Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2011 (Nov 21 - Nov 27)

Retailers round 3.

Gundam could take the top spot this week. It has done very big numbers since it continued to sell very well at weekend. Everything else as expected.

Does that mean it's approaching 500k in its first week? I was expecting Mario Kart to do at least 400k.

It's a really good game, glad to see it selling well.

Any specific reason for the sudden spike in popularity for the series? Is there a new popular anime/manga out or something?

It's been the top game at the arcades for about a year now. It's also on a console now and about 99.5% identical to the arcade version.

Well it doesn't hurt that the next Unicorn just shipped which is really popular as well as a new Anime is running and it has the ever popular UC and CE stuff in it. Add OO and the small Wing fanbase which has been given plenty of love this year.

It's really a perfect storm for GEX.

Two games in the 400-500k range next week? What a week!

About Monster Hunter, remember that it's a franchise that can have legs.
And when I talk about legs, I mean...

[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (Capcom) - 2.146.467 / 4.501.975 / 47,68% 01/12/10
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Capcom) - 823.265 / 2.453.132 / 33,56% 27/03/08
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Capcom) - 746.313 / 1.723.187 / 43,31% 22/02/07
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom Unite [PSP the Best] (Capcom) - 19.829 / 1.111.876 / 1,78% 30/10/08
[PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom (Capcom) - 118.317 / 668.964 / 17,69% 01/12/05

HORI SHITTO worthy legs. Yes, even the 3rd, considering that, despite a 2 million debut, it has a first week / LTD ratio inferior to 50%, outstanding for a game with such a big opening.
And legs are much bigger when a brand comes out early in the life span of a console. Especially in the case of the 3DS, a console which will rise to high levels in the next weeks. And more hardware means more software, especially on a Nintendo console.

I hope however they obtain to increase the shipment, or to reship quickly, because 420k will not be enough for the first week. Really.

Just before the Comgnet charts come out, Amazon watch:

3DS skus

White - 7th
Blue - 12th
Pink - 15th
Red - 17th
Black - 18th

Pokepark 2 has risen a lot, from the lowe 30-40th to just out of the top 10...Kirby is 9th.
Mario & Sonic was outside the top100 during last week: now that the release is approaching, it's 26th
Mario Kart Wii is 27th (?!?!?), Wii Wheel is 55th.
Taiko 3 is 34th.
Go Vacation is in top40.
SD Gundam GG 3D is in top50 after being in the 80th position for a long time.
Family Fishing rising again
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is again in the top100, 67th
Zelda is 70th
Pokemon Rumble is just outside the top100, such as NSMB (?!?!?!?!?!?)

I just don't understand why they're doing it.
It can't be because Nintendo isn't giving them enough.
They both know how much the game can and should sell...
Bizarre...

Confirmation that Capcom is shipping just 420,000 copies of MH3G (300,000 for the game on its own, 100,000 for the Slide Pad bundle, and 20,000 for the 3DS system bundle)

http://andriasang.com/comz6o/mh3g_shipment/

That is not enough, plain and simple. I predict mass shortages.

Could it just be misinformation capcom is putting out to try and make people think there'll be shortages so they're more likely to pre order or go hunting for it?

Their own forecasts calls for 1m sold through by March/April of 2012 right? Shipping near half a milli in the first shipment sounds exactly like they are shipping not expecting anything but 1m by March/April.

Which is crazy.
I mean, we've seen hardware sales being boosted simply because of this game as it is.
And with the Holiday season out, we're going to see software hitting big.

Sinobi is a reliable source, so I'd say it's an accurate shipment figure. Doesn't preclude the notion that they're ready to ship more copies when needed, though.

As others have suggested they probably just want to avoid a MHTri Wii situation. Also not unusual for Capcom to do weird stuff with MH shipments.

Sadly, they seem to think that MH3 underperformed because it was on a Nintendo platform. :/ That seems like a strong hint that this was only done for the moneyhat, and that Capcom intends for the Nintendo exclusivity of the franchise to be temporary. They probably would have shipped twice as mich if this were a Vita launch title.

