Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

Hope so. If there's a criticism I have of TW3 it'd be that in my hours in Velen so far I feel like apart from the cities in the distance there's no particular "landmark" that's grabbed me and thus it all ends up feeling very samey. Skellige I only just reached yesterday so I'll have to wait and see but it's quite pretty. For TPP...by virtue of being in part desert I can forgive some of the possible "faults" of Kabul/Afghanistan/Wherever it is. Although I obviously hope for some variety, as the idea of the Kabul mountains and a russian base etc is pretty damn exciting, or even the boss fight vs
Quiet
set among st Afghan ruins in a valley.

For the Africa setting...well apart from the jungles it has the climable rock walls and waterfalls etc...I guess at the end of the day I don't mind if the Afghan desert and the African jungles are just that but I hope they haven't been made "big" just to tick a box although the range of transportation and things to do means that it'd take me a while to get bored and resort to any fast travel method...

It'd be cool to sneak into a russian base in Afghanistan only for things to go tits up and erupt into a firefight and the noise attracts some guards who were on a road patrol or at a checkpoint down the valley etc.

Yeah – for one thing, deserts are vary varied and interesting places. They're not just 'sand'. This is especially true when you factor in human constructions. I'm certain (and we've seen evidence suggesting that) TPP will be interesting desert design (oases, shrubberies, mountains/cliffs, patches of forest, caves) mixed with great town/settlement design.

They have also confirmed that the guard/security layout is very dynamic. If you get spotted in an Afghan-Russian base and the guards attack you, they will radio to the nearest other bases and request back-up. The guards from other bases will dynamically come to the base/town you're at to hunt you down. Apparently you can even game this system. Plant C4 throughout the main base. Leave and travel to a smaller, secondary base. Set off all your C4, thus alarming the main base. Guards leave the secondary bases to defend the main base. You loot/explore the secondary bases while they're absent.

I gotta vibe the level design + emergent gameplay design + strategic/systems design is going to be mindblowing

I was watching the super cut of Peace Walker, and came up with a dumb fan theory. Having no good place to put it, I will dump it here. Feel free to ignore if you don't want to hear my crackpot theory.
Paz, or Pacifica Ocean is a clone of Eva. Les Enfants Terribles was a plan to clone all the patriots, not just Big Boss. I would assume there are other “ocean” clones, Atlantica? Eli could be one of the snakes, or maybe he is a clone of Zero?
Any how, that is the dumb idea I had when watching the recap of peace walker. Really though I don't think this is likely, but the game is two weeks away and I can not stop my brain from running wild. I want it so bad and I can not block it out to make time go faster...

I thought this myself. Especially when we see that screen of
Paz with long hair
in a recent trailer. I immediately thought,
'that could well be a clone of EVA, they're so similar. And that would mean original-Paz was also a clone of EVA. And that would add up, too – EVA was possibly the greatest spy in history, so cloning her would make perfect sense, similarly to how they cloned Big Boss to get the greatest soldier in history'.

Oh yes. Yesyesyes. The replay value seems through the roof. I'll tell you this much, there are going to be some truly astounding Youtube videos.

Cool announcement, too: it looks like I'm going to be building a pretty high-power gaming rig this week, my first in over 10 years. I need it to work on a game with an independent developer. And what card am I getting...? GeForce GTX 960. What comes free with that card...? MGSV: TPP.

Getting it early and getting a free PC copy... What a time to be alive.

Jeff loves MGS at it's most nonsensical, so 2 and 4 are his favorites, he does not care for 1 or 3.

This always baffled me. All the MGS games are crazy. His critique of MGS1 seems to be "It's barely a game" which is odd since MGS2 has even longer cutscenes. His critique of 3 is, the camera was bad (which got fixed) and that he thinks the past is dumb despite 1963 weapons being functionally very similar to the weapons you had in 2 and 4.

In regards to Metal Gear, Dan is the only sane person on the crew.

Those PSN UK prices. Jeez, I thought £41 was overpaying.
Yeah, it did leave a pretty huge gaping hole in my wallet. But like I said earlier, I've always considered the MGS games worth every penny. TPP will be no exception. I owe it to Kojima to buy this game and squeeze every second out of it. I grew up with MGS, I need to see how it ends.

So, anyone know the name of the super-soldier bad guy outfit in this one? Every MGS has one. FOXhound, Dead Cell, Cobra Unit, Beauty and the Beast Squad.......what is this iteration called?

Uh, no, I don't think you can do that. Missions lock you into an instance area surrounding the target base, from what we've seen. So if that is possible it would be within the sandbox provided.

I remains to be seen of a single mission encompasses multiple bases. What we do know is that sabotage carried out in the open world (like destruction of a radar dish or equipment depo) will impact the mission instances, but it seems like when you start a mission you are locked in like Ground Zeroes, and reinforcements are just enemies spawned to drive in if you let an alert get out and didn't distrupt communications.

XOF and
Skulls
are names I've heard.

Lol although I'm getting it on PS4 (mainly because that's where my friends will be playing it) I'm getting a new PC late Sept and plan on getting a 980Ti...so yeah. MGSV for all!

You can definitely do that – it was confirmed in the May/June press previews – but perhaps it's locked to Free Roam + side ops only, with respawned enemies for instanced main missions. This would make sense.

I'm a grown ass man and I giggle like a schoolgirl at the thought of getting my hands on TPP,

So, anyone know the name of the super-soldier bad guy outfit in this one? Every MGS has one. FOXhound, Dead Cell, Cobra Unit, Beauty and the Beast Squad.......what is this iteration called?

