17th March.
Ah, alright, it is normal to see it gather interest then. Your anecdotal evidence suggests nothing but a strong demand from early buyers/fans of both franchises but it is still good to hear. We may see the title sell healthily and pave the way for Layton x Ace Attorney.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

...It's a DS title, why it should pave the way for a 3DS one?

For Code of Princess, I'll say something impossible: 33 copies!

...I'm sorry Orgen, but there are changes today that NEED an Amazon Watch :p

First of all: the first position. Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition is first! :lol
...And the fact preorders already started, with even the boxart, makes me think that, maybe, the Coro Coro surprise could be something else, after all!
Then, Kid Icarus Uprising. Preorders started, already 12th.
Code of Princess is 58th, what the hell.
And Shinrei Camera is at 600 yen more than its retail price. Sold out on Amazon, at least.

SRT OG Saga: Masou Kishin II, in the bundle edition, is sold out as well.

Less people will love you... have you seen Takao? Even putting the SRT game I don't think you can win him back :(

So we still don't know what's the Coro Coro announcement for the 14th?

I made a stacked bar graph with these numbers. (Note: blue = third party, red = first party)

So I can see why third parties might not like developing for Nintendo systems. Nintendo is a goddamn beast.

The DS bar actually highlights what a truly successful platform should be when you consider the 3rd party to first party ratio at that point in its lifespan. The PSP and PS3 bars are evidence that Sony had to continue to pump a lot of first party stuff just to keep their platforms going.

No, and I repeat.
The fact that preorders started before the coming of Coro Coro, with all the infos, and the trailer, make me think that maybe the "shocking Pokémon announcement" is not Pokemon + Nobunaga, after all.

IIRC, this never happened in other similar cases. Could we have the Coro Coro announcement this night, due to a leak like it always happen with Famitsu?

Coro Coro has started leaking, and it seems that the story is Nobunaga's Ambition, after all.

There is apparently some news about DLC for Pokedex 3D, but nothing in the retail space.

The top 20 sales chart is what makes Vita so sickly looking. Good gravy.

Isn't it rather usual that launch software drops off a cliff in the weeks after the launch? If I remember correctly, the 3DS launch titles were practically gone as well, after two or three weeks.

I want to be clear, I never thought the PSV was going to "Fail" and I still don't. It's going to make a profit for Sony, and it's going to get a similar userbase to the PSP, it's just not going to break out of that.

Would Sony consider that a success, though?

I mean, nobody invests X in something to make X + 1. If Sony can't grow the userbase and deliver this thing to more people, is that still successful?

Not sure. Maybe, since it's not like Sony's other handheld devices are doing jack. But Sony was practically made on handheld devices and I can't help but think they want more than being the also-ran in the portable game device segment.

Think about the entire ecosystem (lol, I am starting to use that non-sense expression too).

Nintendo did experience drops in hardware three times in a row with their home consoles and once with their handheld systems but they still were able to generate growth. PSP's software sales were never too hot and they can definitely get an increase with the Vita. Of course, Vita has to have a sizeable userbase first. But it is already not to exensive to produce thanks to the mainstream components.

Ah. Well then. Pokemon Grey's announcement DELAYED. :p

Replying to a few comments in here:

Capcom actually predicted 1.2 million shipped to retailers by the end of March. They've obviously already passed that with more than 1 million sold through to consumers.

Have the new Famitsu Top 30 in. 2011 Top 100 inclusion soon.

FF XIII-2 (5367) is behaving much like a few ~900K games. A little more frontloaded.

Mario Kart 7's fifth week almost perfectly matches Mario Kart Wii's, so it's no closer or farther from top of the MK pile.

Layton hung in the Top 30 until June, Nintendogs has stayed in most of the time since launch. BUT a point that's often made against Vita is the opposite here--since the rest of the year is quieter than December/January, there was less pushing them out.

Sony is going to swear up and down to consumers that they're in it to win it. They'll play that they're in competition for themselves, but everyone will "know" they're competing with Nintendo. They're really not. They're in it to make as much money for as long as possible and nothing more. Sony has made a judgement that even though the PSP is doing well right now it's success will not be as sustained as (or alternately will not be hampered by) a successor system being introduced to the market that will eventually take the PSP's mantle and continue to sell and (whether they are NOW or not) will make them more money than, say, if the Vita was introduced a year from now if they believed that was when PSP ran out of steam.

The numbers don't actually "matter" except to the extent it attracts developers to put their games and potential revenue drivers on their system. Sony wants to sell well because it will encourage games LIKE monster hunter (which certainly came to the PSP because of it's success at a console level on Sony systems) which drives the userbase which drivers software sales. But whether Sony sells 100% of their userbase or 120% or 300% they don't care where they finish in the console wars, they care how much money it allows them to make from consumers. The system wars are tied into that because it can affect the userbase but they're not in it for the competition, they're in it for the money.

But whether Sony sells 100% of their userbase or 120% or 300% they don't care where they finish in the console wars, they care how much money it allows them to make from consumers.

I do think it is extremely plausible that the Vita project as a whole has been designed and shepherded in such a fashion as to be profitable for Sony even with a relatively small worldwide userbase.

Yep. As of the end of 2011, Xillia's first week accounts for about 81% of its sales.

It only makes sense. The Vita is the Ferrari of systems if you will. It's very high end compared to the 3DS and is a technological marvel. But it's not going to sell as much as a Ford Fusion say. The Vita has to be sustainable with a lower install base because you'd expect that, but my guess is since there is more room for the price to drop there is more room for a higher disconnect where the system generates more revenue than the average 3DS (Not now of course, but over time).

Heh. If so, interesting to see how different Sony's take on this is compared to Wii.

