Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Ok, I have never played a Metal Gear. I really want this game from the reviews. Is this game worth playing as a solo entry? If not, how would I get the other games if I only have PC and a PS4?
From the one review I've seen no, the game is not very friendly to beginners.

Between a PC & PS4 you can only get MGS2 and MGS Ground Zeroes ( I think Metal Gear 1 & 2 too?)

You'll need a PS3 for the whole series, all the main line games are there.

Witcher 3 and Journey HD? I think? before that idk, but they've only given ten 10's. So I mean..people are saying they're giving them alot, but ten 10's after 18 years or so after thousands of games is like a very low percentage.

here's an interesting fact. if they didn't knock off .4 points, which is ridiculous in MGS2's case, Metal Gear Solid games would be three of those 10/10 scores.

YOUUU SEEEM KIND OF PHONEEEEEEEEEY. EVERYTHING'S A LIIIIIIEEEEEEE
way to fuck it up

Just read the story. Or watch that 20min metal gear vid.

Other MGS games are in older consoles. And MGS4 is ps3 exclusive.

Having to use MB points to (allegedly) access the PVP is really fucking stupid.

Everything else seems great. Can't wait to play.

The less emphasis on story worries me a bit, but if there is a nice balance between cutscenes and gameplay then I will be fine. I am worried about how difficult to get the true ending will be though.

Should I be bummed about having to play MGSV on PS3? I know about the lower frame rate and resolution but I'm worried I'll be getting less features or worse: a broken version of an otherwise great game.

Reassure me, GAF. I'm half panicking and too broke to buy a PS4 right now (and waiting isn't an option because spoilers).

Nope. If it's anything like GZ (which I'm sure it will be), it'll still be awesome, as well as technically impressive for the hardware.

I believe the last gen versions have full feature parity with current gen and PC. Also, GZ was fine on PS3, so I'd assume TPP will be too. I think you'll be find playing it on PS3, as long as you're fine with lower res/framerate and a bit of aliasing.

Play it on PC? I think that Ground Zeroes runs very well on lower spec machines at full 60 fps, that's another option if you don't mind downgraded graphics(if your PC isn't that strong)

Its looks the same as the ps4 version only with worse graphics.

As someone who has played every MGS game to completion, no. It wasn't the frequency or even the length of cutscence that have been MGS's problem. It was that the writing was only ever average at its best, impenetrable, overwrought nonsense at its worst.

MGS4 was a brilliant game, wrapped around the worst film ever made. Less of an attempt to be a (bad) film director and more focus on being an (excellent) game director is a good thing.

Holy shit this is brilliant

Never realized just how truly stupidly long MGS4's cutscenes were

Luckily for you, it's rather early in the series.

This will get you started.

That video details the important parts of Big Boss's career pre-MGSV. Encompassing MGS3 and Peace Walker, as well as Ground Zeroes. I suggest, after beating The Phantom Pain, you look towards playing the rest of the series, in chronological order, as it will only get better and better, if you like the crazy, over the top story. If not, then you'll at least get a FANTASTIC game.

Less emphasis on story will either be great or awful...depending how good the story is. If it is like 1 and 3 it will be unfortunate. If it is on par with 2 and 4(both very bad IMO) the less story the better.

So just like me then. I played GZ on PS3 and it's fucking awesome. This game will have everything that the current gen and PC has but with 30FPS and 720p. So don't worry, everyone is getting the same game regardless of the machine you're using to play it.

I'm fine with that as long as everything else is in parity. Lesser features, dumber AI or fewer enemies on screen would be heartbreaking for me.

And no PC is not an option for me. There's no way I'd try to run this huge game in my rig.

I'd recommend reading the specs before saying that, I thought the same for Ground Zeroes and that game works excellent.

.

The game is very very very well optimized on PC. Both the team and the engine are genius. IT's a shame TPP will be the last game to really use it..

I'm actually disappointed by the reported lack of story, and scant cutscenes. These games for me always felt like throwbacks to the great action B-Movies of the 80's... as though they were viewed through a telescope from Japan by Hideo Kojima.

I'm sure what's there is great... but it's not the Metal Gear Solid that I've enjoyed. As convoluted and nonsensical as the plots could be at times, the story is why I played the previous entries. I'm holding on to my Steam pre-order, and I still want to play it... I'm just not as excited as I was for the next week to drop off the calendar.

Let's give the game a few days before we decide to agree with those of varying experiences...

The good reviews are not helping my hype.

I saw a MGSV poster (with Big Boss and the V fingers) whilst walking past a bus today, and I involuntarily made a noise somewhere between an 'ah-ha' and an 'argh'! My fellow pedestrians thought I was a bit odd.

In all fairness, we normally only get Assassin's Creed posters on buses here (maybe had a GTAV one), so it was quite exciting to see some MGS. Stupid sexy Big Boss.

Um... yeah. I can't, or won't speak for others. I can only express my memories of Metal Gear, and what I've enjoyed most in the series. And I'm sorry, but again, for me, it's not resource management at Mother Base with silent Kiefer Sutherland and an open world.

The game is out in literally a week, the lack of commercials is astounding.

Sydney? I saw the exact same poster on a bus and I also made the involuntary gasp/giddy noise.

And when Peace Walker was coming out, it wasn't with Fultoning new recruits, or building your own metal gear, or managing an army.

And when MGS 4 was coming out, it wasn't with Old Snake and Cyborg Raiden and Drebin clones selling you weapons and upgrades.

And when MGS 3 was coming out, it wasn't with Stamina management, hunting, and Camo index.

And when MGS 2 was coming out, it wasn't with first person shooting, ledge hanging, or even Raiden.

And when Metal Gear Solid came out it wasn't with polygons and voice acting, or corner views, or grappling and choking.

Every mainline Metal Gear game changes. That's what it's all about. If you want more of the same, then you already have it.

I don't want to read any of the reviews because of spoilers, but what's the general consensus on how friendly the game is to franchise newcomers? I've only played Ground Zeroes, so I don't know much about the series' plot.
