Media Create Sales: Week 45, 2013 (Nov 04 - Nov 10)

Maybe people are just satisfied with what they got with 3D Land and see no reason to spend that much money on Wii U for another 3D Mario game. At least that would be my idea if the game doesn't open signficantly ahead of Pikmin.

If they belive money spent on advertising won't increase profits from game then there's no point in advertising.

The game regardless of initial week will have stronger legs than most games, but yea its very likely it will be the worst selling 3D Mario ever. Sunshine is out of reach

as it should be. It seems to be the less inspired entry in the (3D) series so it gets what it deserves

Tsutaya said the Vita version of God Eater 2 outsold the PSP one 2 to 1 on their stores. (I guess people were buying the PSP game elsewhere...)

Vita TV sales were meh, with the cheaper standalone slightly ahead.

The PS3 version of WE2014 sold about 60% of what WE2013 did last year.

http://mantan-web.jp/2013/11/19/20131119dog00m200013000c.html

Or people buying Vita version instead of PSP version.

We will see if Vita TV sales is meh or no tomorrow.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Wait, so are we already declaring SM3DW a bomba? Seems premature even taking into account the poor COMGNET numbers.

I think we're simply establishing what would constitute a bomba at this stage rather than reading all the way into COMGNET which is still oddly disconcerting just days away from launch.

100k would be a bomba I feel because putting 3D Mario into the same sales set as Pikmin 3 is wholly bizarre and denotes games not selling to any more than a rabid hardcore Nintendo base/disappearing install base thats forgotten the console completely and only recent purchasers still buying software.

160k is where I'm plopping my flag going from install base of WiiU compared to 3DS and 3D Land's performance. It sold 343k launch with a 2 million base, WiiU has half that and so the 160-170k zone feels apt but on the lower end.

200K+ is probably where people want it to be for the sake of not dipping below a psychological line that 3D Mario normally always sells over.

As I said earlier, I don't think SCEJ is marketing Vita TV outside of the audience reading Famitsu, and checking their web presence so I wouldn't be surprised seeing a soft launch.

How much stock can one place into Amazon bestseller listings? 3D World's consistently been shifting between the #1 and #2 spot for the last couple of days along with Lightning Returns.

It depends if Wii U owners responded by poor stocking of Wii U games at brick and Mortar stores by shopping online, or they haven't made that move yet. We just don't know.

So Takao noticed something interesting in a different thread:

This was originally announced as an SCE Japan Studio game, but it seems it's actually a collaborative effort developed by Shift (God Eater), and Dimps (a whole lot of stuff, notably Street Fighter IV and some bad Sonic games). It's a 2014 release on Vita.

http://remoon.blog15.fc2.com/blog-entry-28234.html

It seems that Sony has responded to the risk of losing popular franchises to other platforms by... hiring the dev teams of said franchises to make similar games that Sony owns the IP for.

Freedom Wars would effectively be Demon's Souls 2 existing in a post Dark Souls world. Of course, it seems like Demon's Souls 2 is going to exist in this post Dark Souls world. I dunno what Sony's doing.

Understandable since I don't think they know either.

Last time Sales-Age tried to predict the new Vita model, they were expecting about half of what the new model actually did.

Then again, I can understand expecting Vita failure.

Sony should hire Tri-Ace to make Fantasy Stahr.

That's almost as if SCE and SE were to collaborate on a new RPG called Conclusive Illusion.

Apparently SCE is developing a Final Fantasy clone for PS4. Usually companies make knock offs for games not on their hardware, but okay.

Well there's been better times to put all your faith in Squenix.
Probably originated from ps3 doomgate when they went multiplatform.

Didn't they already do that when they made Legend of Dragoon? Which came life after the success of FF7 to my knowledge.

I think we finally figured out Toriyamas next project!

I can understand the strategy. They managed to carve out a life for Vita with hunting game after hunting game and want that to continue hence Freedom Wars, and so they're eyeing up a similar strategy for PS4 in Japan with action RPG's and jRPG's to fill a calendar.

Weird, weird time for japanese development really. Kinda feels all on the line with how this coming generation goes.

Staking an ownership of something in the popular gaming genres.

It's questionable if it's a right move, but given how they've lost gaming franchises of genres that they previously never dabbled in, it's probably a move to plant a flag in every major gaming genre, for better or worse.

It's like needing to have an FPS in their line-up of first-party exclusives. Killzone doesn't do very well compared to other blockbuster FPSes, but it fills the niche.

I don't know if FFVII was the reason why that game was developed, but it certainly was developed internally at SCEJ. It was a very expensive project at the time ($16 million) and apparently only made money with western sales.

I don't see how more jrpg's is a bad thing seeing how long SE take with ff.

People complain about scej slacking off so isn't this a good thing, especially with all these companies moving to mobile

Nintendo is marketing 3D World very hard. You guys can see on amazon that even 3D Land got a bump because of it, together with almost every bundle of the Wiiu.

Let'see if they will succed. I, personally, am not going to buy Mario, since Taiko is a priority, but a couple of friends that have never even thought about buying the Wiiu are going to get just because of Mario (And the promise of future games like Kart). It's anedoctal, but, hey, it's better than ever for me. lol

I think Taiko Drum Wii U is going to be a bigger sales disappointment than SM3D World.

