Any chance we could separate off-topic communities from gaming communities? I feel everything kinda gets bunched up in one community section and makes it harder to find stuff.. JMO.

Read the OP, and I'm still not sure what this thread is about, but...

Ok boys, I've got a question.

Read this headline:

"Man Was Executed on Murder Conviction in 2017, But New DNA Evidence Points to Someone Else: Lawyer"

At first glance I was like "Lol, it was the lawyer in the library with the wrench". In the article it only says that the DNA points to the real killer.

So my question is, does a colon mean anything else than "which is the folowing"? In this case it must mean something like "says lawyer" or am I wrong?

That is unusual usage, my first reading would be it was the lawyer as well. "says lawyer" would be far more intuitive. Someone else may have a better idea, just looks strange.

Seems like incorrect usage to me. Your initial reading is correct. If they wanted to use in quotation, I believe it needs to come before the quote, not after. Source below is St. Martin's Handbook.

You are correct and the headline writer gets a paddling.

There are always stylistic choices one can make, though it is atypical in reporting. The author and copy editor are either morons or they are using this as a clickbait/attention grabbing choice to drive additional traffic to the article.
I'm sure it's the latter one. After all, I've clicked on that stupid article several times now, just because of that ridiculous headline.

I recently got fios gigabit internet with no datacaps, so I figured fuck it, I'll replace my Xbox One X in my living room with a Apple TV 4K now that I can stream all of the 4K HDR shit I want. I realized I hated the Xbox UI and would rather play GamePass games on my PC anyways.

Plus my buddy is training to be a fireman and is broke as fuck so I gave him my Xbox One X which is my do good thing of the week I guess. I also have Apple Arcade for 12 months now thanks to some promotion and there was a lot of interesting games on it. Got that SteelSeries Nimbus controller too, which is merely OK - not sure if it's worth the $60 or so I paid for it but I didn't want to pair one of my DualSense's with it.

Anywho, some of the Disney+ 4K content looks and sounds amazing. I am watching Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 for the first time right now and it looks and sounds amazing. This shit looks and sounds better than any of my physical 4K UHD discs aside from Blade Runner 2049 - which I would say it matches. Good times.

Disney+ bitrate is really good, but Apple's is still a notch better.

🤔

Congrats on the fiber. I want to walk into the light one of these days.

I went from paying $105/month for 550 Mbps down / 10Mbps up with a 12 TB datacap to $69.99/month (thanks to discounts for being healthcare IT and signing up for autopay) for 940 Mbps down / 800 Mbps up with no datacaps. Fuck Cox. I never thought I'd sing the praises of Verizon of all companies but here we are. They even gave me 12 months of PS+, PS Now, and Apple Arcade for free for switching. It's like someone knocked on my door one day and was like "merry Christmas motherfucker!".

Something I thought of today after catching up on the news:

I'm not gonna get into any specifics, but I had a chuckle earlier because if people are still bummed about the politics section being aborted. If EviLore EviLore didn’t nuke the politics section when he did, it most definitely wouldn’t have made it past this weekend 🤣 So take solace in that fact.

I haven't watched the news in a while. Feels good man.
Totally agree.

I cut out mainstream news sites long time ago. And since the politics tab is dead, all the junky topics I dont know about either. Although to be fair, I like seeing drama and calling out losers since they deserve it.

But now, I just check out CP24 for my local news and half of it is boring shit like daily covid count and car accidents. Thats fine

The net is just as enjoyable without the flaming topics, where most of my surfing is games, sports, business and checking job sites. I've been getting into YT channels where people travel the world eating street food where I have that in a small side window while I surf the net on my own. Amazing what awesome chow you can get for like $1, while here you buy a shitty Big Mac combo and it's like $9.

People (esp ones who cant handle it) should look into cutting out the ratings baiting topics and sensationalist stories and focus on other topics which are more cut and dried and hard to massage into combative topics.

You got to remember that the net makes it easy for people to post. And you got millions of people in the world who are trying to make a living off your click. So they will try to bait you in and hope you stick around.

As Howard Stern said on radio decades ago, even he said on radio it's all about combative guests who get the best reactions. If you like drama, go for it. If you don't, skip it. Toss out some pissy topics and people yelling and even he'll sit back and let the flames rise. Up to you whether you want to take part.

It's pretty hard to fake daily boxscores of hockey and baseball games, and when you read up on articles ya the editor has a certain view, but it's not a glamourized political view. Many of us chat daily in the Stocks thread. Even if you dont care about reading what random people post on a gaming site or even have $1 in the markets, it's still fun, I made some money on a tip from someone, and there isn't hammer heading divisive opinions even if someone doesn't agree. It's more chill as everyone has a common goal to have fun and make some cash. Which is something politics often isn't about.

You'd think stock people would be the ones pissing on each other's food since money is at stake, and all it takes is some bad advice and you're in the hole $10k trusting a bad tip. But you don't get that here or even dealing with people I know outside of forums. There's a certain level of respect people have even when money is at stake.

But for politics, half the time you don't even have moolah as a critical factor, and lots of political topics wont even affect you whether it goes your way or not. Yet, people fight the fight like it's WWII.

Go figure.

It's by design. The gatekeepers pit us against each other to profit off of our collective click through rate. Our drama generates the moolah for them.

I really only pay attention to local news as that's all that really affects you. Even then there's only one station I pay attention to. The LA ABC affiliate was 24/7 COVID death porn for the last year.

What was wrong with this thread?

You tell that city slicker Jim to bring back all of the good old PlayStation IPs like Jet Moto and MotorStorm and SOCOM and do it on the double!
