These sound like good numbers to me..? It didn't fall that far below 3DS and wasn't the 3DS the highest handheld launch(could be remembering wrong)? Granted it is in the holiday season so one would expect larger numbers.

Nope.

GBA: 611,504 (5 days, I think?)
DS: 441,485 (2 days)
PSP: 166,074 (1 day)

I believe NDS. It sold around 441k for 2 days (or a week, not sure).

Did a quick query, and GBA apparently sold 611k in its first week. Not sure how many days that actually was though.

EDIT: Sloooooow

EDIT2: Also Road posted this earlier in the thread, showing that GBA was the best system ever.

For comparison, 3DS sold its first two days total (371k) in just one day, since Nikkei reported of the sold out on the launch day, while Vita sold 320k in two entire days.

However, good good launch. The fact we didn't get the best selling game scares me a little bit, especially since I fear that software could have not sold so much...
Another thing: strange time for a Famitsu update. Does it mean we'll have a new article with 3DS numbers?

Launch numbers don't really mean much. Give it a good 6 months on the market and see then.My biggest concern will be if Sony has to drop the price too early then it will be time for heads to roll up top as another product line bleeds money.

You are on to something. It is premature a bit but Vita will not need a price cut down the road. The device is too expensive
unless Sony go for a subscription-based model
.

It's a decent start. Don't forget that they had to split the shipment across both SKUs, so they no doubt wanted to ensure that there's enough stock of both SKUs over the next couple of weeks.

But then again, it's never about the explosion that comes right out of the gate. Rather it's about how it does over the next month or two. With Tales of Innocence R being the only game scheduled for January and Gravity Daze in February (neither of which I would expect to be huge sellers) it may have a tough time maintaining its momentum (especially with the 3DS' sales exploding now!)

Here's hoping that FFX HD comes quickly!

So on a scale of one to ten how apocalyptic is this?

So you guys have highlighted a major problem with the system. The price is high, and we may be in for a software drought, though how sever we don't know exactly at this point. Sony probably can't afford a major price drop like Nintendo did with the 3DS. I doubt they will take such a huge risk with a price drop, to add that much more red ink to their financials, which the markets would react negatively too. I think with the PS3 as an example, they will probably wait out a price drop till the system becomes profitable. The value of the Yen is another stepping stone domestically. And I think they are content on second world wide, especially when second place is such a lucrative position in the handheld realm.

Though the PSP has shown that it doesn't matter how lukewarm your system has been selling, when you introduce the right software it can revitalize that system. So Sony should be either creating new system selling software, or moneyhating third parties to find the next big hit. I doubt Nintendo will release MH or DQ from its grip anytime soon.

So my predictions for the system is that after the holidays we are going to probably see a repeat performance ala the 3DS before price drop, however the Vita doesn't have any software announced in the likes of Mario, Mario Kart or MH that are of the system selling quantities we are currently seeing for the 3DS.

I doubt either handhelds will have to worry too much about sales. This past generation in one fell swoop made handhelds the dominant gaming platforms in the country.

It's still the west that worries me about handheld gamings fortunes. We've seen a pretty lack response to the market at all by developers and publishers, the biggest push in recent memory seems to be coming off the success of the phone market. The west is in flux.

Japan just seems to have decided they'll take their consoles on the go please.

The thing is there is so much money to be made on handhelds...if they would actually try! Instead of embarrassing copied idea games or lazy licensed games, much less overpriced ports.

It's kinda sad.

Maybe, but there wasn't a PSN version to compete with back then.
It'd be interesting if Sony posted those figures for once - just to give a picture on launch crowd preferences.
IIRC the only time we ever saw something on that was some Atlus PSP game selling 10% of retail on PSN - and that's hardly representative of anything.

How long before people start rumoring Vita-Phone redesign ;) Oh wait, dibs on calling it first!
Anyway if the west portable gaming continues on the road to free-to-play domination, only one of the handhelds has a chance to share that pie at all.

Well we haven't seen the full extent of Vita's 2012 lineup. FFX HD is probably not far off (HD remasters don't typically take very long) and there's a good chance that other PS2/PSP remasters (like MGS2 & 3) will be coming shortly too.

I reckon that they'll pad the Vita's early 2012 lineup with ports and have the new big titles towards the end of the year (most of which will probably be announced at E3)

Also this...

is very true. Who knows what'll happen with the Vita 2 or 3 years from now? For the immediate future though, I reckon it'll have a tough time.

I think the "HD port" trend is yet to appear. MegaTen, Persona, FF or even Tales of HD variations have a good chance to land on Vita. The hardware is capable, the audience is still hanging around and the effort is not too demanding. Vita library may very well be able to rely partly on HD remixes.

Any word on FF13-2's first week yet?

The shelf I saw full of them yesterday was not a good sign

Vita on the other hand is doing great, the people in the other thread have no idea what they are talking about, it seems to already have a high tie ratio from the # of games that are selling...in general I predict the "Japan PSP industry" is basically confirmed to move smoothly to PS Vita, that doesn't mean it will be successful worldwide but I'm pretty sure it's going to be doing pretty well in Japan.

nothing about MH3G's second shipment? Or 3DS sales this week?

It seems so. Last two weeks we had infos about 3DS sales due to

1)Mario Kart 7's debut being the best one for 3DS, with a big number for hardware as well
2)MH3G, best debut for 3DS again, and 3DS reaching ad overcoming the 3 millions landmark.

So, we only know that 3DS did less than 700k (otherwise, we would have the press release about 3DS over 4 millions ) :p

However, this should be the first time two direct competitors obtain to have a 300+k launch, right?

Even if Vita will have some difficulties due to the scarce lineup of following months, this is a good sign of the strenght of the portable market in Japan, so big now that both the consoles can do good numbers.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

DS and PSP could do good numbers last gen - i dont see why it would be different with 3DS and Vita.

What is the week with the most hardware units sold ever ? GBA launch week ? DS, W50 in 2005 ? PS2 launch week ?

This past week may have very well broken that record.

Has any of your current predictions come close to reality? BurntPork starts to feel the heat.

Chris has no pity for anyone.
ANYONE.

However, I see the main selling Vita launch game ( Minna no Golf 6 ) doing 50-60k, Uncharted at 35-40k, Lord of Apocalypse at 20k, and then... who knows.

These prediction are done following the info coming from Comgnet Weekly Sales Ranking, since the pt have almost always been (there are very few exceptions ) the maximum number of thousands possible for a certain game.

The discrepancy in that week is incredible. A 250K units difference between Famitsu and MC. That's probably in the neighborhood of $50M in revenue.

Edit: OK, that makes sense. Thanks for setting me straight.

The Famitsu hardware numbers aren't right, though. They are from when Famitsu used to combine the sales of the two weeks during the end of the year and report just once (that's also why the software list only has home console games without rankings). Garaph has those hardware sales divided by two for the sake of keeping them weekly.

Joshua has divided the 2 weeks' Famitsu combined hw by 2. Using the real seperated numbers it's 1104k Famitsu to 1050k Media Create.

Edit: I'm slow again
