Metal Gear Solid V - PC vs. PS4 screenshot comparison

Wow.

You do realise if the PS4 was a more powerful system then the PS4 and PC version would look identical. So culling features because of less powerful hardware makes the game better now does it?
I'm surprised some of you are taking the bait. Last sentence should have made it obvious.

I did. Unless you're a complete pixel nerd (I know, I know, we're on GAF), you can hardly see any meaningful difference.

Comparison isn't well made anyway, there's slightly more contrast on the PC pic to make it look better (PS4 pic look a bit washed out, like if they chose "limited" color range instead of "full", it doesn't look washed out when correctly calibrated).

For 99.9 % of people (including me), those pics look nearly identical. That's the magic of diminishing returns and it will only get worse.

If you want a fair comparison, you certainly won't find it on Nvidia website anyway...

Well he isn't blind when it comes to Xbox vs PS4 comparisons and likes to complain about DF Minimizing differences. But you decide.

Honestly the PS4 still actually looks better, I think. The PC one has way overblown lighting it looks like those shitty new Star Trek movies. All style for no reason, The PS4 version is more measured. The human eye can't focus that far in the distance anyway so all that crap getting circled is irrelevant and unrealistic.

Edit: Damn, looks like I got fooled.

To everyone who did their part.

Fuck yeah! Bought MGR day one and will buy this here on day one as well.

What the... Wow.

Buy some glasses man, there is nothing else to say.

Japanese developer touting SLI support in their PC game before release, while experienced western developers struggle to patch it in to their biggest games months after shipping? This is bizarro world. Good job, Kojima Productions. Fingers crossed that this release is a success.

This is like saying the X1 has more realistic foliage in GTA V. You know...because there's not as much grass in California as the PS4 has.

:p ;)

I'm disappointed to see that the textures and AA look bad in the first PC shot. I can do something about the AA, but not the ground textures (short of a mod that is).

...or is tetsuo trying to pull a Miles?..which the Mods were frowning upon

What would playing this at 4k on a 4k monitor bring to the table? Would the extra detail seriously be discernible. I don't get how it works. Is Kojima implementing 4k textures?

Tetsuo is a little too good at this.

Agreed, I need to get better at this.

I could swear some of those lights in the PC shots were in the PS3 version, such as the one on the guard shack at the crossroad.

Those lights are there in the PS3 version if I remember correcetly, but from that distance you weren't able to see. Once you got within a certain distance, or if you used the binoculars you could see those details.

Pretty neat extra effects plus increased LOD. PC version it is.

Oh, I see the thread has already devolved in PC-only GAFers overstating the differences and PS4-only GAFers handwaving them. Sigh.

Ok, I posted this as if the levels of exaggeration on both sides were equivalent, but then I read this

Looks exactly the same to me...

... but then I read this

The PS4 version is absolutely obliterated in those shots. Can't wait for this

Yeah, pretty much equivalent.

Most or all of that stuff already is in the PS4 version. The big difference here is in Level of Detail which means that certain graphics effects get lessened as the objects get farther away from the camera. The PC version here has a much less aggressive LoD so you'll get more detail from these shots at a distance.

Almost fell for it seeing just the avatarless quote

Sarcasm? There's like images that clearly point out the diffetence.

Point out as in with arrows? Because I don't see anything major like PC guys are pretending there is. The puddle reflection jumps out at you and the lighting looks a bit brighter, but that's it. I'm just being real.

That's certainly true for some PC owners here but I've got a gaming PC and enough money to buy hundreds of others, so for me it's not the problem.

It's just there must be a reason to upgrade other than one more pixel or another light source... Especially when the game already looks and plays fine on consoles. It's harder and harder to find those reasons. For the most part, games look more on more the same on every platform, as it should with more power and diminishing returns. Even mobile games will one day look the same actually...

On a psychological side, this kind of PC bragging threads always look like people trying to justify their buy (because unconsciously they know a light on a puddle hardly justifies such spending).

