Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

How does the inclusion of Mother Base qualify MGSV as basically PW2? PW had tiny areas, super structured and basically every gameplay element the series had established up until this point was watered down for the portable crowd.

MGSV is like the opposite of Peace Walker, regardless of the inclusion of Mother Base.

Mission-based progression structure that involves repeatable main story ops and optional side ops that can you can customise your loadout before every mission.

The core of the game's DNA is very much rooted in Peace Walker.

Most of the games have tiny areas. It's basically open world Peace Walker with revamped controls + mechanics.

- rather than one long mission (ala MGS1-3, and 4 to some extent) it has PW's structure of short missions you dip into and out of and can replay, based in variations of the same 2-3 locations (in this case those locations happen to be gigantic)
- fultoning enemies who are then converted to your army and added to Mother Base, Pokémon style (this is not present in any MG game except PW)
- unlocking new weapons, items and vehicles, and upgrading these, is mainly tied to management of Mother Base's R&D department (not present in any MG game except PW)
- micromanagement of Mother Base's various departments and staff with a meta-game of sending soldiers on missions to earn more money (not present in any MG game except PW)
- play as any soldier you have recruited in any game mission (as far as we know, may not be applicable to story missions (not present in any MG game except PW)
- building and expanding Mother Base with money you earn on mission, in the game world, and from good management of MB itself (not present in any MG game except PW)
- CQC has been updated to include PW's 'chaining' ability (not present in any MG game except PW, and MGS3D I guess)
- 'CODEC calls' restricted to a minimum, again just like PW

The actual on-ground gameplay will be more like MGS4 in an open world – so that is almost 100% different from Peace Walker. But the entire puppet-strings design behind that gameplay is 1:1 with Peace Walker, from how you choose missions, how you deploy missions, how you manage Mother Base and how you gain resources.

TL;DR: MGSV doesn't just have 'the inclusion of Mother Base'. Mother Base and the adjoining systems provide the game's entire structure, on a strategic level. The game is designed at a high level around Mother Base and how you manage it + its staff, which is a substantial portion of the game's content and is 1:1 with Peace Walker. The on-the-ground gameplay, yes, will be very different (specifically the huge open world, although we'll often be locked into small subsections of this for missions).

It's much much more than just the Mother Base inclusion, every thing from fulton recruitment, R&D determining your weapon loadouts, Extra Ops, Outer Ops, CQC is pretty much the same as Peace Walker, Tapes replace Codec calls, all signs also point towards being able to build your own Metal Gear once again, just like in pw.

I feel as if you've never played portable ops

He's not, at least not that anyone knows with any kind of certainty. It's just a joke.

well i guess i told it without even knowing... i only watched the cutscenes in GZs once.. and i skipped peace walker.. soo.. plus i doubt i would know what the fuck is going on anyway.. in these games i beat MGS 4 7 times and watched the cutscenes many times and still was like wtf at the ending...

Did they screw up and show a new arm in that? Never saw a yellow arm in any of the media.

Same as this one

My question is why the MSF patch on his arm?

Could someone slow down and translate? ;)

He calls Boss Grey Fox????

No nothing, just comedy.

I just asked the same question in the spoiler thread lol, I'm so disappointed.... I don't even know if I'm gonna buy the game.

i don't think the review is surprising, that was pretty much what every previews have mentioned, many people here had the same concerned about the game too, It will still be an amazing game for sure.

So isn't the boot camp the review event? And didn't it start just a couple of days ago? How can you play a couple of days of a supposedly humongous game and then review it? I may be mistakened though.

Maybe the "main quest" is a 15 hourish affair like the past MGS games? Any word on this yet?

That's what I'm hoping for. A solid 15-20 hour main quest and then a bazillion hours over 10 trillion square miles as post game stuff for folks who dig that.

This is what I thought too, they get their hands on an early copy or something?

You are thinking about the us review event. Maybe the europe one started earlier.

Can anyone give a translation to that review please?

A basic, Google-translated outline of the four main points is (spoilerised just in case anyone's on a total blackout, no actual spoilers):
- Loads of gameplay options, even if some aren't that useful
- Graphics are nice but show evidence of cross-gen development
- Great ambient music, incredible lineup of '80s music
- Game's 40+ hours long, might be a little too long

The last bit is something about how they were impressed but didn't understand the story, I think. It ends with 'Kojima's final mystery?'

are people treating 17/20 as bad?

god, hyperbolic review scores have ruined our sense of perspective

MGS is one of the most acclaimed franchises of all time, and MGSV is one of the most anticipated games of the year. If every review outlet gives it under a 9, then yes, that will be disappointing. The expectation is for more than a game that is simply good.
