Impossible.

Those videos are amazing.

While a military could likely intercept a meteor in the atmosphere provided advanced warning and tracking, I don't see what the point would be. At best, a missile would just break it up into a billion bits that would rain down destruction across a much larger area. More likely the missile would do nothing, depending on the makeup of the meteor. Too much uncertainty for it to be a viable option.

I seriously can't even believe we're talking about it like this. I'm almost positive intercepting it with a missile would be like trying to shoot down a falcon with a goldfish. I mean we're talking orders of magnitude higher speeds than our fastest missile, into an object whose composition is a crapshoot. Is it metal? Mostly ice? The thing is probably going 28,000 mph. It's just incredible that this thing was big enough to rain large enough chunks down to destroy (at least one) building(s?) after I presume starting to break up and disintegrate during entry. I thought we tracked objects this large with the sky survey system. I'm not scared, but I'm scared.

I'd rather we leave these small meteorites alone. Chances are the military would do more damage than good...

This is so cool, I'm glad I was awake to hear about it as it happened.

The meteorite that caused the KT extinction event was the size of Manhattan. If I saw that Russian meteorite fall in person, the scary part would be not knowing how big that meteorite was that was falling... and then having to wait.

The collapsed roof was from the shock wave when the meteorite smashed into the atmosphere not from any physical chunks hitting it.

The smoke trail is evidence enough that it broke up in the atmosphere, I would think. Plus the bright flash before the trail ends.

I have no doubt it broke up in the atmosphere (you can clearly see it split into two smoke trails when it becomes super bright) - I just wanted to know if any piece of it actually hit the ground. Probably too early to know.

Wow...I saw something that looked like a fireball in the sky in Houston earlier today (around 6pm). Was traveling slowly toward the horizon...I really hope this doesnt escalate before Friday is over.

Maan this is incredible, I cannot believe those videos, as much as we are desensitized to these type of scenes (FX) in films, those videos are still quite the spectacle.

just seeing that speed, that velocity, it's pretty damn scary, no time to react what so ever.

So what happened exactly? Did the whole thing just disintegrate before it even got close to the ground?

Can you elaborate? I am working late today and went outside, couldn't stop looking up. I know I am just being paranoid but... entertain us?

Well it wasnt as crazy as the Russia youtube clip posted earlier, but it just looked like a large ball of light traveling slowly across the horizon, about the same orange color as the sun at sunset. Had a bit of a trail behind it, but you really wouldnt notice it unless you were actually looking for something in the sky. the trail sort of looked like a short/fat version of a jet contrail, but the way it was emanating from a slightly round object, you could tell it wasnt a plane.

Thanks for the explanation - it is appreciated.

just now I heard some kind of boom in Stockholm
If you're serious can you elaborate?

Those videos are incredible... how are the people in the cars not flipping out over seeing something like that?? I would at least expect to hear a "woah!" or something. Weird.
I hate when people in US-videos can't stop repeating "Oh my god!" over and over again. So annoying.
