Fair enough, though Pokemon seems to be the exception and the differing versions more of a design decision to encourage it's social aspects more than offering a slightly tweked "new" release for repeat buying.drohne said:and jarrod: pokemon.
I dunno, all Konami's notable games this generation (Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Contra, Gradius, Castlevania, Yu-Gi-OH!, Suikoden, Goemon, DDR, ISS, ESPN, Disney Sports, Shaman King, TMNT, Rave, Getbackers, Bloody Roar, etc) seem to be rooted in established franchises and licenses. Sure they might have a diversion like Boktai or ZOE here and there, but so do Nintendo (Pikmin, Giftpia, Kururin, Napoleon, etc). I'd say by in large all Konami does is milk, hell over half their total output is based on a license of some sort.drohne said:i'm digressing, but the trouble with nintendo isn't so much that they milk the hell out of their established franchises as that they do so little else of note. can't say that about capcom or konami.
And yet, they're all unique individual games. Not essentially the same game released 3-4 times in one year.dark10x said:No, but we have seen Mario Parties, Mario racing, Mario golfing, Mario Pinball, Mario RPGs, Mario Paint, Mario Typing, Mario puzzle games, Mario's Brewery, Mario's early years, Mario Slug X, Mario Andretti Racing, Mario TV shows, Mario underwear, Mario head gear, Mario condoms, Mario dentures, Mario's Time Machine, Mario movies, Mario curly poop, Mario is Missing, Mario Baseball, Mario paper edition, Mario pencils, Mario pens, Mario folders, Mario backpacks, Mario furniture, Mario carpet, Mario wallpaper, Mario soy product, Mario cereal, Mario fast food, Mario toys, Mario keitai, Mario shoes, Mario fanboys, and other assorted Mario products...
Errr...wait...
SomeDude said:NST is probably making the game since they are also working on Hunters.
I bet the game sucks ass.
If Nintendo made Metroid Pinball, it will be like Nintendo is saying to retro "screw you retro, you made Metroid popular and too mature for us. Nintendo rule 1, Kiddy = profit!!!!"

Hey, I agree. In the past 20 years the world of the video games has seen a linear progression/expansion all the time. In other words the more beefed up technologies and functionalities have enabled the game publishers to realize more beautiful graphics and more gorgeous game contents.
Because that kind of expansion was simply going on until quite recently, those who are doing business in this industry somehow believed that this kind of formula would always bring us the bright future.
But Nintendo, for one, has a different idea. Nintendo believes that that kind of successful formula has reached a saturation point. So that is why Nintendo is going to take a different approach and for Nintendo, taking such a different approach is something taken for granted. But probably for those who have seen the past succesful formula as valid, maybe they see how Nintendo approaches the issue as something alienating.

Next thing you know, they'll be mixing ice cream and chocolate syrup.
Exactly. My greatest concern is that the gameplay is unique. This is why I don't buy Mario Party games, but may try Mario Baseball. Yeah, it'd be better if there was a distinct set of characters and environments with each Nintendo game, and their approach may only be hurting them in the long run, but I don't get tired, so long as the game formula isn't.jarrod said:And yet, they're all unique individual games. JackFrost2012 said:Why is everyone talking about Revenge of the Gator as if it's the only thing to compare Metroid Pinball to? You are aware there have been portable pinball games in the last 15 years, right? Some of them from HAL, even.
I just feel betrayed. Mario is one thing, but Samus? I thought we had an understanding.
The latter, I definitely understand. But the former... yeah, that's strange.Amir0x said:Exactly. This is the point for me: I literally cannot stand Mario or the Mario universe anymore. Nintendo has effectively killed any and all charm they once had for me. I can accept it in platformers and perhaps the occasional RPG (and even Double Dash disappointed me), but I'm through supporting this other franchise milks.

You see, that's fine. It's Pac-Man so it's very loose and happy. It lends itself to something such as pinball. Even House of the Fucking Dead is fine as a pinball game because of its arcadey roots, but not Metroid.jarrod said:BTW, Namco Hometek's releasing Pac-Man Pinball on GBA next month.
That's fine. I just think "literally cannot stand" is strangely strong language considering.Amir0x said:You know how certain things have a breaking point before they're not longer "cute" or "appealing"? Well, Mario sort of has reached that point about fifteen spin-offs ago (for me). And now everytime I hear about a new spin-off I plot new and devious ways to argue about it on the internet.
And I don't support it with my money. Doesn't change the fact that every other Nintendo fan supports it with their money, but they won't get it from me! Bargain bin in a backalley store at very best for a completist library!
drohne said:well, it's no more of a travesty than prime or prime hunters. and as a big fan of alien crush, i think this could be cool. as long as they're not letting the mario pinball people develop.
Sure, but Nintendo doesn't release 2-4 different tweaked versions of that same Mario Party within that same year. That's what sets Konami or Koei apart. Also, Mario Party skipped a year (2001).dark10x said:Ah, but that's not including the fact that Mario parties like once a year (Mario Party 1-6 + Advance) and does all kinds of other stuff constantly.

Proportionately, Konami and Koei both release far fewer "new" IPs than Nintendo actually as well. Should we start up a list?
