When Nintendo's corporate campaign has pretty much an entire sub-section of GAF donning their avatars in a green cap, its pretty unsurprising to see them popping fireworks over its sales success.
It's indeed quite surprising witnessing saleagers celebrating over sales success.

I'm sure some will make the shortages excuse, but it's pretty apparent that the Vita price cut is a failure, though it did result in a longer respite than I had initially expected. Ironically, it'll probably go down in gaming history as having shortened the platform's lifespan, as it'll make it harder for Hirai and Yoshida to justify keeping it around.

lol ok i guess you think if you keep repeating something it might turn out true. I guess May 2014 will put an end to this nonsense. as far as i can see Sony has shown no signs of panic or made any drastic moves. they did a price cut a year and half in which is normal and have noticed that software moves units and no surprise it is going back down as they have no games coming out for a month and then it will go back up again and by then maybe more software for the fall will be announced as it is closer to e3 as well that can sustain momentum. they have publicly announced at the ps4 event that vita will be the ultimate companion for the ps4 and more details will come through out the year. i don't see them turning around and discontinuing vita 6 months into the ps4 timeline but we shall see.

All that salt on pie and beans is not healthy but it does explain why you're so bitter.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Luigi's sales in context are pretty incredible disregarding the stupid fanboy whining

Hey I had my Vita Christmas, who am I to begrudge Luigi Hanukkah! Looks like a great game, glad its selling well. Rather it than some slop like NSMB.

Wow someone is pressed!

It's surprising because it's selling a lot better than it's predecessor, and I'm sure it's not only Nintendo fanboys that are buying it ;)

Oh yeah forgot about that....Now I wonder how a paper luigi game based on his adventure during TTYD would sell.

Yep, as predicted, the PSV is heading back down to below 10k and the Wii U is already down below 10k.

Sony is screwed. Japan doesn't like consoles anymore, and their handheld is failing. Nintendo has the 3DS to keep them afloat, at least.

Yes, im sure if they planned on discontinuing it they would shout it from the rooftops. Selling vita as an overpriced vita ps4 accessory is still the worst idea ive heard

Do you consider the PS3 a success in Japan, barring any comparisons to previous gens?

It had lots of success on the software side of things, despite the fact there are few million sellers.

I think once PS4 launches we'll see for certain just what kind of country Japan is. I have a strong feeling they are definitely a more mobile/portable country than say America and I think we'll see some amazingly disappointing numbers for PS4 in Japan compared to the States and Europe.

I wouldn't call it a failure, price cut pushed games and hardware. It ain't no revival for damn sure, but it never looked like one to begin with.

The intent of any hardware price cut is to produce a long-lasting, significant increase in demand. If the 3DS cut had only resulted in 2-6 weeks of improved sales before cratering back to former levels, it'd have been a failure, too.

Are you implying that all Mario universe games are bound to sell shedloads just based on the names?

I don't think that's easy like that.

Not neccessarily ''shitloads'' but a Mario universe game selling good on 3DS is hardly surprising.

As for it outselling other spinoffs isn't it more about the other games like Sticker Star or whatever coming out while the main games (3Dland, NSMB2) were still selling more than nowdays?

Maybe they should have done a decent spinoff for Wii U too instead of that Game & Wario garbage.

Those beans sure seem to be bitter.

I hope you never celebrate a game/dev you like doing well.

I think there are multiple indications (LTD sales, YoY totals and YoY weekly sales) that dedicated handhelds aren't a long-term strategy either, even for Nintendo and even in Japan.

I was actually having this discussion with my hairdresser this morning. As a PS4 accessory it would please current Vita owners but it's hardly going to get the casual buyer to fork out for a Vita alongside their launch price PS4.

reasons why 3ds is doing worse than last year?

Animal Crossing and Luigi aren't pushing hardware like the Holy Trinity did up to this point, and 3DS's big Q2 title doesn't come out until next week.

With the end of year line up, the chances of 3DS not outselling the 2012 totals are basically nil.

You're pretty good at this revisionist history thing.

3DS is down YOY in every region too isn't it?

Correction: Japan doesnt like unappealing consoles with one of the worst lineups seen on a console

Mario 3D Land was at 542,842 units at this point in time. LM2 is at 532,275. It's doing amazing.

Yo duuurp. Reading is fundamental.

Anyways, I'm sort of enraptured by the Vita and Wii U trajectories.
Not quite sure what'll happen.
Vita has a few small selections in the upcoming months to add some minor bumps in the road.
Not sure about Wii U though.

Nothing would make my day more then to see japan get off its more recent handheld obsession and I can see it happening too.

I think most likely though is that gaming consoles both traditional and handheld are going to go down in total number of sales across the board, I think the numbers we have gotten the last 2 or so gens are more of an exception than a rule going forward but we will see how the ps4 and new xbox do.

With WiiU and Vita looking like duds, if Sony actually manages to put together a decent lineup they could have a nice spot.

Was 3D land before or after pricecut tho? I don't remember. Wasn't that at the time when 3DS was still struggling?

Post struggle.

They will have the same spot PS3 has thanks to 3rd parties. It won't be a huge hit thanks to home console market but it should be a safe spot nontheless in the long run. Something Vita never had.

I don't really see how leaving it alone was the better option. I can't find it right now, but I believe Road posted a graph showing Vita essentially racking up months worth of pre-price cut sales this last month and a half.

They could conceivably do a good bit better. The ps3 was 600 dollars, had competition from the wii, and competition from the psp.

Ok, but its almost impossible to tell how much came from the software surge

of course they wont shout it from the rooftops but if they planned on discontinuing it they won't be publicly saying stuff like that as well. I don't even get this whole notion anyway as there is no proof of them discontinuing or stopping support for any of their systems yet. i mean they are still supporting the move! so I don't see them discontinuing especially when there is so much push with indie games and good word of mouth for the device itself recently. i just think it will be a slow burn

That's easy to do when the system does 70K in total in December.

So guess that makes Mario Party 3DS (back to the original style, hooray!) the big Fall Nintendo title. No Zelda 3DS this year, then?

Edit:
Super Luigi U during the Summer, so maybe they'll launch New Super Mario Bros. U Complete Edition this Fall for Wii U for people who didn't get the DLC and/or just bought a Wii U, and weren't planning to go back to older titles.

That kind of misses the point; I don't see how letting it languish at pitiful unit numbers and no chance for the software to sell, even if at a better margin, would be better than a great deal more units and better software sales probably than would have otherwise occurred during this period.

Theres no real evidence the software would have sold significantly worse. SS is not the best selling vita game
