Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

Anyone else having an issue with the texture?

It looks the same for me when using binoculars. Surely this can't be intentional?

Does anyone in here know if this game supports 21:9 resolutions? For example 2560x1080? Does the HUD adjust?

Edit: Thanks!

Has Konami or KojiPro commented on the absence of SSR in the PC build?

Not officially, but WSGF has modded it in. The HUD stays at 16:9.

A few posters in this thread have gone to show via screenshots that SSR is present. It's just tweaked to show up far less than in GZ

Has anybody tried to use the windows 10 game DVR? I've tried to record a few things but it never seems to actually record (got settings checked in app). It may be me doing something wrong because it's my first time trying it out

Game DVR works fine for me. You can't share clips on XBL however unless its a windows store game, which I find extremely lame.

Nvidia control panel settings just won't work in-game, I've even removed previous drivers and completed a fresh install of the latest one. :(

I have a brand new 970 and am new to Nvidia so does anyone know if I should just be clicking optimise on that geforce experience thing? It looks like it up the resolution to some crazy number.

The FPS seems to be stable enough for me (not a solid 60 but never below 50).

If anything would be limiting me it's my terrible AMD 955 CPU anyway

Yea, I just looked and it wants to optimize it to all maximum with a slight supersample through Dynamic Super Resolution. That's probably fine (maybe revert back to your native resolution) but I would:

Optimize through Geforce Experience, run the game, revert back to your native monitor resolution, set borderless window, disable Ambient Occlusion in-game, close the game and force HBAO+ through the nvidia control panel.

Can anyone advise if my machine would run this - just looking for 1080p on high would be nice but suspect I won't get anywhere near it!

Still waiting for new mod tools.

You da real MVP. Hit us with links right into veins when able to make mod, will be appreciated. I have gotten used to playing with DS4 while having Xbox controller prompts, but it still can throw me for a loop when seeing e.g. B :D

Any way to get rid of FXAA yet?

Set post process to low.

Holy shit dude a gtx 970 with a phenom II?
Even my ancient hd6870 (970 is 3 times faster) was being held back SO much by my old phenom II...

Swapping to an i5 made that 6870 feel like a whole new gpu, I can't even imagine how much your cpu is bottlenecking your 970... Get a new cpu man (and not amd shit:p)
If I had to choose between having to use my phenom II + this gtx 970 or going back to my hd6870 but getting to use this i5 I would choose the hd6870+i5 in a heartbeat.

High or with some Very probably. Which 7900 series card is that? The 7970?

My 7970m plays beautifully at 720p with max settings. I would imagine a desktop 7 series would have no trouble at all running at 1080, If you are willing to dial down a couple of options a touch.

ahh ok, any word on when they'll be up?

A day or two (paraphrasing). Hopefully less though.

Will do. I still haven't gotten used to the controls. Always trying to run with the horse using X instead of square.

Also, LB in scope mode is messed up for me. Anyone else?

Had frequent dips into 40s on base areas when running most of everything on Extra High, but bringing most of them down to High yields a consistent 60FPS and the game still looks gorgeous. I can probably bump up some options to Extra, not sure which ones but I'll try and experiment. Any suggestions on what is affordable for running at Extra High?

So I take it this is a good port?

Very well optimized but still not super good. Bringing up the controls menu with kb+m shows a big controller, icons for a lot of things are controller buttons (analog sticks, dpad), menus are not usable with the mouse (WASD and space/esc to navigate), bad audio options, no toggle option for aiming. Last one is just something I'd much prefer and not really a negative for the port.

Despite all this the game of course performs very well and it plays really well, there is no mouse acceleration junk going on. Just relatively minor annoyances.

Edit: oh one thing that is weird, maybe it's just me, but I can't alt-tab in borderless window mode. I see the start bar and the alt tab tiles but the game acts like it's set to always on top. Can't open taskmanager or anything, have to change it to windowed mode temporarily to alt-tab.

I would say it is pretty great on a technical level.

Kojima doesn't want you touching his levels, yo.

That's what I was thinking, but at least a master volume slider would have been nice. Playing with headphones that don't have volume controls is a pain. (Yes, alt-tab, still a pain)

Yeah this didn't work for me either so I switched over to Fullscreen. I don't think I get any advantages out of Borderless.

All max settings at 1080p except AO which is forced HBAO+ through NV control panel.

Really not much to say here. Locked 60fps all the way except one dip to 59 in-game and one to 44 during a cut scene! First 2 chapters completed, will update if this changes in any radical way. I usually monitor everything but haven't bothered here as everything is so unquestionably smooth.

Just need an unlock for the framerate and this will be about as perfect as it gets. Can't say the same for the regular server disconnects though.

EVGA 980 stock latest driver

W10 Pro

Running at 1440p with all settings maxed, AO via the NVCP and the game runs damn near perfect. It has had a few very random slowdowns during cut scenes. Nothing major or nothing that has affected game play. Played about 30 minutes in Afghanistan and it holds up well at 60 so far. May be the best port I've played in a very long time.

So I take it this is a good port?

As far as performance, yes. But otherwise they could've done much better.
  • No separate settings for antialiasing
  • Gamepad does not work simultaneously with keyboard/mouse (problem for Steam controller)
  • Menus don't support mouse
  • Menus are designed completely to work with a controller
  • Some button help prompts still show controller icons
  • No volume controls
  • HDAO has to be enabled via Nvidia control panel
  • Borderless window mode is always on top so alt+tab is useless

HBAO is grayed out in my nvidia control panel... do I need to update to the latest drivers? I have the previous ones installed.

Looking at the (noobs?) comments on the nvidia dl page, I don't want to screw my windows 10

You need latest NV drivers in order to be able to use HBAO+ in MGSV. I'm running W10 with latest drivers, zero issues over past few days.

Currently playing this on my HTPC, my main rig is doing work / encoding stuffs.

Game is maxed and forced HBAO+ through nvidia control panel. Solid 60 fps in gameplay, some 1-2 frame dips in cut scenes.

All in all, I'm extremely impressed with the optimization with this game. Going out with a bang.

I haven't installed GeForce Experience in awhile since it seemed to really eat up ram. Is it better optimised and is worth using?

In the prologue at one point the frame went down to 11 frames for about 5 seconds and some cutscenes sometimes go down to 40ish

TB mentions in his Port Report that game was bugging out on him early on and gave prompts for keyboard, Xbox controller and PS controller. DS3/4 prompt icons are in game files, but just not used when plugging in DS3/4? :o

Shadow quality has a larger performance impact than Nvidia's guide suggests. Went from drops to 48fps to mostly solid 60 in the area where Miller's being held at night by dropping shadows from extra high to high. Specs are 770 2GB, i7 4770K, 16GB ram and Win 7. Other settings are 1080p, and everything maxed out except SSAO, effects and model detail (those three along with shadows set to high). Get some drops in the larger areas, more frequently at night time, but runs great otherwise.

Can't say that I've experienced that at all. Will have to listen to that to see the extent of the issues he noticed.

the way he said it has me in doubt it actually happened...
