Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Wow, Greg is a shameless self promoter? It's almost like he makes his fucking living on Youtube and that's the name of the game. His rent is paid from ad revenue when people watch, like and subscribe or donate to his patreon. He needs to plug that shit as much as possible.

I accidentally spoiled the big twist for myself and honestly now I'm considerably less excited to play this.

As an XB1 owner it's so incredibly frustrating not to be able to play the series up to this point.

With backwards compatibility you should be able to pick up the HD Collection.

Whatever, I give up. You guys make sure you enjoy Kinda Funny's Two-Week Early Exclusive MGSV Let's Play, brought to you by Konami and Greg Miller.

Right, that's like saying businesses in general are shameless self promoters for marketing lol

It's about ethics in game journalism.

lololol

That might change soon with Emulation. You could potentially get MG1 MG2 MGS2 MGS3 and Peace Walker.

It's the same for me on PC, however I can emulate all the games but MGS4 perfectly..so it's nothing really.

(and for me MGS4 is best left forgotten, long live MGS2 :salute:)

Here's a thought.....

The reason why big boss is quiet in MGS5 is because he is saving up his energy for that long speech at the end of MGS4 that he will eventually end up giving.

Anyone here a fan of portable ops? I am watching the walkthrough of that game again, after years from watching it the first time...seems like a great entry in the series...I like the art-style used in the cut-scenes, (which subsquently got used in PW) as well as the moody background music to it all...very atmospheric..never played the game as I never brought a PSP, but I am enjoying watching it all again!!

Good reminder of the original Big Boss...David Hayter..

Sure will, it's very relaxing to watch let's plays after a long, hard day full of caring about real fucking problems.
I prefer to play video games myself instead of watching others play but whatever floats your boat.

And seeing reviews loving it but saying it is sparse on story makes me concerned...

Curious if there is anyone else that feels this way?

(also people saying, "I played 40 hours and I'm not even half way done!" is not attractive to me. It just shows that there is just way too much fluff to me... maybe I'm just too old for open-world games now)

Yeah I feel the same. In fact the intro is the part I'm most excited about right now..

But that's me and my ever narrowing interest for the gaming side of games. Eh, I know.

Everything about MGSV's gameplay sounds excellent, tbh, but my problem is I am always so eager to see what "happens next" in games (in terms of story/locations/set pieces) and MGS especially, I know I'm just going to rush through missions with poor marks to trigger the next cutscene/advancement. Add stealth in wide open environments being a little too dispersive for me, requiring extra patience and slow approach and I can see the game between plot reveals becoming a bit of a chore for me.
Or maybe not.

I loved Portable Ops, but it was also my first MGS game, so I'm sure that colored it. I put like 100 hours into it.

It'll always be canon to me :(

Jesus, skimming over the past two pages, what happened in this thread?

Someone is angry that reviewers aren't robots and are actually fans of games sometimes , apparently.

Either way I think the worst is over.

I wonder if sites will bother updating reviews with the FOB and MGO stuff when it goes live?

I prefer to play video games myself instead of watching others play but whatever floats your boat.

If the game was out I would but the Let's Play videos will be a nice tideover until I can play it myself

Since they don't have any real spoilers, and given the open ended nature of the missions I actually think it will be cool seeing how Greg's approach differs to mine once I actually go through it

I expect there's tons of different ways to complete these

German magazine 4players.de don't have a final score yet but based on what they played so far (main campaign) they would give it 78-80 out of 100. They call it a disappointment on a high level and say it lacks in the story department and has some huge issues with how the story is told. Minor spoiler about the game world:
They also criticize the lack of variety when it comes to the settings of the 2 main areas of the game

Edit: MGS4 is one of the highest rated games on their site.

Edit2: the review has some spoilers just so you know. Nothing major though I think.

Edit3: forgot to link it : http://www.4players.de/4players.php...87/0/Metal_Gear_Solid_5_The_Phantom_Pain.html

Do we have any idea on the length of just the main campaign?

I have little interest in side quests and lots to play.

The only number I heard was Greg Miller saying 30 hours to main credits. But I don't know if he only focused on story missions or he was doing side stuff in there as well. We also know there is story content post credits so if you include that as the campaign there's no telling how long.

I'd say 25-35 hours is a good ballpark if you are focusing on the campaign only

Excuse you guys?

MGS4 was fantastic and deserving of all the praise it got. Probably the best game in the series, or at least tied with MGS2 as the best.

Didn't MGS4, if I recall correctly, win GOTY in the neogaf dot com voting TWO separate years?

Mhmmm.

I refuse to let people rewrite history and forget how amazing MGS4 is.

I think he said he kept wondering off, so that may be a bit high.

25-35 sounds OK, I'll probably be a bit faster as I tend to go through pretty quickly. I didn't want a stupidly long game as that's part of what put me off of TW3 - along with the fact you can't really just stick to the main quest due to levelling.

Why are people so super concerned with spoilers anyway? I don't quite get it. Even if you know everything it just means you can enjoy all the foreshadowing that will undoubtedly feature in the game, not to mention it will have no impact on the actual gameplay which is what is garnering these 10/10 reviews left and right.

No one is calling this game a masterpiece due to the story, it's all about the gameplay. This may or may not have been the case for earlier entries in the series, but I honestly think people are way too worried in this case. Just enjoy the game. Or don't, I guess.

Because knowing things can absolutely impact your experience especially in a series known for its... interesting stories. Just saying it's not rocket science why some prefer to not be spoiled.

Or I could, you know, enjoy the game without being unnecessarily spoiled beforehand. It's a choice - if you want to indulge in spoilers then there is a thread just for that. This isn't the thread for spoiler discussion.

I'll never understand how someone can like MGS2 and MGS4 as much as one another. They're basically the antithesis of one another.

How so?

I like them both. Probably MGS4 a little more due to the variety of environments and gameplay mechanics, but almost at the same level.

I'm of two minds on this discussion. On the one hand, I do think that the so-called "spoiler culture" has grown increasingly silly over time. But on the other, I do think it behooves us to be respectful of others and to try to be conscientious of the desire of some to go in knowing as little as possible, preferring to be surprised.

What I generally encourage is for people on both sides to be as courteous as possible. And if you've played/seen something, that means knowing that you should err on the side of being as vague as possible. And if you haven't, one thing I'd like to see more of is giving some benefit of the doubt in terms of assuming that maybe a particular revelation isn't as important as it sounds. And what I mean by that is that despite people claiming desire to go in blind, nobody actually goes in blind. I mean, everyone has seen trailers or watched demo footage or looked at screenshots or read previews to have an idea of what this game's about. It's not like you're going to read a review talking about how the early game contains a great stealth section, and your response will be "there's stealth gameplay sections!? Thanks for the spoilers asshole!"

Therefore, knowing some details is obviously something that's okay. There's no hard and fast rules that determine what's a spoiler and what isn't, as there's always going to be some subjectivity in terms of what one wants to know about a game going in and what they want to be a surprise. But as I said, I think some act like the burden is entirely on the person who has experienced the work in question to be courteous, whereas I would argue that both parties should try to be conscientious of each other's intent. If I've played it, I shouldn't spoil important plot points like an asshole. But on the flipside, just because I'm revealing something you didn't know, perhaps you should give me the benefit of the doubt and assume that what I'm spoiling may not necessarily be an important surprise and instead just be an important detail in telling of my experience with the title.
