Media Create Sales: Week 45, 2013 (Nov 04 - Nov 10)

I'm curious how Gaf thinks the PS4 is going to perform in Japan. Sony's first-party output is almost irrelevant and the big Japanese franchises aren't gonna come out every month. Not sure how niche games are supposed to carry the system.

It should easily outsell PS3 due to lack of competition but overall home consoles will probably sell less.

So

PS4>PS3
PS4+Wii U + Xbone < Wii+PS3+X360

Yes i agree but the biggest reason we will see a contraction next to phones will be the loss of the Wii 's installbase.

So, the PS4 sold in one day in NA what will sell in a year in Japan. Tier 4 classification vindicated.

Whats your definition of bomba? how many millions WW?

At launch, PS3 GT6 won't even register on the radar. After years of bundling and sales, I guess less than 5 million WW.

The PS4 doesn't really have any big name exclusives coming in 2014 unless FFXV makes it and the console still has to compete against mobile and handhelds.

It all depend on how the developer and publisher reacted to PS4 I think. Japan had rough start with Generation 7 that costed them many developer and make the market highly polarized. Just hope that there'll be games that ignited console market in Japan once more.

Seems like everything is in decline these days.

3DS tracking 6m+ behind the DS so far.

Wii U not even @ 1/4 what the Wii was doing (Wii was at 4m+ by this point).

Vita selling like shit.

Previous million sellers struggling to do 300k (PES, Dynasty warriors etc)

I'm not sure if the PS4 can change anything tbh.

Well mobile is growing :p,

Commuter culture is big in Japan, no wonder mobile is popular. I don't know if people play with their cellphone openly in train, since I though it's kinda shunned thing to do. Need someone who lives there on this kind of thing.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I'm gonna go with SM3D World opening around 150-175K and be around 500K by January. It will show decent legs because it is being released right in time for the holiday rush.

People for sure play games on their commute. Its talking on a phone while on the train/bus is what you're not supposed to do.

I think I could consider a performance like this to at least be successful overall, given the situation the platform is in.

That is assuming there is at least a moderate Wii U bump in tandem. If it's entirely selling to the existing audience that would be bad.

Any chance of Sony and Nintendo next handhelds being Android smartphones with exclusive content on top of that?

3ds is prtty populr, honestly.
and if a nintendo segment has being jeopardized, that's the home one.
and I imagine that, if sometimes they'll decide to drop the home consoles, their handheld could even increas in popularity

I don't think their next handheld will be as popular as the 3DS, just as 3DS isn't as popular as the DS. In fact, people in Japan are buying smartphones now and that doesn't shows any sign of stopping at all.

Even if they dropped their home consoles and sticked to handhelds, I don't think an exclusively gaming portable will sell well in the future.

For Nintendo, I suspect they will stay the course since the 3DS hasn't had a total collapse like the Wii U or Vita.

For Sony, the Vita is effectively a dead system in every region except Japan and it's not doing that hot in Japan either. The situation is untenable. They're either going to release an Android device with integrated controls or not release a handheld at all.

Here's what Shu last said on the matter:

CVG said:
CVG: With regards to PS Vita, it has struggled to match the kind of sales Sony achieved with PSP. And considering the decline of the handheld market in general, I wonder if you think Vita will be Sony's final handheld? In the long-term, is this a business you feel you can still pursue?

Yoshida: Yeah I think we can still pursue it, and I don't think we have to make that decision now. Also, the distinction between the portables and mobile is [blurring], because there are all kinds of hybrids, different form factors and operating systems can still be conceived, in terms of how we characterise portable and mobile. We still like PS Vita and we know people who buy it really like it.

Unless Nintendo sticks with the 3DS for a gigantic length of time I don't feel there's enough decline/incentive for them to consider a major strategy change yet.

If we're looking at a new handheld in 2-3 years, the amount of market change isn't likely to be catastrophic. Another 5-6 years beyond that however could be a very different story.

I doubt Nintendo would release a smartphone and Sony already has one it can build on they want to.I think it's more likely Nintendo will launch a handheld that supports all the indie friendly development tools from the start and try to make it as easy as possible to port smartphone and tablet games/apps to it.

Under Iwata there's a 0% chance of it happening. Under new management maybe there's a small chance.

In my opinion, adding smartphone tech is Nintendo's best chance at beating DS numbers, but it would also introduce a lot of additional hands taking away money from those sales, so not going that route makes sense to me too.

Under Sony there's a 0% chance they'll make another handheld that's not a smartphone. Obviously there's already a phone that happens to play games, but I think there's an ok chance they'll make a game device that happens to be a phone in a few years.

with all the ffx talk any chance could you give us a comparison between ffx ps3 and khhd1.5

I'd really like to see this as well.

A 250-300k opening for GE2 Vita seems likely, no?

Seems like it. I would have guessed a higher number, but seeing the initial shipment is of "just" 500k for both SKUs combined, I'd say it'd be hard for the Vita version to surpass 300k on its first week.

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Tsutaya?
Tsutaya is a major retailer with 1,444 retail stores (613 that sell new games) all across Japan.

What is Comgnet?
Comgnet is the website for the retailer "COMG!" that has 16 retail stores across one prefecture in Japan.

Why post these rankings?
They are released three days before Media Create + Famitsu + Dengeki give us nationwide sales, so we get a general indication of how well the games will perform relative to their competition.

How accurate is Tsutaya compared to nationwide retail tracking services?
It's large enough that it gives a very probable indication of future sales rankings, but it's not large enough to be definitive.

Famitsu: ~3,600 stores
Media Create + Dengeki: >3,000 stores
Tsutaya: 613 stores
Comgnet: 16 stores

I find it odd that this game would actually need a demo. It's not like the core gameplay is going to be any different from the mobile game.
It's the exact same

I thought it was a little different? Well, if anything, at least it will help people understand how the systems work without microtransactions.

Thanks for the answers.

I still think the Vita has a chance as a niche device in Japan (it was made as a device that can go down in price, like smartphones, am I right?). If we get at least some good games out of there, that's all that matters for me.
I'm sure Sony will be looking into some type of hybrid handheld (smartphone + exclusives) or abandon handhelds (which would be a shame).

Nintendo's the one who interests me the most though. Let's see what will happen in 3~4 years then.

Hasn't Sony already gone mobile for gaming already in a way? At least with their line of Xperia Play. Is that still being supported with new models? I haven't kept up with it, but I remember it being released like 2 years ago with added gamepad and game support. No idea how it's done. but it was released before the Vita.

Are we expecting Vita to be the best-selling hardware this week?

I'm under the impression that Vita TV sold really well. Famitsu will probably release something tomorrow.

With God Eater 2 and the Vita TV, the Vita must have sold pretty nicely this week, not sure if it'll be enough to beat the 3DS though.

That depends on:

How well MH4 bundle with normal 3DS did
Vita TV being counted together with normal Vita or not

I disagree
not about possible additional decrease for the portable gaming segment, but I don't see how the HUGE DS records shoudl be set not as incredible records, but as "average results to determine if doing or not another portable device". at all.

Btw: God eater will be very successfull, and will boost Vita sales even over the actual good stable numbers; Mario will flop due to lack of itnerest in Wii U, and this will give us a clear view of the difference between those two struggling system at least in Japan.
