Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2013 (Feb 18 - Feb 24)

Just look at the predictions about AC sales by Gaf posters, that were made after we had some signs of a possible bigger success. Now I don't have the graph here, but the guy who usually organizes the bets does, and he posted last week I think.

No one, I repeat, no one was expecting AC to have such a big success.

Well yeah no one predicted that it would end up being one of the fastest selling games of all time and smashing even it's performance last gen. That doesn't mean they didn't think it would be a big success.

Japanese twitter trend search is showing that Senran Kagura SV is sold out everywhere lol. Probably a low initial print game, but it seems like games like this and monpiece may send a message to developers as to what sells on vita in Japan.
...well-designed RPGs like Persona 4 and Demon Gaze?

Then people will have to get it form PSN store, if they really wanted that badly.
monpiece sold more than 5,000 download for the same reason I suppose.

New Super Mario Bros U wasn't a big title? Sold gangbusters on the Wii. Literally insane numbers. The Wii U version was a huge flop in comparison.

If that game can't generate sales, I seriously doubt some quality "core" games will. Wii never did well on the back of those titles anyways.

I really think NSMB U (and 2) suffer from the same problem as the Wii version of Animal Crossing. No, Nintendo, making your new games look very similar to old ones in order to be innofensive to consumers isn't a good formula to get consumers to jump at new games, especially if they're supposed to move consoles. NSMB DS was the return of 2d Mario after years without anything similar. NSMB Wii was the return of 2d Mario to consoles and the first one with 4p co-op.

NSMB2 and NSMBU, IMO, completely misread what made those games such break out hits when they decided to make them look and feel similar to the previous games in the NSMB series. They needed to stand out, not look just like the games that people already had.

lol wow u guys are amazing. popping champagne bottles over 3k increase for the Vita.

whos doing that?

if anything some people are surprised because the price drop doesnt officially happen until today. however its explained that some stores started it early so there was a slight increase.

All been pretty rational really.

You might get away with it as a sequel on the same console but you can't expect people to buy new consoles for it. Just looking at the trailers NSMBU looks so similar to the previous versions and the one for 3DS was only released not long before it.

I have no idea how they could think that game was going to move all that much HW. They needed something to make the console and the control stand out. NSMB is a big franchise but it isn't the right one to do that and they have somewhat squandered it's potential.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
At this point, I think having a full-flegged 3D Mario with a layout similar to 3D Land, but with the WOAH factor similar to Galaxy games too would have been a much, much, MUCH better way to boost hardware at launch. I'd say their next console should have a 3D Mario at launch.

NSMB2 is on it's way to sell 2 million copies. I wouldn't call that a flop.

I bet U will also reach that. It's not a good "only" game, but people will be continuing to pick it up.

Konami to release Love Plus game on Vita confirmed then.

People already proclaim their love to Vita, now they can express it.

It's gonna be like end-of-cycle-psp from the start, then?

Then that brings us to the question again of what WILL be a big system seller?

Their attempt at another Wii Sports phenomenon with Nintendoland didn't pan out. Is anyone honestly expecting the soccer mom crowd to care about Wii Fit again? I doubt anyone even uses it regularly who bought it. And if they do, why would they feel the need to upgrade?

A lot of the titles that were responsible for the Wii hysteria simply aren't going to be able to strike lightening twice; so we're left with Nintendo releasing core titles and have a huge lackluster third party lineup. In other words, GameCube.
The Gamecube argument is so lazy and disingenuous, as if the Nintendo and industry of 2002 was the Nintendo and industry of today. But setting that aside for a moment, and going with your train of thought that NONE of Nintendo's various multimillion Wii sellers have any hope of success and driving userbase, what happens if we extend that logic outward? What games do you see selling PS4 in Japan then?

Well thats the thing isnt it, the Gamecube was already showing Nintendo's waning support from the hardcore. Slip in the Wii and its ultra casual attraction and sales driver, and then take that away over a 6-7 year period in which any Gamecube hangers on were forced into the Playstation camp or went handheld only. You end up with a console thats going to do potentially worse than the Gamecube if the market hasn't grown whatsoever, and that seems to be what we're seeing here.

