Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I want to get this on PC but after seeing how Batman AK turned out, I'm kinda scared we'll get a shit port. What are the chances of that happening? :/

This was actually made by Kojima's team. Not by some piece of shit port dev that can't get anything right. GZ is a damn good port.

Holy fucking shit what?! This deserves its own thread if true. That said we still don't have concrete details. This is shady as hell what konami is doing.

And on another note it really sucks that people are reviewing the game without really getting into such a cool feature of the game. But if they lock it away with money then screw konami.

All the review cited shortcomings I've read are what I expected given it being an enhanced PW game design. And I'm cool with it. The one thing in the GT review that stuck with me is when they stated this game feels more like a start of something new, not the final swan song. And that kind of stings as I'm sure Kojima had things lined up but it'll never happen now

Well I think he was going to pull the trigger if big boss didn't come along but it's hard for him. I never saw that scene as him saying screw everyone I rather unleash a virus than kill myself, he just wasn't ready to do it just then. Killing yourself should not be easy for anyone. But big boss came, in my opinion totally messed up the story, and basically told snake you are good, no virus you can live for the time you have left. Why would anyone kill themselves after that?

Am I the only one who thinks what we got was much more interesting than the hero sacrificing himself? While the info dumb is insane, there are quite a few moments of brilliance within that extended ending.

Oh no, of course. It doesn't make sense to pull the trigger after Big Boss comes along and explains everything is fine. (This entire situation also being incredibly stupid when you realise how this scenario plays out and how Naomi (?) leaves Snake to potentially kill himself). But I feel it's incredibly unsatisfying not to give a logical payoff if you put a character in a certain position where you expect him to act in a certain manner based on a long history, and his own development. That feels like a cop out for me.

It is what it is though. It's not like it matters now.

In The Phantom Pain, players use various resources acquired within the game to facilitate the construction of an off-shore base, but in order to participate in the online multiplayer mode, where players attack each other's bases, they must first use real-world money to purchase MB Coins. MB Coins are then used to purchase open water in the game to make space for a PVP-dedicated base. This was discovered during GameSpot's review process for The Phantom Pain, but without online functionality, we couldn't determine the cost of MB Coins, or fully evaluate F.O.B. mode.
The fuck is this? There's no way in hell that's true.

This can't be right. I can see them giving the option to purchase MB points but there MUST be a way to earn them in game

Has a retail game ever had an online mode that entirely relies on you spending real money to access it?
IIrc During the dark ages of online passes you had the option of purchasing the online pass if you bought a used copy.

I had no doubt this game would review (and be) amazing. Wonder if it'll stay around the mid 90's or fall a bit, either way I don't care, I'm playing the hell out of it.

The new mgo sounds cool. Hope I get a chance to give it a try.

The original (mgs 3) mgo was the first online console game I played. I had a lot of fun with that unusual game.

Whoa. That's pretty threadworthy if true.

Right, if true. But the article is just guessing that's how it works, Konami didn't give them any info and they're just assuming the worst.

The title of the article is "Locked Behind a Paywall" but it says that they didn't have online to support that claim.

So it wasn't even article-worthy, but it sure got them clicks, the scumbags.

There's no way they don't think that the backlash won't be heavy if it does turn out to be true.

Konami didn't care about the backlash over Kojimas letting go. I don't think they'd care about this, but this is also something that wouldn't be implemented last second as a fuck you to fans, which leads me to my next point..

Yeah, we don't know. Maybe once online is active they'll be earned through your Motherbase? Like you'll build them up slowly in real time, or you can pay to speed it up I assume. We knew there would be microtransactions, we just don't know how.

They said we can do everything in the game without having to use micro-transactions and it was only to speed things up right?

That has to be BS, because if MB is suppose to buy open waters for struts, how else are you expected to buy multiples of all the struts.

Maybe it is suppose to speed up time to get open waters?

It doesn't seem right.

It seems like there in fact is a way to get MB coins through single player missions according to a tweet in the thread about the paywall.

The last game that GameSpot gave a 10 was Bayonetta 2, right?

Witcher 3 and Journey HD? I think? before that idk, but they've only given ten 10's. So I mean..people are saying they're giving them alot, but ten 10's after 18 years or so after thousands of games is like a very low percentage.

Is there a detailed writeup of the differences between the PS3 and PS4 versions? I know it's 30fps vs 60fps, but is it otherwise rock solid? And is the draw distance fine in the PS3 version?

I full expect this to be an amazing experience so I just want to make sure the PS3 version is going to be up to snuff in every way. Otherwise I'd hold off till I get a PS4 or new PC.

If I'm not mistaken TLoU a 9, so yeah, they don't throw 10's here and there just for a laugh I guess.

Ok, I have never played a Metal Gear. I really want this game from the reviews. Is this game worth playing as a solo entry? If not, how would I get the other games if I only have PC and a PS4?

Really happy to see that it has good reviews.

But I've already read too much in this thread. I have to spend this last week in total isolation.
