Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

I also have midrange PC, so I'm fully aiming at PS4 version [GZ was perfect 1080p60, zero frames dropped in Digital Foundry test].

I doubt TPP will be as consistent at 60fps as GZ was on the PS4. The scope of the world is massive in comparison. I don't know how much all of the intricacies of the world, AI, etc. will play in the game's performance, but I doubt it won't take a hit at all from all of the crazy stuff going on, especially with Mother Base. Maybe it's just numbers like with No Man's Sky and nothing will be starting to render until you get there, but there's still gotta be some calculations going on with creating Mother Base platforms in the background. I also don't know what I'm talking about at all.

Make sure to thank us later.

Thank you :P

There was so much to take in I had to watch it a couple more times and while the concept and game itself blows me away, I agree with you 100% on the timers. That looks like the opposite of fun because you know damn well that is where the microtransactions are going to come into play. That is why it is designed this way.

Peace Walker was designed the same way and didn't have microtransactions. The game didn't tell you how long the build times were going to be (you could just check the progression), but it worked in a similar way because things would progress more after a long mission than after a short one.

Some upgrades definitely took longer than 2 hours to unlock.

But we know there are microtransactions in this game. Some of this will no doubt be balanced with them in mind, else there would be no reason to even have them. How nefarious it all ends up being remains to be seen, but I don't like the looks of timers being on everything, down to even getting a new weapon. Everything about the game blows me away, but that shit is a big red flag waving.

Do I need to play GZ first?

I dont know if this us what you meant but soldiers you took back to the helicopter they may show up in Phantom Pain at Mother Base.

I want to believe this is true, because if so I have to replay some GZ missions.

About the free-to-play timers, Peace Walker's design was similar, but instead it had progress bars that filled up as you completed missions (story or side). In the early stages you might be able to unlock Level 2 of a Stun Grenade or something after just one mission. As you got to the more advanced stuff, things got pretty ridiculous; 20 to 30 missions to craft everything, and you only have enough GMP to work on a few things at once. Always be grinding.

MGSV seems to have moved to a purely time-based system, though it remains to be seen whether it's real time or in-game time. Real time is a pretty safe guess, though, considering they're attaching microtransactions to it this time; if you could just skip crafting times with the Phantom Cigar there'd be no reason to open your wallet for Konami.

I think it's a pretty shitty way of designing a game, personally. I really can't see it as anything but a way of wasting the player's time. You put effort into finding soldiers, Fultoning them, organizing them into teams at your personally-designed home base - I think that's all fantastic. But then grinding out missions in PW, or sitting through timers in TPP... why? Why not just let you craft things instantly as long as you have the required R&D level and GMP? It's not like the game doesn't take liberties with real-life logistics elsewhere. This is just going to lead to me leaving my PS4 on for hours at a time when I'm not playing the game.

If it turns out this way, then I will stop playing the game cold. It will be an otherwise incredible game ruined by an insidious free to play system that has no business being in a full retail title. Especially one of this magnitude.

I think it'll be in-game time and you will be able to fast forward with the cigar but the money to purchase items is where the microtransactions come in so it'll probably be hard to come by in-game.

Fulton snakehole ftw!

And given enough time, could you steal an entire base (not the actual structure ofc) but all soldiers, animals, cargo, guns and so on.

Less than a month away for this behemoth to be released!

Hype!
The development time make me a bit worried though...

lol wat more development time makes you worried why...
konami probably wanted it to laucnh in june but kojima wanted more polish. id say that last few months has just been insane qa and bug fixes...

I think s/he means ingame, creating platforms and so on.

Buying in-game currency with real money? I didn't think of that, but that wouldn't be so bad in the grand scheme of things. Pretty much the same thing GTA V and, like, all Ubisoft and EA games do, which is fairly unobtrusive and easily ignorable. I guess I just expect Konami to go with the worst possible thing, though :P

I suppose we won't know until the game's out, because I can't imagine they'll be eager to talk about their money-grubbing strategies any earlier.

This keeps looking like all the game I could ever need. I hope MGO3 can live up to everything shown so far. I want Snake vs Everyone mode back too.

I was extremely impressed by the vid.
So much value in this game by the looks.

September 1st will be the best week ever, Mad Max and MGSV.
I can't..*wipes tears*

I can't believe I'm saying it but this video actually makes me nervous for the game.

Knowing we have mincrotransactions, knowing the timers - I really hope it doesn't get fucked.

Yeah, the ingame one. I've seen that creating revolver takes around 18 minutes, and that probably a low level weapon

I never played Peace Walker but the whole Mother Base development is one the biggest appeals for me here. Strange how that happens. Need to get working on a tranq sniper rifle and test it on MB soldiers from across struts. If the game has a gimped range on those I'm gonna be so upset.

Straight-up not purchasing the game if that's the case. I sincerely hope it's not because that would be terrible.

So... am I the only one who doesn't find any appeal on Mother Base or Multiplayer? I just want a good stealth/spy game, not a mix of everything slapped together with dumb parachutes that can take a car to my base. Lol wtf. let's parachute everything to mother base! Sorry to say but Metal Gear has jumped the shark for me. Too bad PT got cancelled because at this point I think Kojima's talents would be better used in a horror game than this.

So if the invader fails, does that mean he is leaving empty handed or will he be keeping things he stole until he got caught.

He should keep the stolen items even if he fails IMO.

In the video he talks about how none of this needs to be played. If you want to have an offline single player experience, it will deliver one. You don't have to do any of this stuff if you don't want to.

You don't have to do any Forward Operating Base stuff, but Mother Base is non-optional. There's a JeuxVideo article where the writer (who had five days with the game) makes it clear that you're going to hit walls later in the game if you don't have the necessary R&D level to craft certain required things.

Ok that would be annoying. I think I'm gonna pass on this one. I just hope someday someone makes a great spy game again.

I thought that was to craft certain weapons and stuff and that it is unecessary for completion of the game.

I dont know guys I'm a fan of Metal Gear since Metal Gear Solid on PS1 and I have seen a lot of crazy things (and tech) in MGS and it all was a perfect match. It seemd crazy but I was able to accept it.

With MGS5 I just feel that everything is over the top. Everything Kojima does, he does it perfectly (even lil details) but when it comes to this I have my doubts. It just feels out of place, a lot of things. It just doesn't fit the time

Like I said before this Metal Gear doesn't feel like a MGS game, it has lost that feeling that MGS1, 2 and 3 had. It starts to remind me of Resident Evil where the series was completly changed and we got an Third Person Shoorter (5 and 6)

I still think this is Resident Evil 4 for the MGS universe but a lot of has changed and not for the best. Im hyped for it but nowhere near the level of hype like MGS 2,3 and 4 and that is sad because this is the last Metal Gear from mr. Kojima-San.

INB all the haters, this is my opinion

One of those build timers was upwards of 2 hours, thats getting into really bs territory.

That wasn't a build timer, it was an Outer Ops one. I could be wrong but all the build timers I've seen have only been between 18-35 minutes, which I imagine is about the length of one mission on the field.

Ye, but we don't know if doing missions reduces the time or if they are even final (most likely they are). Creating a new platform took 35min and in the demo they mention something about accelerating your development, but if that means time will be cut of just the fact that you can steal resources from others we don't know yet.

The YongYea video about the article talks about Mother Base development "becoming really important in later stages of the game due to special events that need to be dealt with". He also got stuck in certain missions because he hadn't unlocked the proper gear, due to underestimating how much the game expected him to be doing Mother Base stuff.

Man I totally agree with you. You're not alone. This feels like a completely different game.
