Meteos - Gamespot review

Wafflecopter said:
It's not evident at all Dillinger, seeing as there is none. Care to share how exactly are they biased, besides fanboy's not liking the scores their games get on Xbox and GC.
I dont need to explain, their sony bias is as clear as day. Only a sony fan [yourself included Carver] would say otherwise.

Currently on a week-long trip right now and have been playing the holy hell out of Meteos (the import version). In fact, I've been playing this game more consistently since its release than anything on DS or PSP. There are so many layers of depth here, and sooo many planets you can unlock, each with a unique physics system. I've been trying to find a handful of good ones for multiplayer death dealing.

Going to see john_tv tomorrow... I'll unleash some of this pent up practice on him!

Best game on DS, hands down.

I've also played Meteos and yes I couldn't put it down either(borrowing my friend's import). Lumines was great too, but it kind of got boring after a little while, but Meteos is always fun for some odd reason and the multiplayer is great. I think GS kind of overrated Lumines, I'd drop Lumines to like an 8.6 and raise Meteos to an 8.8.

as far as puzzle games go i am LOVING polarium!

if you guys are into tetris type mind twisters with blocks shapes and so forth then ya gotta try that title out .

the multi player is a blast too.

anyone who's played this wanna compare the puzzle types??

Lumines and Meteos are more, in-your-face, reflex-testing puzzlers, whereas Polarium is more of a brain-twister. Good stuff, all around.

Was looking forward to Meteos before my total lack of interest in video games hit. Great to see that it turned out well.

I don't get Meteos -or- Lumines. I give Meteos the benefit of the doubt because I haven't played more'n thirty minutes of it, but Lumines was a shallow, overdesigned and underdeveloped piece of sugary audiovisual candy crap.

WHERE'S MY KIRBY STAR STACKER UPDATE.

This is the truest post ever posted, though I haven't played 30 minutes of Meteos yet... I pretty much expect it to be lame & shallow like Lumines was.

I dunno... the 1000 Line mode of Polarium certainly requires fast input... I still haven't beaten it because I am too slow.

Well, that's definitely true. I haven't dabbled very far into that mode yet because I wanted to finish the puzzle mode first. Kinda forgot about that, actually.

Interesting... I thought it was ok at E3, but nothing exceptionally phenomenal. I'm thinking of getting a DS when I visit Asia in a month anyway.

Post another photo entry in your blog! :)

Drinky speaks the truth! I don't get either game.

I think its to make people feel cool even if they don't particularly enjoy the games. They convince themselves they do because everyone supposedly like it.

Of course, true puzzler officianados can be excused from this generalization.

Anyone who viewed Gamespot's PSP launch compared to the DS launch knows what side their bread is buttered on. Kasivin claims there was such lopsided coverage(on this very forum) because his crew felt the public was much more interested in the PSP, and that dictated what they presented on their site. Anyone interested in seeing Gamespot's nonstop coverage of cellphone games over DS ones? Had no idea Splinter Cell for the Ngage was in such high demand. Buttered bread.

That's funny, Che, I remember you saying that you didn't like Meteos very much before E3. I guess it grew on you quite a lot!

That's the thing about Sakurai's work, the levels of depth are not easily seen wihin the first few hours.

i'm still pretty fresh on Polarium, does ithave lots of unlockables, i think i am only 20-30 into the puzzles section, the challenge section goes quick.

sorta wish it built up speed a bit slower.

so that's why only 3 exclusive ps2 games got a score over 9 in the last two years? guess that's evident.

In my opinion, GS was more Sony biased last generation. This one, they've withstood the test of time, especially their Mario Sunshine review.

Too many DS fans think DS games should get 9s and 10s because its on DS and doesn't completely suck ass.

I don't see how you can say all that in the review and not give it a 9.0.

I dunno, it's weird, the words seem to suggest a higher score.

Not that it matters. Lumines is amazing and Meteos will be too.

While I, like Drinky, haven't played Meteos for more than a brief period, from what I played, I prefer Lumines myself.

Personally, I never saw the so-called Sony bias at Gamespot. Sure, Greg scores some big games lower than the average, but it's across all systems. (MGS games, anyone?) In hindsight, I find GS to be the best guideline for reviews most of the time. That 8.0 for Mario Sunshine is about what I'd score the game after playing it extensively.