I think it's either
Those Who Do Not Exist... or XOF... or Parasite Squad/The Skulls
.

Are there any innocent towns in Phantom Pain?

I'm pretty sure in one of the early reveal videos (with that American guy voicing over) he said that you'll have to travel through non-combatant townships.

I think they'll be present, but in no way substantial. More likely to be huts/ a few individuals rather than whole towns.

Pics or GTFO, meat

[Edit: oh, I guess your avatar is it]

Also I think
Those Who Do Not Exist
are going to be tougher enemies, not a proper boss unit. I think the boss unit will be an XOF squad.

Even in the original release, the camera was the same as 2.

2 was slightly more suited to the camera it was designed around, plus you had the radar and the guards couldn't see as far.

The freely controllable camera was announced really early, like when they first showed off the game, so it was annoying to see it held back for the rerelease.

Even in the original release, the camera was the same as 2.

Yeah, but the two games weren't the same. It's not like the difference between MGS and MGS2, they were very different in gameplay terms. MGS2 has the same kind of Line of Sight, top-down gameplay the series has employed from the beginning, whereas MGS3 shakes that formula up considerably with much less grid-like and much wider level design and the potential to hide in plain-sight (so to speak). Very different beasts indeed.

Yep, the way they built the game means there is a ton of possibilities, pretty cool that they've essentially just built a bunch of systems that work together and we're just supposed to manipulate them to accomplish a goal. It's true open design within missions that most open world games don't actually have, and the variability in not only our approach but the responses from the AI is going to create some interesting scenarios when shit hits the fan.

Man, that says something though, doesn't it? Don't get me wrong, I love Dan, but the dude's slightly insane himself. So to have him be the only one on the Giant Bomb crew that loves Metal Gear doesn't exactly make me feel confident. haha.

God damn, that FOB invasion segment was better than any other game play I've seen for this game yet. That shit alone looks awesome enough to get this game.

The way I see it we're getting 4 games in one for the price of $60.

We get the open world stealth, story missions and side missions.

We get the whole Mother Base building and management meta game.

We get the FOBs and the invasions/defense.

And we get MGO.

Each one of these seem like substantial chunks that can offer hours of fun and gameplay.

In terms of sheer value there aren't many games you can say that offer this.

Hmm what could this mystery be? They wrapped it all up in MGS4 :)

Well, hopefully it'll clear up how Big Boss goes from vehemently opposing nations, especially the United States, while pursued by Zero/Cipher/Patriots, to working for the USA all over again.

looked in this thread to see why it was still on front page, find out its the unofficial MGS5 OT/hype thread right under the Mods' noses

pretty sneaky ya'll

I've been thinking about this very hard and I'm convinced that we'll finally see
what kind of gun Snake is packing down there, uncensored
.

It's the ultimate twist from Hideo Kojima.

Is it weird to assume it would have its own mini-bandana?
No, no it's not.

Two weeks, bitches. Two weeks 'til balloons on goats and Hall and Oates.

Reviews a week before release? That seems to me like Konami are pretty confident in the product. Does that not seem a little ironic considering the events of the past few months?

I think a lot of people at Konami are actually good people, only the suits at the very top are fucked up in the head. Just look at the retweets of cosplay and general hype.
The issue with Kojima productions was always a financial one, not a lack of confidence in their product. Hiring an auteur to spend five years and $80m isn't cheap. They probably knew the game was solid (lol?) when they shuttered the studio. If I had to take a guess, I'd say the past few months has been exclusively centered on wrapping up the MP, which would explain why it was never shown and delayed so close to the ship date. Kojimas active creative role in the project ended a long time ago. Konami trusts the game, just not the management.

That's life in the big city and cold hard business unfortunately.

Even in the original release, the camera was the same as 2.

The claustrophobic camera in 3 was at odds with the more open design and didn't fit well with the improved guard AI and vision radius. It was a fair criticism at the time and Kojimas explanation for it to journalists was flimsy to say the least.

I took 4 days off for this game. Might shut off my phone too.

Still can't wrap my head around how much stuff there is to do, and I'm sure they haven't showed us everything yet.

Even in the original release, the camera was the same as 2.
Yeah, but I can understand this gripe, areas in 3 are larger and have more complex geometry compared to the hallways and struts of 2. Also no solition makes it a bit tougher. Still 2 other versions of the game exist with a great camera.

Man, that says something though, doesn't it? Don't get me wrong, I love Dan, but the dude's slightly insane himself. So to have him be the only one on the Giant Bomb crew that loves Metal Gear doesn't exactly make me feel confident. haha.

I know, his comments on MH4 were a bit irksome. I have a friend that stopped listening to the bombcast because Dan hates Yakuza. Which is odd because I feel like tonally those games share the melodrama, bad assery, and humor of MGS.

But at least he likes all the MGS unlike Patrick, Jeff, and Brad who all for some reason thought really odd things about at least one of the games. Brad for some reason always mentions ghosts of the white house walls when talking about MGS2 and I have no idea if he literally thinks the patriots are supposed to be ghosts.

I can totally see why someone wouldn't like Metal Gear at all. Hell, plenty of my friends don't. The series really can be quite obtuse and nuanced in its design and play, and its presentation and narrative are distinctively flavorful. You'll either love it or hate it, in either case for a myriad of reasons. There's nothing like it, which is both a strength and a weakness.

I took that tuesday and Friday off work. I will work Wednesday and Thursday is half a day for me, then I get Friday off and monday since its Labor Day so four day weekend. I am ready. I plan to play non stop.
