers everyday to keep hardware SEs high, a consistent flow of +100-300k sellers will do the job.

wut?

KH >>> RE, and I doubt KH will be a million seller in Japan.

The next big 3DS title (sales wise) would be Animal Crossing or Tomodachi Collection 2 but I don't know when they are coming out, sorry.

i wasn't sure about that one, only thing i could remember was Resi 5 doing incredibly well. whats the prediction for RE, 400-500k?

ah yes, AC could do some crazy numbers, i forgot about that one.

Revelations won't be a million seller in Japan.

The only real potential million seller we know of for the first half is probably the DQM remake. Animal Crossing too if it hasn't been pushed back farther.

Can't wait until Pokemon.

Isn't this sort of a unique situation here? It's a bit late for their traditional third entry (Pokemon Gray). Two new games for 3DS with a new story and setting...?

It's definitely about software. I mentioned that the Vita is not a "disruptive" product and it isn't. I think the PSP when it came out WAS disruptive. It was sleek, it was high end, it had an amazing screen that could do things the DS couldn't do at all. The real problem for the system was that the DS was even MORE disruptive. The DS offered consumers a gaming experience that FELT completely different, that was novel, that made people stop and take notice in a way that Sony, with it's far more beautiful graphics and far slicker design couldn't do. The Vita offers some features that the PSP didn't and it offers a MUCH better value proposition from a technological standpoint than mainstream audiences will credit for it - but it won't shake the perception that it's price is too expensive for a gaming system.

But yes, ultimately things are decided with software as well and I don't think Sony has proven to have consistent software sellers on handhelds (outside of Monster Hunter of course which is gone).

Pretty nice results for most everyone this week. 3DS domination continues although it needs to continue because Wii hardware and software are only a few weeks from falling off a cliff again. 3DS has to carry Nintendo almost by itself for perhaps a large portion of this year so it's good that it's showing Superman like strength.

Are we doing official predictions for next week? I'm wondering at this point where ToI R and Ace Combat 3DS are going to hit. I could easily see Ace Combat coming in below the Mario games and maybe MonHun as well. ToI is likely to have a rough start although that's pretty much a given at this point.

Now that you mention it, it would be pretty dymb to release both in the same year.

They better NAWT delay Animal Crossing any further.

This is true, and something that I haven't really seen mentioned that much. The PSP was the first device I remember encountering that could do "high quality 3D." My first experience with Ridge Racer, having that kind of game in the palm of my hand, was absolutely something new. In 2005, this was an experience I'd never had before. In 2012, I've played a ton of 3D games on portable devices with impressive screens. The PSP absolutely had a disruptive advantage that the it seems like Vita's not going to have in its corner.

Grey would ordinarily be coming out this September. It's debatable whether the transition between consoles will change it.

I'd bet on a 3DS exclusive Grey using a lot of B/W assets and some very basic 3D, as a halfway house between that and a ground-up 3DS RPG.

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
Does Tamagotchi Connection actually have a chance of being a million seller? I know the first one reached a million, but the second one was half that, and the third barely broke 100k. Were they vastly different games?

Tomodachi Collection (Nintendo) =/= Tamagotchi Connection (Bandai)

I think that's what differentiates it from past systems that competed against Nintendo's handhelds. It was able to gain a toe hold because it was disruptive and expanded and changed the handheld market but I haven't seen anything in the Vita that makes me believe it's going to build on what the PSP did. I see it holding serve just as I see the 3DS basically holding serve because I don't think Nintendo needed for it to be disruptive.

Man, Nintendo has pulled out the Miami Heat in video game form. Those three games just don't seem to be falling off the charts anytime soon.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
About If I Were in a Sealed Room With a Girl, I'd Probably buy her a Vita, the real date now it's 25th March, you can see it on Amazon.

About KH, I have a suspect.

Nintendo should seriously consider the slogan: It's not about the hardware, it's about the games.

I have this strange urge to buy some of these outlying no-way-it-sells-more-than-25k-copies Vita games.
@field in particular.
After looking it up, having asked about it in the Japanese box art thread, it seems to be a mini-golf/pinball game played in that psuedo-Space-Channel-5-minimalist-technicolor-retrofuture-space...and that appeals to my more eccentric side.

Man, Vita's in for a hard road to compete...

I'm getting one at launch in North America, but all of the games I actually care about for the system (Tales of Innocence R, Ys IV, etc) are not system sellers for most. Nintendo has at least three on the 3DS.

The sad thing is I see nothing on the horizon for Vita that can even compete with Nintendo's 2012 lineup. Add the fact Nintendo probably has the main Monster Hunter entries for their platforms as they do Dragon Quest, and what was the biggest appeal of Sony's lineup may be more appealing for Nintendo's.

PSV narrative, however, cannot afford a 35% price drop, I suspect; or pull multi-million sellers out of its hat
