Metroid Dread - Canceled? - (October 07, 2005)

Sources close to Nintendo tell N-Next that the sequel to Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dread, has been canceled and that the title is no longer in production.

Having first appeared in the June 2005 edition of Game Informer, Metroid Dread was unofficially revealed along with many other e3 2005 titles such as Touch Golf. Of course, gamers began to grow skeptical due to the magazine being released prior to e3 2005. When the first images began to appear from e3, every game, including Zelda's Twilight Princess title, was revealed by Nintendo except for one game: Metroid Dread.

Why was it not revealed at e3 if it existed? Our sources claim that the title was only in pre-developement and was only in its project stages. Now, our sources, whom are close to Nintendo, are reporting that the title has been canceled all together.

Will we ever find out if it did exist? Will we ever find out that it was truly canceled? We may never find out, and if we do find out, it won't be any time soon since Nintendo never officially revealed it so an official cancelation comfirmation probably won't take place.
i remember seeing the scan listing it for ds around e3 05, but nothing else.

has anyone heard anything? could it have been moved to gba?

Who was working on this anyway? If it was Intelligent Systems, maybe they scrapped the project and started working on the recently revealed Wario Land game instead. Sad to see it go if that's the case.

It might be, but I very much doubt N-Next know anything.

We haven't seen Zelda yet which we knew about a hell of a long time before Dread and the same goes for Pokemon. We'll have to wait and see, but at the moment I'll side with not showing it because it'd be pretty stupid before Hunters is out.

The sources are bullshit. The game won't show its face again until E3 after Metroid Prime Hunters and Pinball are released.

Intelligent Ststems has nothing to do with the title. Sakamoto at EAD should be doing it.

It will be shown at E3 2006, so I don't think it was cancelled.
Release: Fall 2006

It just wasn't ready for this year. They wanted to show it this year, but then MP:H was delayed. They didn't want people to be confused.

<- My speculation.

@Zerodoppler
Suzac develops Wario Thief as far as I know.

n-next? who the fuck are they?

seriously, I doubt they know anything. Everybody wants to have a "source" these days, but in reality they just have an imagination.

i wasn't sure about the trustworthiness of N-Next, especially since they misspelled cancelled throughout the article.

I bet it wasn't shown at E3 just because they were already showing three other Metroid games (Pinball, Huntesr and Prime 3 teaser).

I don't! As much as I love Super Metroid and I loved Zero Mission, why would you want a remake when we could get a new game?

Do you have any backup for this? I don't know either way, but calling sources bullshit without some support on the other side that the game exists is sort of weird...

what's been suggested here is what i assumed. show metroid dread after hunters and pinball, at e3 06. i can't imagine nintendo not making another 2d metroid game after the success of fusion.

with regards to wario thief it does look like suzak is developing it according to Game Watch.

NOT COOL if true.

But, like others, I have a tendency to be skeptical of this news. If it doesn't show at E3, then this news is more probable.

I didn't really enjoy Fusion for a variety of reasons. I'm not sure what to expect from a sequel. MOTS?

Speaking of sequels, any idea if there's going to be a Metroid Prime 3, or if they're actually going to jump ahead in the timeline a bit? I didn't really like MP2 :/ It was far from a bad game, but the whole light/dark crap was gimmicky and annoying. I got sick of switching worlds less than half way through the game. Final suit looked great though ;)

Why do people trust these no-name sites that post news like this to increase their traffic? They don't know anything. They have no sources.

Why the hell would IntSys be working on this game?

:lol I can't believe this article.

Even if the new Metroid in its current state was cancelled -- which AFAIK it's not -- Nintendo virtually always has a new Metroid project for handhelds going at any given time. It's one of their biggest properties here in the West. They're not going to just cancel it.

No way that Nintendo is going to cancel a Metroid game at this point when the series has proven to be a cash cow during the GC/GBA days.

Fucking better be still on. Haven't heard anything about it in a long, long time though. If anything has happened... someone is going to die.

Sakamoto rocks. IntSys is probably in the pre production planning of FE: DS and maybe a Paper Mario title.

If I had to guess, their source was probably Dragona going nuts in that other Metroid thread we had here this week. If the game hasn't been shown by next E3, then it'll be time to hit the panic button.

Please note: I never said it was cancelled, I just said I wouldn't put it past them if Hunters is as popular as Prime was.

If that happens, someone is going to pay. Dearly. *twitch*

That makes sense.

Just mindless speculation on my part. Didn't mean to tick you off. Sorry about that.

I heard Nintendo cancelled R&D for their next Gameboy and only plans on releasing remodel verions of GBA.

My source is Miyamoto's ass.

Can't get any closer to Nintendo than that.

They'll probably show if after Prime: Hunters is out.

I don't think they anticipated that Metroid Prime: Hunters would move into 2006, considering they had demos for it in 2004.

It'd be kinda weird if the game was finished and Nintendo was just sitting on it, waiting for the Hunters team to finish.

Multisyllable English words that end in L can be spelled with either a single or double L once conjugated.

What the... he's THE NINJA, he doesn't need any backup.

You have only been here since July, so this transgression is [partially] forgiven. Suffice to say, Ninja knows what he's talking about.

Yeah, I wasn't really doubting him necessarily, I was just hoping for a little more information supporting it...

Although 2D metroid is fine and dandy, 3D metroid trumps it.

I want both, but it seems like Nintendo doesn't seem to realize that!

Blasphemer! I'm no 2D only advocate, but some series are just better left in 2D and Metroid is one of them.

Oh shit, now you've done it.

*runs for cover*

I don't have any first hand information from the development team. I just have a good idea of what is going on with the development teams.

No. Just no.

Maybe a very well done third person 3D version could match it.

So do I. And I want a 3rd person action game. Nintendo, are you listening?!?!

Remember that horrible looking "Metroid 4" that was revealed a few E3s ago, and at least 1 E3 early? It looked like a well animated GBC game running on the GBA. When it was ready, it was re-unveiled in fanstastic form as Metroid Fusion.

Metroid Dread was probably so freaking early that it really wasn't worth showing off, particularly when there are two other Metroid handheld titles to show off which are much further along.

after playing Castlevania DoS on the DS I can't fucking wait to see what Nintendo does with Metroid Dread.
