Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Tbh I feel you were trying to moan about Greg, hoping people to join in and all have some sort of circle jerk. Now that's not worked out you have to post things like "how precious" grow up dude, Gregs not done anything wrong.

Yeah, I used to hate on Greg for no reason, but he's a pretty good reviewer who is obviously passionate about his industry. Not sure why folks give him so much shit.

People seem so horribly torn on this. 'I hated mgs4 but I want to like this'.

I'll help you. If you liked the mechanics of ground zeroes and want a much bigger version of that crossed with peace walker then get this. If not, don't because it's still metal gear and if you don't like them by now then you probably never will.

Pretty much.

Top of the page, how embarrassing lol.

Just watched Greg's review and I wasn't spoiled one iota.

Circle jerk in a review thread? Nah, none of that in here, Venom Fox.

I never liked 4players anyway, everyone else giving it good reviews and them giving it 78-80%. Trying to garner attention by being the odd one out. Not a single review I've read has said its all recycling content lol.

Nope. They always align with my personal tastes and give arguments for everything they write. A lot of games get good reviews over there (Bloodborne and Witcher 3 are both 90%) but they don't give into hype that easily when I look at certain reviews (Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect 3,...).

MGS5 Pros and Cons - 4Players. It's german but as you see they give more arguments for scores than your typical 10/10 review.

Gawd caring about things is so uncool. GAWD.

OT: I can't believe there's only a week left, I'm super hyped. Shame it doesn't come out on the 31st since it's a bank holiday!

From Telegraph's review

As Venom Snake, however, this story is mostly background noise as you get down to the nitty gritty of kidnapping tranquilized sheep with your special forces kidnap balloon while Spandau Ballet plays on nearby radio.

lolol

From what I read there is actually an explanation but it is a very "metal gear-y" one, which makes me happy.

Well, I found a post in the spoiler thread:

Quiet spoiler from Burns review

So far the explanation for Quiet's lack of clothes is laughable (it involves, of course, photosynthesis – she can't 'breathe' with clothes on) and cheapens the story, as do the frequent butt shots of her and other women, including a member of a Borg-like undead sniper team. Then there's the mystical tribal leader with magical powers...it's crap, and barring some stunning late-game about-face should have been excised or changed long before it got into the final game.

#teamnotashamed

#teamnotashamed indeed.

Still, gonna play the shit out of this after I finish my other games. Will be my first MG in a looong time.

and then the rest of the quote says that her actual story is great and that the clothing just takes away from it.

edit: nvm you quoted it now :3

Yeah I like Greg, he's a good guy.

Why did you put my name in italics? Also I said some sort of circle jerk. Anyway it doesn't matter, nobody agreed with you, you lost, so go and moan elsewhere instead of shitting up this thread.

Disregard my post please, I got the outlet mixed up. lol, yeah they are pretty good with their reviews.

A next-gen version of Peace Walker with better graphics and controls sounds fantastic. I am not worried about the toned down story after MGS4. I don't mind games with long cutscenes, but that was overboard and cringeworthy sometimes.

Taking two days off from work next week to focus on the game. It is going to be a long week trying to avoid stuff online about the game. The temptation to watch videos is very strong.

What I don't get is, what was the point in hiring Kiefer for this game, as it's likely it is his first and last MGS game he'll provide a voice-over for. Why not stick with continuity and remain with David Hayter?

Its not as if a new era has begun with Kiefer on the vocals. When this is being widely regarded as the last true MGS game, with Kojima's involvement, the next one in the franchise would be a hark back to the days of Metal Gear 2, ie no input from Hideo at all...

Kojima thought kiefer would be better

Pretty sure Kojima wasn't planning on this being the last Metal Gear when he hired Kiefer.

It would have been perfect for a Metal Gear/Metal Gear 2 remake.

Guess I just bailed in time. Got about 15 minutes in and shut it off entirely for different reasons. Greg seems like a personable guy who knows how to handle himself on camera, but goddamn that video was hard for me to sit through. The constant self promotion and scattered aimless rambling wore me out fast.

All I really know is that Greg played 54 hours in 6 days at the event(someone count how many times it was stated in the first 15 pls!), and I feel violated for the amount of winks and nods about kinda funny's YT channel he kept throwing at me. He kind of occasionally spit out a few impressions and thoughts on the game, but a bit more prep would have been appreciated. I couldn't bother to watch the second half.

Same, guy came off like an insufferable, rambling fanboy. Is this what gaming journalism has slumped to? Yikes.

That's not really what I got out of it personally. He does indeed ramble, but he has a lot to say and feels strongly about what he's saying. I'd rather have that than something robotic and soulless but that could just be me. I feel like overall it prepared me for what to expect, a game with a good enough story just without the big wow moments of the previous games but instead a great, fun game to actually play and get lost in.

Wtf people

Fuck off with that quiet stuff. I dont want to know what someone said in the spoiler thread. If i wanted shit spoiled id go in that thread.

Lost? More like outnumbered by people with MGS avatars, which I expected. I made the mistake of trying to talk about about a reviewer doing something I think is tacky in a review thread about the game in question. But you're right, this is apparently not the right place for that. Ask yourself, if this wasn't Greg, and this wasn't MGSV, would you feel the same way you do now?

Greg's a funny, interesting guy, but I dare anybody to not see him as a slimy, shameless self-promoter in his stuff. Now he's the only one taking pictures of himself at Konami's review event, and then again gripping the game in his hands like some fanboy on Konami's twitter. It's ridiculous.

well ebay users are selling nvidia steam codes for $35-40
Don't risk ebay. People claim to be legit but they aren't always.
I paid for Bioshock Infinite code on ebay a few years back and it was removed from my steam account months later with no reason given by Valve and the seller conveniently ignores me.

It's from a review linked in this thread. Steve Burns' review to be exact, so be sure to steer clear of it.

He is a fanboy. That's the point. I don't know why he's supposed to pretend he isn't

Based on what I read of his while he was at IGN, he's not a good writer. Or maybe he is, and he was writing down to a lowest common denominator audience.

Anyhow, I like him as a personality and think he is in a much better place as a podcast host / youtube personality.

A. Slimy? Come on.
B. Go read wikipedia. The rest of us want journalists who are honest about who they are and are passionately opinionated.

Yeah I think he's said he doesn't actually enjoy writing reviews. I agree he's not a solid writer but he is a great speaker.

To add to the post above, slimy is the last word I would use to describe Greg. Yes he promotes his business that puts food on his table, shocking I know. He's also incredibly humble and down to earth based on every person I know who has met him.

Either way this isn't even about MGSV anymore.

So what's the general opinion on Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss?

He definitely got better voice direction than Hayter did. At least from what i've seen so far, not very talkative tho.