Not at all. Meteos and Lumines are easily the best puzzle games of all time. Meteos is a fast paced puzzle game for everyone, even if you haven't enjoyed puzzle games in the past. The pacing of Meteos keeps you on the edge, and gets you addicted very quickly.

Haha, you're like the 3rd or 4th person to mention that in the past two days.

I originally had an Adam West-Batman gif with a flashing pastel colored seizure background, but someone told me it annoyed them. I think it was demi, not sure.

Is Meteo fast? I like to take my time in puzzle games. When it's too fast it stress me out more than giving me fun and actually be relaxing.

Meteos is the anti-relaxing. It's one of the fastest, most harried puzzlers I've ever played.

<ModernReviewLogic> Look, I thought the game was really great. I just don't relfect that in the score, actually if you ignore the score then everything makes perfect sense.

Once again, my brain is on lock at trying to reconcile an 8.5 with "Greg is teh bias!"

Maybe I just live in some strange world where any game that gets an 8 or higher at GameSpot is worth playing...

Or perhaps, I just realize that score breakdowns of 9,7,8,8,9 (Meteos) and 9,8,9,8,10 (Lumines) are pretty much THE SAME when you look at what matters most.

Both games received a 9 for gameplay and an 8 for value. Considering the genre and the systems involved, I could care less about the graphics and sound scores... which leaves the Tilt score. Anyone that wants to write a litanous diatribe concerning the .3 that the different Tilt scores brings to the table can feel free.

This whine about score discrepancies is nuts. Chances are, a person will enjoy one over the other because the design appeals to them more. Or, they'll enjoy both because they're both very different. A mere .5 shouldn't be the deciding factor for a rational mind.

Sony bias? God. I can't believe anyone in their right mind even has to think very hard to understand why every site seems to have pushed the PSP harder than DS during launch. The DS launch was terrible. It was flaccid. I felt swindled after realizing I paid for Super Mario 64 and Ridge Racer 64 yet again, and after beating Feel The Magic six ways from Sunday. By comparison, the PSP launch was spectacular--Lumines, WipeOut, Untold Legends, Darkstalkers, Tony Hawk, and a much better Ridge Racer game two weeks later.

Now, the roles have reversed -- and you can see the tone shift at any multi-console website you visit, even GameSpot. PSP's release schedule is bleak, whereas Nintendo has a lot of AAA stuff upcoming. Games like Kirby, Meteos, Advance Wars, Nintendogs, and so forth are getting or are going to get great reviews and scores because they are great games or are going to be great games... whereas the PSP's crop of Dead to Rights, Midnight Club, and Coded Arms will inevitably not fare so well (having played two of the three, I feel confident in that assumption).

Does that mean GameSpot will be biased in the DS's favor this summer? That IGN will be biased in the DS's favor this summer? That GameSpy, Modojo, et al will be biased in the DS's favor this summer?

God no. It means great games get great scores.

(Argh, why do I let myself get so agitated when someone screams 'bias' to the point that I end up writing such a lengthy, somewhat thoughtful, and yet entirely pointless rant? Chronic insomnia just isn't a comforting excuse.)

mosaic, you could have just have easily wrote: "People who think either place is inherently biased toward any particular company are just looking at the situation from their own [insert color here] goggles."

By comparison, the PSP launch was spectacular--Lumines, WipeOut, Untold Legends, Darkstalkers, Tony Hawk, and a much better Ridge Racer game two weeks later.

Why are PSP still trying to convince us that Untold Legends and Darkstalkers weren't completely average (being nice here) games?

You know, about that GS Sony bias... might it have anything to do with the fact that most of the editorial staff deals with around three times the PS2 games than any other platform they work with? The more you're exposed to something, the more natural bias you have toward it. </semi-sarcasm>

Lumines is good to play in long sittings. Meteos is good to play in short sittings. They're both good games by the same developer using each system to its best current strengths. If you have a PSP, you should have Lumines. If you have a DS, you should have Meteos. Having both is okay. Simple as that.

Same, I only played the puzzle mode in Chu Chu Rocket, can't remember what it was called but it was the one where the stage was paused you set your arrows then press play (so to speak) and see how it all worked out.

IBTN.

PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast handily defeat any handheld.

EGM's Lumines review: 7.5 8.5 9.5

EGM's Meteos review: 9.0 9.0 9.0

So it did score higher in one review source..............by .5 after averaging the 3 scores. Whoopie.
By 1.5.
