Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

I'm doing a lot of skimming. Is there any chance the handholding and constant objective markers are gone when hard mode is unlocked? Or, does it plague the entire game?

The problem is game design. You don't fix it with a "hold my hand - ON/OFF" option. If the game had great exploration, it wouldn't need any of that. This feels extremely lazy and uninspired.

Some people acting as if the problem were the "low" scores. The real issue is what reviews SAY, not the scores. Actually, in many reviews the text is harsher than the score. It doesn't read like a great game at all. Retro has changed most of the things that make Metroid special for the same fatiguing elements you hate in every other game from Ubisoft or EA.

you know all the "fuck the reviews" folks (in a review thread nonetheless), would be dancing and jerking if this landed at 94 or something.

how childish can you get lol
I never trust reviews good or bad, the only opinion that should matter to anyone is their own. Yes it's always nice to see a game review well, but what if you did not personally like that specific game, or vice versa.

The other issue with all this is the Metacritic is at 81, and Opencritic is at 83.... Both are pretty favorable. Now this game has had a lot of negativity about the NPC's, so it will depend on who is reviwing this. But I am still not sure when 80% became a bad game. Still very hyped for this...
It's not. It's school yard shit. Some wierdos hate Nintendo like it's their job.

Anything under 95 = absolute trash fail

Just a meaningless statement.

It's amazing that every single time there is disappointment about reviews we have to go through this long, tedious, repetitive routine about reviews.

Some of you have been talking about games online for DECADES and still like it's day one in here every time the reviews are up for an anticipated game.

"I'm not like the other girls, I think reviews are fake and gay!"

As for the only opinion mattering be your own well sure, but that's not what this process of consulting reviews is about. It isn't finding your opinion.

I mean, are you going to pay for people's copies of the games so they can find out?

They don't? The original Metroid Prime lets you do this.
Nope. And what's worse is that it's an annoying character who calls you periodically, instead of it just being a little passive hint.

Not at all, and everything you just said works both ways. And I think you are overlooking the fact reviews good or bad are only personal subjective opinions.

So this is why Nintendo's marketing for the game has been absymal. If they themselves do not believe in the game's quality, how can the fans do? The disappointment is totally justified given that most of the main Metroid games have been critically acclaimed. Levels look atmospheric but are linear, mechanically simple and uncreative (except for Volt Forge). Music sounds good. Sol Valley is a non-value pointless addition. Same with the bike. Companions seem so-so. It's fine to make changes, but at least try to put more effort into doing so. Retro clearly did not, wasting so many years just to churn out a subpar game.

How do you know the 'disappointment' is justified? You haven't played the game.

Seems like a cart before the horse take.

the few bad (ish) reviews look like they are just echoing what the haters were saying about the preview... I doubt those people even played it. They are all probably part time interns. no one has dedicated reviewers anymore.

Metroid is the only thing I'd even consider getting a Nintendo system for. Glad I didn't even bother.

Miles, as feared from those divisive initial previews, turns out to be the main supporting character in the game, gracing players with his Jar Jar Binks brand of comedy quips via intercom messages and regular visits throughout the game. The other cast members are also flimsy caricatures, including the equally irritating Armstrong, a Samus fangirl who winces at the bounty hunter's presence and, at one point, even asks for her autograph.

It's quite simple! I play enough great games to tell just from my eyes whether a game is good or not. Metroid Prime 4, has never looked good to me since the first announcement trailer in 2024.

And you go by what the random site you chose to quote in your purchases and personal tastes, huh? A dedicated *checks* videogameschronicle.com fan since 2019 it debuted on huh.

You better get a Nintendo system as they scored the last Pokemon 5/5, must be a must play. They scored Silksong the exact same as Prime 4 as well, 3/5, yet you believe it'll win indie GOTY! And Metroid Dread 5/5 so, better get that Nintendo system for Metroid after all (this is a Switch 1 game too).

You better get a Nintendo system as they scored the last Pokemon a perfect score, that must mean it's a must play. They scored Silksong the exact same as Prime 4 as well, 3/5. And Metroid Dread 5/5 so, better get that Nintendo system for Metroid after all then (this is still a Switch 1 game too).
to be hones there is no reason to get a Switch 2 at the moment other than DK ( if the person really loves DK, cause for me it isnt a system seller ), Prime 4 is also a Switch 1, so no need to buy a $400 console when you can pretty much buy the game and emulate at true 4k@60fps.

Thread is pure cringe:

On one side you have people salivating for this game to fail.

On the other you have people panicking over nothing.

And then we have the people who are just laughing at them, waiting to play the game and form their own opinion.

Gaming journos are a joke, I have seen enough of them in the last 25 years to ignore them completely.
Honestly, the fact that even reviewers said that federation troops were annoying is very concerning, considering they do not care about this usually in Sony games (that I personnally loathe).

Pretty sure the main reason for most to buy a Switch 2 is Mario Kart World, it's by far Nintendo's best selling franchise. I think we often confuse what we want on here, with what the wider consumer base actually want.

Yeah, but i saw a lot of ppl disapointed with MKW and i m not talking about Neogaf community, there is like this sentiment that the game is a letdown and way worse than MK8, ppl seens to liked but not as much as 8.

How many peope in reality is this though?, not suggesting that there might not be a wider demographic that are upset. But we really do not have the slightest bit of evidence to suggest that people are either happy or unhappy with this game as a whole.

I know that you dont agree but users scores are really helpful ( at least for me )

World has one of the lowest users scores for MK games and there is no real reason to believe that the game was review bombed or anything, also lots of complaining i red online are 90% about the multiplayer/online.

Also, usualy you have almost the same numbers of ppl watching MK8 gameplay than MKW and MK8 has like 20x more followers than the new MK game on Twitch.

You can say that nothing of this matters to you, but for me It draws a clear picture of wich one of these 2 games ppl are more happy with it.

I still bought it because Nintendo first party only goes up over the years. But boy, is this just yet another reason I hate I had to buy a Switch 2... There's still nothing amazing on it.

Reviewers are a joke, no 2 ways about that but...the defence force at display here is the usual one when it comes to everything Nintendo, someone help my guy Mozza 'cause he's been doing double shifts since the topic went up.

And by the way, 80+ isn't a bad score by any means, it's just that everything that people were worried about from the previews are, in fact in the game - the same things that the usual 4-5 absolute fanboys in here were trying to deflect for weeks now by calling others "haters®" and accusing them of "concern trolling ®"

It's not about "hate", the thing that will bring this company down is the insufferable, zealot fanbase which is 100x worse than xboys Sonyboy and PCMR combined.

Yeah, and it's so funny the fanboys from the other thread that were constantly downplaying the concerns we were expressing, are nowhere to be seen in the review thread...
