Media Create Sales: Week 15, 2013 (Apr 08 - Apr 14)

That kind of misses the point; I don't see how letting it languish at pitiful unit numbers and no chance for the software to sell, even if at a better margin, would be better than a great deal more units and better software sales probably than would have otherwise occurred during this period.
Maybe they weren't willing to do it without enough* software to back it up.
Missing the holiday was indeed a huge fuck up for Sony though.

*for Vita low standard.

Calendar week aligned for the year post launch (i.e. 2013, 2007, 2002)

Weekly.

Cumulative.
Theres no real evidence the software would have sold significantly worse. SS is not the best selling vita game
There's no indication they would have sold the same or better either, as far as I'm aware. This is all just second-guessing. I'm not sure how the latter is necessarily some sort of validation of the former.

Pikmin 3 in a few months pretty much guarantees it's intentionally being held back, probably as part of a renewed push for the system.

Edit:
EARTHBOUND IS COMING (outside of Japan)! Oh, my. :lol

Is this the longest a Vita game has ever been in top 30 (let alone top 15)?
Also noticing it's been selling 30% of Vita HW sales for 4 weeks now - would be interesting to see if that holds when HW is stable for a week.

Unless they have a bunch of other games ready though (which I'm skeptical of) then what's going to drive the push?

I don't see the strategy right now and what it will accomplish. Hold back titles, go another three months selling sub-100K NPD and probably much worse in Europe. Price-drop and release Pikmin, Game & Wario and Wii Fit U then?

Zelda 3DS for holidays it is, then. :) No DQ localizations, though. :(

Get into holiday titles that would be announced at E3. Have to have third-party support to carry that, though. We're still getting through "launch window" releases, and the only title ~dated past that is Wind Waker HD in the Fall. There will be something else besides that from Nintendo this year, but they still need third-parties to fill out the lineup into a more meaningful arrangement.

Yep so far it seems to be best legs among Vita games.
Two weeks from now all hardware will be up from golden week sales so we will see then.

After this Nintendo Direct... I just can't see how the Vita can compete against the 3DS with the just announced games:

Mario & Luigi RPG
Yoshi's Island
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2
Mario Party 3DS
Mario vs Donkey Kong

It will be hard to top that. And we still have E3.

This list shows internally that Nintendo is putting a lot more effort into the 3DS then the Wii U currently, unless E3 shows a drastic turn around.

Do you mean these titles will lead into the Holiday titles being released?

I.e. something like G&W June. Pikmin 3 July. Wii Fit U August. Then Mario Kart U and Zelda Wind Waker HD in like October or November?
Have to have third-party support to carry that, though.
There's the rub. Third party support doesn't seem to be getting any better and I can't see the above being able to turn around the console in a meaningful and sustainable manner in itself, even with a price cut. I'm still ambivalent on how much a title like Mario Kart U or Super Mario U will do for the system.

Well the 3DS certainly still has a strong line-up.

As for the Wii U, we have a Pikmin release date: July 13th in Japan.

Well, the way things have been going it really won't compete. At least not in terms of sales volume. What would have ever made you think otherwise?

Even if this Asimov guy is Laguna he's not saying anything crazy.

Talking about handhelds, only one of the two first parties cares about their system.

There's a strong possibility they'll split the E3 conference between Wii U/3DS like they did last year.

Did the 3DS had any announcement from Nintendo at E3?

They had a separate conference, but all I remember is disappointment.

Interesting that the Vita is well above last years numbers in both ytd and month to month comparison. Maybe there is hope yet.

It couldn't compete before that Nintendo Direct. Nothing has changed.

I'm wondering how this will affect the Wii-U. When are Nintendo going to realise they have two machines to support?

Definitely. It's nice to have him back though.

Remember how pre-launch how quiet Nintendo was about the Wii U? I really wonder if internally in the end they just saw the 3DS as a more important part of their business. I mean, even if Wii U titles are at E3, unless they do this "relaunch" and held tons of titles back, most titles will be what months to a year away? And at a time when the other two are coming to play ball.

Really feels like Nintendo itself doesn't believe in the Wii U and will support it half heartedly (i.e., make the R&D cost back).

Hell Sony doesn't even care about updating its store on time let alone supporting a handheld.

Great. Now I need to go back and watch the Japanese ND, too. :lol

So Mario Party 3DS for the main Fall title in Japan, then. Mario Party DS was a phenomenon in Japan, so that may be the reasoning there.

The main fall title would be Pokemon X/Y. :)

Mario Party and Yoshi's Island would be the holiday titles which kind of makes sense. While 3DS should do ok with these 2 and Pokemon X/Y leftover, it's certainly weaker than previous two holidays if no more title is announced.

No. You just laid out a likely scenario, though, with probably Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U in August to coincide with a price drop. Rayman's in September, so that's something decent/decently big releasing each month from August-holidays.

Super Mario Galaxy didn't sell the Wii in a major way. Mario Kart Wii did, though. Just my opinion on the matter. If given a choice for this Fall, I'd say Mario Kart U would be the preferable title to release, then. On third-parties (in the U.S.), ACIV will be there this Fall (and not miss the release date, this time), and Call of Duty should be on the system, too. Those won't make up for all the games not coming to Wii U, but they're still better than nothing.

I'm not expecting a miraculous turnaround to Wii levels here. If it can even get back on the 360 2006 track in the U.S., it'll be an accomplishment. :lol

Do they have any fixed time? Except for the certain day.

They also talked like 10-15 minutes on the main E3 conference about 3DS. I dont think anything new was announced at that time.

Far Cry 3 still in the top 30 after a month, pretty proud of that!

Does not compute. Pokebomb is going to be massive.

Just stating the obvious at this point. vita couldnt compete before it even came out.

Well, sure. After THE MH BETRAYAL!!1 it was obvious that Vita wasn't going to compete but it doesn't mean that a first party shouldn't do the job of supporting their own system.

Nah, it's just that any time a Nintendo Direct happens I get remembered about how worthless SCEJ and the WiiU are.

Based on the live blogs from the event cause I forgot everything, the 3DS event showed gameplay demos of the 3DS stuff at the keynote, where they only had trailers. Announcement wise there was NSMB2, Paper Mario, LM, and Mirror of fate.

NSMB2 = Nintendo Direct or Fiscal Report earlier in the year
Paper Mario = E3 2010
Lugi's Mansion = E3 2011
Mirror of Fate = Pre-E3

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
So, dated for July, just how low will the WiiU go in the meantime? Theres 3 whole months of seemingly absolutely nothing ahead.

Just saying but stuff being shown now was probably greenlighted before price cut went into effect so Nintendo probably played it safe and planned future released based on not so optimistic scenario.

So if they do shift now the effects won't be visible until 2014.

Vita dropping faster than I'd like to see and Wii U back into the chaos. At minimum it appears that the Vita is finally moving towards replacing the PSP which could lead toward sales stabilizing at some point.

3DS is the really crazy story though, it continues to go down despite "significant" releases. I won't pretend that this was a huge game but none the less it's surprising to see such a big drop when the 3DS was the only system to get a new game this week. To be fair, sales have been more depressed than normal and it probably is just people waiting for Golden Week.

With an install base like the 3DS' a game debuting with 44,000 sold isn't going to move many systems.