The pics look great, but come on, if you're gonna tout 4k, let's see some!

Although I assume the usual suspects will still deny that it looks better than the PS4. :P

Also, no 120fps is a shame, but it seems like a small price to pay for a well done job and Nvidia helping out.

You are sure that your ps4 is going to perform as well as a pc with a gpu that cost more than your ps4. Got it!

Are you serious?

So you are telling me that GZ is maxing out PS4 and PC? Serriously? A last gen asset game?!

So if I buy a high end PC, is it going to play say, Tetris better than PS4?

Dude... not all games are that demanding...

Obviously PC will always win the competition, there is no doubt about that, but this "comparison" is utterly stupid.

GZ was released for consoles almost a year ago.... A YEAR.

You think that all this time, there was no extra polishing on the engine? You honestly think that PS4 cant handle a bit better LOD than the horrendous one it had when it launched? That the same area on PS4 wont feature any improvements when you see it in TPP?

GZ is not next gen material to write home about. Also, what part of this is difficult for you to accept? http://www.vg247.com/2014/02/13/hid...can-render-1080p-at-60fps-with-room-to-spare/

But some people just want to grab something and start bloating about their uber master race, and some other console dudes just like to live in denial.

I cannot understand why the hell we just cant get along with some tiny bit of frigging logic.

In short, PC always wins, but that GZ comparison with PS4 is utter shit because 1 year of extra development separates the 2.

Do you seriously not see all the objects that are not visible or have lower detail on PS4 ? The LoD ? Pop-In ?

I really don't know when people are being serious or not.

Lighting is not brighter. You are seeing every light at one time instead of only being able to see some because of lod on the consoles.

You must be another astroturfing casual console fanboy warrior paid by Sony if you say that.

Look better, there's a small light on the background, you should certainly buy a $500 GTX980 like just right now I tell you.

Hey don't be mad because you're feeling insecure about your PS4 version now.

I'm not sure why we care that much about Digital Foundry when it has shown time and time again it had a MS bias. Minimizing differences is now their business, the same way they used to magnify every 2 fps advantage the Xbox 360 used to have over the PS3.

XB1 and PS4 share a very similar architecture but PS4 is around 30 % more powerful, so of course in every game it'll show by running better on PS4, unless you really try hard to make the XB1 version runs the same (mostly by downgrading the PS4 version on purpose).

As far as I know, a slightly better XB1 version happened exactly once, with AC : Unity. But it had nothing to do with CPU and everything with Ubi wanting to force parity.

Analyzing made more sense when we had different architectures. Now ? Not so much... Of course the most powerful machine will get a slightly better version than a less powerful machine with the same architecture.

I noticed environmental LOD and material/lighting changes instantly.

See how the rocks actually look wet and catch the light as if they are?

Notice the plant LOD?

Distant lighting and the environment actually being lit by it?

:-D Yeah, this release should be solid! This is Kojima Productions first PC release (MGS1, MGS2 were released pre-KJP - not to mention the MSX titles), so I think they want to make a splash! I want to give them my money so badly.

While that's obviously overblown for comedy purposes I do think the game would look better with some light depth of field in the distance.

Until games have eye-tracking, I don't want them implementing DoF in anything but cutscenes. ..and maybe the occasional effect like Alien Isolation's motion tracker where it's directly related to gameplay.

Honestly, if a difference remotely this huge in geometry and foliage LOD distance would occur between the PS4 and XB1 version of any game, people would call it "LODgate" and the thread would reach 200 pages in an hour.

Just to be clear, only a blind man couldn't see those differences. However, there will always be more posts in console "versus" threads, because that's where the majority of the people will play most of these games, and that's where the comparisons make more sense, since you're comparing two fixed platforms aimed at pretty much the same market. That's why those threads always end up becoming huge.

Just like how WiiU comparisons never really mattered much (since results were so predictable, and well, there's not actually that many big multiplatform games on the console), PC comparisons also won't draw that much attention, since again, the results are extremely predictable.
