Media Create Sales: Week 41, 2012 (Oct 08 - Oct 14)

Konami has announced Jikkyo Powerful Pro Yakyu 2012 Complete for PS3, PSP, and Vita at ¥6,980, ¥5,250, and ¥6,480 respectively. PS3/Vita owners of the original release can net the update for ¥2,500 off of PSN. If you remember earlier in the year the vanilla version of the game launched to disappointing sales. Media Create attributed it to the return of the Complete releases in 2011. Obviously this will not help the vanilla release of 2013 sell well, haha.

My god, I just realized Level-5 lineup until the end of the year:

-Fantas Life

I really hope they'll publish IE3 (Ogre?) in PAL both for DS and 3DS, exploiting the re-work done for the Japanese collection
Man, I don't even know how they'll release IE3. They probably won't release all 3 games at the same time because The Ogre is the "Pokemon Yellow" of IE3, but at this point of the DS's life if they don't release The Ogre soon then I can't see how they could get enough sales from it. Unless Nintendo decides to not translate The Ogre which would quite frankly piss me off.

Another scenario would be to skip Spark and Bomber and only release The Ogre, but that would mean missing out on much of the
angels and demons
sidestory.

I know that what I want is for all 3 to be released eventually, whether it be all at the same time or The Ogre a little bit after Spark/Bomber doesn't really matter, but I have no idea what kind of plans Nintendo and Level 5 have for them.

I know that what I want is for all 3 to be released eventually, whether it be all at the same time or The Ogre a little bit after Spark/Bomber doesn't really matter, but I have no idea what kind of plans Nintendo and Level 5 have for them.

It's a complicate situation.
I think that they should try to not waste too much time both considering how the anime-cartoon fever usually last (2/4 years) and how the DS/3DS transition should take place in 2013 (with Pokemon as the last huge release on DS right now)
Probably, the best way to not waste time and getting revenues not only "now" (early 13 with IE3) but also later (with the next releases available on 3DS) should be to create some sort of "deluxe pack" as did with the Collection in Japan. so, publish 3 and Ogre on the same cartridge both for DS and 3DS, in early 13. This way they could guide the transition from the DS to the 3DS publishing Go on 3DS in early 14.
Another option could be to release 3 in early 13, Ogre as a Christmas 13 title (a "bridge" title) to release IE GO in early 14. But also in this case, considering that they already have it done and ready thanks to the collection for Japan, they should release them (IE3 and Ogre) both for DS and 3DS.
Imho, any other solution would be a mistake, with the worst scenario consisting in simply localizing only for DS IE3 in early 13 and Ogre in early 14...

I suspect NOE will bring IE3 Spark/Bomber in Q1 2013 and just skip Ogre entirely before going to Go. Are they keeping releases pretty well timed with the show?

yes they are. with the exception of Strikers for Wii that inlcudes characters from the third series not yet on air (correct me if I'm wrong)

It's really sad how 99% of western games just can't succeed in Japan no matter how good they are. At leas 10k people will be enjoying Dishonored.

It does, and NOE probably pushed it ahead to have *something* for the system this fall.

I sort of wonder if NOE will bother with another Wii Strikers next year (either Xtreme or Go) or just wait for a Wii U installment?

In the last 3 or so years (let's say that is about as far back as I can remember reliably) not a single Japanese gamer I've spoken to has known any of the games I told them I enjoy playing (most of these people into games to some degree), things like Fallout, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed, Saint's Row, etc.

thanks for the confirmation!
about Strikers, if I'd be Hino, I'd add an HD up-port Wii U version to the Striker Go game to be ported in the west in '13 (as probably - just probably up to now - done with LBX and its 3DS version)
Sooner or later the IE bubble will burst over here, considering how it is strongly related to the cartoon series (take a look: in Italy and Spain is a HUGe success, and those are the 2 countires were the cartoon has more than decent hiring on public television)

I'm hopeful as well, but I get the feeling it's going to sadly be pretty much overshadowed entirely by animal crossing.

Getting the game out earlier in the 3DS' life would've been great.. launching only a few weeks after animal crossing.. not so great.

I wish it could follow Rune Factory/Harvest Moon path...but it will not. sadly.

I believe tastes play a very important role in addition to marketing; it's not like if there are much more people who would enjoy it even if they were given the game for free.