I thin SM3D land is going to have much shorter legs than previous entries just like NSMBU and probably that drum game. Its weird since Nintendo titles usually have great legs but when paired with the WiiU it seems those legs are broken.

I wonder what Namco Bandai will then do. There's obviously going to be more on 3DS, but they like their home console releases.
Well , if they are adamant to keep making console releases and feel Wii U is not up to the job for it their other options are either PS3 or PS4*
.

Really? I actually got more optimistic about the title when the PAD collaboration was announced. Though, I think shinra said it earlier, Taiko seems like a game that sells very well on a platform that is selling very well. So I guess the pessimism is warranted :p

Namco already made an iPad version of Taiko with its own drum set. They're fine for that series if the Wii U is truly dead and they have to move on.

Its hard to predict. On one hand its taiko and a massive franchise, probably the first one on the u, on the other, with the exception of nintendoland, no other party game succeded.

Theres interest in the series, thats for sure, otherwise we wouldnt have the last one charting every week, so, it would be entirely on the platffom fault... Lets see.

Also, the reason we have those console versions is because namco makes a very good profit on those drums, where they coudnt do for just a portable. I dont know what they could do if it bombs. I first meet the series on the ps2, which was were the series met her highest sales and also the highest lows, specially because namco released iterations like guitar hero. On the wii the series got a much better treatment which resulted in constant sales. Nintendo cathering to the family helped a lot. Sony never did that much and taiko is the type of game people really like to play in arcades together... Just like the type that nintendo enforces people.

I think right now they know where their audience is and if it bombs, they will probably try again next year. If not, they will consider the playstation 4. Its much like the tales situation. And if that happens ill go to sony, since im a taiko whore.

Also, Blackjace, that colab means nothings. Taiko got a lot of those. Theres also dqx colabs, hatsune miku, nintendo, itsnothing new to the series.

And michaelius, its not going to release on the vita, you can relax.

i wonder why there is so much negative feeling with Taiko and Mario 3D...
they are going to sell good during the holidays, Mario sells well, Taiko is the perfect family game, both are targeted for children

Of course we have to consider the limited userbase Wii U has, so don't expect Taiko selling 600k as the latest one did on Wii, but it has good chances to become the best 3rd party seller on the platform (so around 300k)

I see "marketing" has reared its head again, or rather advertising.
(People should read this post.)

Anyway, Vita TV really doesn't seem like something fundamentally well-suited for the Japanese market. That's a failure in marketing - but then I don't think it was designed for the Japanese market anyway.

RE: Taiko; what if... people are simply satisfied playing it on the Wii....? It really doesn't seem like something people go out and buy a system for.

I forgot to say, but i found it very puzzling in the taiko ad that they outright say that its not for wii, but for wiiu.

I dont think releasing on the u is a bad idea, but i think the best option would be to do another wii version. Not trying to create an audience on another platform like the ps3 or doing on the wiiu, which is yet to attract the public for it, but i think nintendo got a hand in it. Better having a big third party game on the holidays than nothing.

Edit: Seems like Shinra agrees with me. lol Taiko is selling till this day on the wii and it will keep selling even after the wiiu version releases. Another wii one would sell pretty well. If Namco wanted to create an audience on the U, they should try a cross platform version, with the wiiu having some exclusive features.

Lets see how it sells and if it will sell well or well for an wiiu game just like the rest of it.

Taiko games tend to move little first week (like sub 30k in some cases), the Wii U game's performance really depends on it's legs. Which admittedly haven't been great for Wii U games so far.

I think WiiU will have a good christmas. For the first time since launch, people are starting to talk about it. Teach 500+ elementary school students and there was nothing about the WIIU they were only talking about Pokemon/3D3 and Smartphone games.

It has changed. My current english target is "What do you want for Christmas?" And so far the 2nd most common answer is "A WiiU" (after 3DS games). I have only polled a few classes so far but the WiiU has gone from "What's that?" to "I want that" over the last month. It still might be too expensive for if the be given to all these kids who want it but for the first time I am seeing students have the desire to own one.

These students could not have cared less about it a few months ago. Not sure what changed. And it's NOT mario. Of the students I asked what game they want not a single student said Mario. It was Taiko or Wii Party, or Pikmin or the 2D mario.

Makes me sad actually. Not that those are bad games but somehow 3D world is not picking up traction. Not sure why.

Nintendo Land isn't even a party game, the majority of games included are single player only. And Wii Party U will outsell NL when all is said and done.

Taiko isn't primarily a party game either, it is a music game. And it too will outsell NL.

Edit: NSMBU with its strong 4 player gameplay is more of a party game than NL. It sold better too.

Taiko is a party game on its core. The whole deal of the game is playing songs with your friends. You can play alone too and thats fun, but thats also true for any game ever.

People buy taiko to have the same experience of the arcade on its house. The only people that like to play alone are the diehards, but they are the minority. Also, Taiko got a lot of minigames modes and other stuff to gather interest. It really isnt just a music game.

Well, the family bundles should do well for the holidays, and they're actually quite cheap since you got 2 to 3 games included. With some healthy bit of advertising, there's no reason for the Wii U to straight out bomb (though the competition from the 3DS is really tough). The real question is whether Nintendo will be able to keep the momentuml going, or if the console's sales are gonna take a nose dive after New Year.