This is possible but to think such a modest goal is Sony's overall aim is much too apologetic of the Vita's mediocre sales (not that I think that's what you're saying).

To think Sony wants anything less than handheld gaming dominance is a bit naive. But if they can end up turning an overall profit on the thing (something I'm not entirely sure of at this point but isn't unlikely either) by the end of its lifetime, it'd at least avoid being labeled a complete failure by the higher ups.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Which is probably true, for the first couple of years - their strategy is to "out live" the 3DS, like PSP did with the DS in Japan and Ps3 with Wii.

Sony wants to make money. Would they "like" to sell 30 million Vitas in Japan? Sure, because they'd be making a fuckton of money. Does Sony believe that is possible? I highly doubt it. They went high end because Nintendo went main stream, thereby sacrificing overall sales to make a better profit with a smaller userbase.

I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that high-end cars have a much higher markup for the name, so they get more profit/unit. In the case of the Vita, it is selling at/under the cost to manufacture a unit, so wouldn't they also need volume to compete in profits? Looking at the system, I'd imagine it is going to take a good amount of time before the costs are low enough for them to sell in low volume and still recoup their development costs. It seemed to me that when they announced that the price of the Vita would be the same as the 3DS, that they were trying to get a high volume portable (and that they didn't expect the 3DS to get such a drastic price cut so quickly,) and that by the time the price cut happened it was too late for them to go back and reprice the system for a higher/existent profit margin. Probably also why they pumped out so many more 3g units.

Well, like I said, I think with the Vita it's going to have longer periods at a higher price where the costs have already decreased, thus more opportunities to generate higher revenue in between price drops.

I highly doubt that. This isn't like their other electronics lines. They don't have a wide range of products that cater to both the budget consumer and the high end gadget lover. It would make no sense to create a software driven product intended for a niche market because software creation is greatly influenced by the size of the number of users. Why would they create a product with the intention of making such thin profits and then give it such a major marketing and development push? It makes zero business sense.

Is Sony's #1 goal to make money on the Vita? Yes. Sure. But to say that they designed the thing primarily to make marginal profits is nonsensical. If Sony's goal to the Vita was to play second fiddle to the 3DS, receive lagging software support, and net a few couple bucks along the way, then all the resources put into Vita should have been used elsewhere. Vita is an investment. If what you're saying is true, then that makes Sony more incompetent than even I had initially imagined.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I think they hoped PSP would give them a better foothold in the market allowing them to take hold of more of it by this gen, like Xbox did for Microsoft in the console space. I doubt they'll be happy if the next iteration only performs about as good. But hey, I'm sure that facing damnation they'll be happy if it at least ends up being profitable to any extent.

Would Microsoft be happy if the 360 only did as good as the Xbox, even if they had taken hold of some niche to call their own?

Also "sacrificing overall sales to make a better profit with a smaller userbase"? How is smaller better? It's not like with Vita being so expensive they gain more money per sale, and it's not like they'll make more money on software, especially if proportionally more of it has to be "core" software rather than also have plentiful relatively cheaply produced titles that can do well in the mainstream audience... Especially with the specs and aim of the system to provide an overall better visual level than the 3DS...

Not guessing how things will go mind you, just saying.

I'm not necessarily saying they're trying to make marginal profits, I think that longer term the Vita, as the PSP did will become what the PSP is now. Sony was never, ever going to compete with Nintendo as a handheld company by having a similar system to what they had. We all know there is a long trail of failed portable systems that wasn't able to really make a practical dent in Nintendo's dominance in the handheld space.

Sony initially made their inroads with a high end system knowing it wasn't going to generate tremendous revenue early on but would eventually do so. In a sense it's another variant of their PS3 strategy, over the long haul they're going to make good money. But the basic reason they did it is not because they want to make marginal profits, it's that the only way to make sufficient inroads to eventually make larger profits is essentially to bypass the market Nintendo has cornered in the immediate term and compete for later in the life cycle.

The PS series was dominating the home console userbase and PSP was designed to take over what was Nintendo's stronghold at that period, which was the handheld market. Pretty sure most people laughed about the 'ridiculous' dual screen approach and assumed PSP will take over the handheld market just like they did home consoles. I think it's ridiculous to backpedal on that now that they've failed and conclude "oh well, they weren't really trying."

Ditto for Vita. That $249/24980yen price was a direct answer to 3DS's original price and, with 3ds's own list of failings, a lot of us probably thought "hey, the 3DS is fucked." Much of that opinion just changed w/ the price drop and now apparent strong lineup. I'm pretty damn sure Sony was going for the jugulars this time around as well.

I see what you're saying, but it still feels like a really foolish strategy. The PS3 has only relatively recently received moderate success, and it's clear that Sony was banking on greater sales earlier in its lifecycle. There's also the fact that the primary reason the PS3 is able to see the little bit of success it has is due to the 360 and rising development costs. The majority of the software support for the PS3 is from multi-plat releases spread from developers using two separate consoles as one platform for development. The Vita doesn't have such a companion platform. If the 360 never existed, who's to say that the PS3 wouldn't have really blown up as the premiere console of choice for developers. But hypothetically speaking, if its hardware and software trends had remained unchanged in such a scenario, I really doubt it would have received nearly as much support as it has. At the end of the day, it's software that drives the sale of hardware, and it's software that's the primary source of revenue for console manufacturers. Creating a niche console drives away software development and would lead to decreased profits, regardless of how much money they're making on the hardware itself.

The idea that Sony is intentionally attempting a water-treading low-volume marginal profitability model with the Vita goes so completely against its corporate culture and its actual strategies to this point that I find it difficult to even entertain that notion in the slightest.