Not to mention that situation has gotten better all the time. Call of Duty sells decent amount even in Japan every year and if I remember right Battlefield 3 and Uncharted 3 also sold over 100k first week last year. GTA games sold well even during last gen.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Dont know why L5 thought it would be good to release it in the same time frame as Animal Crossing - they probably will also want to release Youkai Watch next September the same time as the next Pokemon.

Modest success for smaller IPs but not hot for the bigger ones, I think. Would a comparison with DS or PSP on similar time frame too much to ask?

Wonder how many of those games are really selling smaller amt of units that Famitsu/MC simply isn't tracking?

With Miku Project MIRAI for example, supposedly there was monthly sales numbers in this month's Dengeki G's Magazine w/ sales of 6,786 units for August, bringing up the total to 171K units LTD.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Source? That'd be pretty good.

Enterbrain sometimes stops showing increases in sales for some games, at least on published information (can't know what's inside their database), but it's usually for old games (1 year-old or more). In general, though, trackers don't stop tracking games, especially such new game as Project Mirai. It's mostly automatic anyway - a copy is sold and it's registered in the system.

In that game's case, Dengeki has always been ahead of the other trackers. First week, it had 95k against 89k (EB). The difference only increased as time went by: after 1 month, 139k (AMW) against 123k (EB); after 3 months, 160k (AMW) x 136k (EB).

The reason could be the game selling more on stores covered by AMW and less on stores covered by Famitsu; it could be the extrapolation done by one tracker is over/under-representing the actual sales that are happening, among other reasons.

It's hard to know which is right and which is wrong. Unless the publishers says they shipped 200k copies and a tracker says there have been 220k copies to costumers, we can't really point and say they're wrong with any certainty.

The only thing that is fair to say is that the game is still selling a small but noticeable amount off the charts

Those dc vs vita software sales after 43 weeks is interesting. Anyone have numbers for other systems, particularly the lesser performing handhelds?

I still don't understand this at all. I mean I wasn't expecting much 600k from Revelations, but it barely outsold the mercaneries on the same exact platform. So either Mercanaries was fluke and a consequence of the terrible 3DS library last year or barely any other RE fan bought 3DS systems.

Add that the last MC numbers known were 137.880 just before Golden Week. The game was on top 50 several weeks (7 weeks more), so it's safe to guess that MC numbers are closer to Dengeki than Famitsu.

That list is terribly outdated, in general we can say that most of third party titles have found success on the 3DS platform.

There is only one painful bomb, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, that flop cannot be explained, or better said justified. Other titles could have certainly sold better for example Resident Evil: Revelations but the game is far from being a failure in Japan. The remaining bombs aren't noticeable titles, maybe I'd exclude Dragon Quest: Slime Morimori 3 (did it manage to sell its first shipment?) which sold really bad and it cannot be considered niche although it is niche for Dragon Quest standards.

What do you mean? I mean, you can't prove anything conclusively to be sure, but there are plenty of clear explanations for why that might have happened.

I agree, just adding that various titles found very good performances, such as Senran Kagura 1 and 2, Etrian Oddissey, Rune Factory, Bravely Default or Harvest moon. Some of those entries registered records in terms of brand performances, or in terms of comparable past titles.

I believe tastes play a very important role in addition to marketing; it's not like if there are much more people who would enjoy it even if they were given the game for free.

This might be true, but why have Japanese games sold well in the West (historically) with the trend just shifting, predominately with JRPG's taking the biggest decline?

Western territories can't wait till some games get localized, even if its a niche genre. IMHO there isn't the same small group of people waiting for the next Bethesda, Bioware or Activision property. Is Western taste more diverse?

It's really sad how 99% of western games just can't succeed in Japan no matter how good they are. At leas 10k people will be enjoying Dishonored.
No idea why they're so against non-JP games. You'd think they like stealth with all the MGS they buy but I guess Dishonored is below their standards

It's the same as niche titles in the west not selling well (no, a OT on GAF absolutely does not mean it's been a resounding sales success): lack of proper advertising. Can't expect folks to spend good bits of money on western titles they know next to nothing about and look similarly dark and violent as all the other ones. It certainly does not help that western games have traditionally had the stigma of being hard to learn, cumbersome games. Remember that PC FPS gaming never really took off in Japan, DooM wasn't an office hit, and you didn't see Wolfenstein 3D running on computers in Radio Shacks inside shopping malls.