It's really quite interesting.

Is it some kind of manufacturing issue? A deliberate ploy to whip up excitement? Retailers playing it cool after Tri's overstocking and being unsure of the series on 3DS? Lack of preorders?

It's going to be a really fascinating one to watch, and I'm sure that the performance of the game - either way - will be a GAF football for a while to come.

Capcom just doesn't have a clue when it comes to shipping their own games. MH3 was them being overconfident, MHP3 was them being overly cautious, and then there's shit like Lost Planet 2 where they flooded retail with a game no one wanted and it almost instantly was thrown into the bargain bin.

Clear

CliffyB's Cock Holster
Production runs for big carts, particular those with large amounts of r/w memory, don't come cheap - things I'd expect to be true for any MH title. Overestimating demand could be a costly mistake for Capcom, so I'm not entirely surprised they are seemingly erring on the side of caution.

This way -> full shelves with MHtriG on 17.Dec. to advertice 3DS during Vita launch.

I think it has more to do with both Capcom and Nintendo beeing a bit more cautious in the beginning, since they don`t know if the current userbase is that much into MH and also because of possible hardware shortages that could slow down MHTriG sales-potential and its potential as a long-term seller if the game is way overshipped.

Nearly 2 million people have bought 3DSs since the announcement and they've sold.... probably significantly under 2 million pieces of software since then (The best-selling game isn't even at 1/3 of that total yet). I'd wager at least 1 million of those sales came from people who bought the system with nothing in mind but playing this game.

I don't think they have quite sold 2 mil since September. This is from the week 36, the week of the announcement.

And even i am moderately surprised
Not unreasonable predictions at all.

The MH fanbase appear to be more like DQ fans in that they'll flock to the hardware, unlike (say) Tales fans who just love their PlayStations.

sorry - what evidence is of that?!

MH has moved once and the sales went DOWN. If the MH fans are going to flock to 3DS, why are you agreeing with 1.7m sales? Surely we're going to see 4m+ "flock" right?

Even Capcom are revising down, i've no idea why fans are holding onto these crazy numbers.

P.S. I wouldn't take it as guaranteed that MH4 -is- going to 3DS. If the 3G numbers do come in under 1m then it's going to get "Monster Hunter 3"'ed (PS3-->Wii)

MH3 wasn't ever actually announced for the PS3, I don't think. I just think it was an assumption people made.

Also, it's still early gen for the 3DS. People expecting MHP2 numbers are dreaming. MH had to build up to those numbers.

MH3 wasn't ever actually announced for the PS3

was done in a smilar-ish way to MH4 , sans trailer.

TGS (year escapes me) - nothing really shown outside the logo and the PS3 logo.

I don't recall anything being shown for MH4 other than the logo at the end of the trailer - and i'd suspect as a common practice that there's a "get out" clause based on how the 3DS/MH3 does.

Again, I still refuse to believe Capcom would walk away from the active PSP market given they could throw out a MH4th or MH3 FINAL and sell 4-5 million copies, money hats or not, there's no real incentive for them to do that and damage the whole "MH-industry". I suspect we'll get a PSP based announcement right after MH3G drops.

Im sure it'll be popular enough...

that's based on the assumption that X million invested PSP fans are going to buy a new piece of hardware and the -G- variant of a game they've dropped XXXX hours into. I know the argument goes that the fans are MAD CRAZY and will do it all for the new subspecies but the crux of the game is the social aspect - you need a GROUP BUY IN to get the same experience and i don't think it's going to happen.

AGain - i'm predicting 800k sales in Japan. TOTAL. Might go up when it bargain bins, but i think fans and capcom have read this one completely wrong. Victory lap for me in January! ;)

It was actually. Nintendo is clearly the one aggressively going after the series though, I'm sure MH4 will be RE4'd at best.

Heh. I stand corrected. Explains a few of the meltdowns in that thread a lot better. I'd not heard of MH outside of MC threads, so it meant as much to me as an announcement that (say) the next Love and Berry was switching platforms.

So yeah, they probably do have an out if MH3D's sales are tepid.