Anyone choosing to shift focus onto a completely different market should be wary to ever try and shift back again to the old lot so soon. Short term over long term is why Iwata is going to lose his position.

So GameCube was hardcore? I thought it was kiddy?

Wii U wasn't a planned shift, it was a planned expansion. I think the plan was to basically repeat what they did with 3DS (taking over both for DS and PSP) with Wii U (taking over for Wii and PS360) but that obviously didn't happen off the bat for various reasons. Not that it did for 3DS initially either though, which is the beauty of a year long headstart. Time to make mistakes and course correct is invaluable in this industry, which is a luxury Nintendo didn't have with N64 or GC.

And are you really saying the Japanese market hasn't grown at all since the early 2000s? Also care to answer my question and suggest what games could possibly sell PS4 in this context, or is that platform equally fucked?

Specifically the Japanese console market? I wouldn't be surprised if it shrunk. Which is why I don't think the PS4 is going to fare much better in Japan.

Putting more focus on the west probably makes a great deal of sense from that perspective, though. I'm somewhat curious how Microsoft is going to handle their next console in Japan.

Japanese home console market definitely shrunk as portables began to offer that "acceptable" PS2 visual point of entry.

Japan certainly seems to be the question for Sony these days, but its also where home console third party support has lived. So you'll get your Metal Gear's, Final Fantasy's, Yakuza's, and whatever Capcom throws out franchise wise.

Also while its not been a success of any great sort while all of Japan goes handheld only, the PS3 has always been there for the same home console audience with software support throughout its entire lifecycle. Like it or not but Nintendo really sort of loved and left an entire market base with the Wii and some late gen jRPG's didn't really seem to make up for that on Japan's end.

It seems like Vita is getting lines in Japan because of the price drop and also a few models are sold out at a few retailers:

Bodes well for next week but also for the upcoming weeks considering the rich lineup in March.

Actually, the console market decline since the early 2000s is entirely due to Sony. Both Nintendo and Microsoft sold multiple times what they had previously. Is that the trend you're talking about?

Also, I'm unsure about your answer, are you saying MGS, FF, Yakuza and Capcom games will be system sellers for PS4? It's sort of unclear? And you're saying the PS3 base will automatically migrate while there's no chance the Wii base will? I'm trying to understand exactly what your positions are here.

1) the question is how much those Nintendo franchises will drive the user base, not if. And it is a pretty big question mark. 1 million? 5 million? 50 million?

2)The wii sold from day 1 because of it's motion control hardware, & the PS4 will sell from day 1 because because it represents a 10X increase in power. When people buy a console they are buying a piece of hardware, and even if they aren't gaf-types, they still want to know that what they are buying is better than what they have at home.

Yes they need to know there are games, but a hardware purchase is still a hardware purchase.

The only question mark wrt ps4 is can MS deliver a much more compelling product at a lower price. If that happens, it is possible that Sony could even lose the Japanese market.

I was always confident that March would be a good month for the Vita in Japan, and the price drop is only going to help. What I wonder though is will PSO2 and/or Soul Sacrifice get some legs and carry the platform beyond just March. Both certainly have the capability, but it is up to the Japanese market to decide. Will be fun to watch nonetheless.

Didn't vita outsell the 3DS on launch week? Either way, I'm doubtful it'll outsell it next week, but my prediction of 20K is now starting to look ridiculous.

Yes.

EDIT: Didn't we get Day 1 numbers for 3DS and PS3 after the price drop? What were those? Maybe we'll get them for Vita as well?

To be honest, also Demon Gaze has a lot, really a lot of fanservice.
I thought Demon Gaze was a brand new IP? Which established IP(s) is also included in Demon Gaze?

Lol, the NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, and Wii U have all been labled
kiddy. It's something of a tradition.
Who called the NES and SNES for kiddy, and which system were concidering not kiddy in those generations? I grew up with NES and SNES and personally i never heard anyone called those systems for kiddy.

Well, it's time to see if Sony can make a go of the system despite the odds.

I think it would be nice for Nintendo to have a competitor that wasn't GREE/DeNA, so I wish them luck.
