Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

I was thinking it would land in the 85-89 range. Still excited to play on Thursday.

The hive mind of gamers/"gaming press" has been interesting to watch the last 10+ years or so with the rise of social media. You see how quickly narratives take over on a regular basis. I'm more personally invested in if the actual map design is true to Metroid and whether the bike stuff works well, but everything got hijacked by chatty sidekicks and how that's not Metroid, yet everyone told me how amazing of an achievement the last two God of War titles were despite having an annoying kid talking to me the entire game.
Yes, I can understand the issues with NPCs and pacing, but the narrative went sour on this game when the talking scientist videos started to circulate.

The perception of a talking sidekick in a Metroid game is so loaded that people make it into something it's not.

Ever since I returned my S2 at launch I've been peering over the horizon for some killer gaming experiences that can't be missed.

Based on the general consensus of this thread, Looks like there still aren't any

I expected it due to the dev hell the game went through, but I'm still kind of disappointed. I basically bought the console for two games: Metroid and Xenoblade.

I will wait for some opinions here in the OT before deciding whether to buy it or not, every fucking Nintendo game is 70 euro now, no way I'm paying that for a middling entry compared to the other Prime games.

If the next Xenoblade is a miss I'm going to sell the console and just play exclusively on PC for good.

dude, this is a prime game

Prime 1 - 97 MC
Prime 2 - 92 MC
Prime 3 - 90 MC
Prime 4 - 81 MC ( atm )

ppl had HIGH expectation for this one, its scoring almost as low as Other M that is considered one of the "worst" Metroid games out there, also 20% of the reviews are "mixed reviews" its not like ppl are focusing at the only mixed review at MC.

This thread is full of drama queens. It's getting 10s and 9s. It's not "The worst game ever" like some are acting.
Yeah...there is a certain amount of drama. This is GAF after all. But you have to admit that when it comes to Nintendo's heavy hitters, people expect damn near perfection based on their past history. With that being said, the game is still reviewing decently.

I fucking told you people. No way were they going to rein it in. Not after showcasing it in the trailer.

See you in another 18 years for Metroid Prime 5. Nintendo can keep this one.
I just watched the DF review and at the end he commented on this, it isn't as intrusive as some suggest.
Still it's only one of many opinions...

Disappointing scores, i thought it will score a little bit more, but low 80s is not where i think for Metroid franchise!
I knew something was sus when they moved its release past the cut-off date for Game Awards, they realized they can't compete and probably shifted it to Holidays so that it can capitalize on revenue before it goes to being forgettable.

I like the chatty Metroids (Fusion, Prime 3, Other M) so I'm OK with this. Samus doesn't need to be alone 100% of the time or stoic 100% of the time. She doesn't need to be a silent protagonist either (even Super let her monologue at the beginning).

Taking modern review scores into account at all is fucking stupid

And yet here you are in the thread.

Genuinely incredible to see gamers still having meltdowns over the concept of opinions in 2025.

If you don't care about reviews, fine. Literally nobody gives a shit what you do with your money.

Nobody is telling you what to think, either. They're telling you what *they* think. Fuck me, why does this need explaining again and again and again?

Did the definition of mixed change? Most of the reviews are positive, it was 79 about what, an hour ago? So the score is going up, meaning more positive reviews are coming in than negative or actually mixed reviews.

My biggest issue I've had leaning up to this game's release is all the knee jerk reactions. The moment I saw the motorcycle I knew the desert would be like Hyrule field in OoT, even saying that a few weeks ago, while everyone else said the entire game would be like BotW, look how that turned out.

Then there was the scare with Myles recently. From most of the reviews I've read and watch, the NPCs are there for slight story beats, a escort mission similar to the one in Metroid Prime 3, and are relegated to a hint system that can be turned off.

I have no doubts this game will be amazing and I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it.

Watched a few reviews as well, why didn't they just focus more on a FPS crawl instead of shoe horning in The motorcycle parts. It's looks so bland and mobile like.. Metroid just needed to be a more Halo esch FPS with some puzzles IMHO.

"Meltdown"

Ok dude, I was just curious what was being said about the game (not that'll affect my opinion which was my point), I didn't type like 10 sentences bitching about it. Look into a mirror.

Thread is pure cringe:

On one side you have people salivating for this game to fail.

On the other you have people panicking over nothing.

And then we have the people who are just laughing at them, waiting to play the game and form their own opinion.

Gaming journos are a joke, I have seen enough of them in the last 25 years to ignore them completely.

It sounds like a simple patch letting you turn off the companions and waypoints would fix most problems people have with the game. But I guess that goes against the hive mind that says this game is unsalvagable trash 🤷‍♂️

I know we're in the minority, but I agree. The idea of it being more accessible, borrowing elements from Zelda, and having interactive NPC's will understandably rub a lot of Metroid purists the wrong way. For me? It's exactly what I'm looking for.

I don't think you're ever going to be able to "turn them off" considering Myles does your weapon upgrades and the other characters have actual supporting roles.

Scores seem a bit harsh for the franchise.

Happens if media wants a dev to course correct. Game does look cool.

Mostly am seeing npcs being criticised. Am ok with them if they handled them properly. Not completely opposed to light hearted Metroid, but it should make some sense.

It's wild that they could have probably increased their average score by 5 points just by adding an option to turn off hints.

What the fuck is wrong with Retro/Nintendo.

thank you...

The other issue with all this is the Metacritic is at 81, and Opencritic is at 83.... Both are pretty favorable. Now this game has had a lot of negativity about the NPC's, so it will depend on who is reviwing this. But I am still not sure when 80% became a bad game. Still very hyped for this...
