Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

Ruh-roh.

80's a decent score, but for a Metroid game, it's a bit of a disaster.

Could see this coming a mile off with the previews.
I'm seeing a lot of 8s,9s and 10s. Seems a few sites decided to tank the overall score...idk, I'll wait until more reviews come in and the dust settles.

Either way, there's no way I'm missing out on a 4k HDR 60fps New MP game..!!

Nintendo should give the job to Hell is Us devs, they understand the right philosophy for this franchise from a narrative and game design perspective.
In a perfect world, I envision a grittier and more mature Metroid. Considering the original was inspired by Giger/Alien.

In an alternate timeline, probably.

Dang, this is a big fall off from the previous titles (going by these scores). I'm still buying it though. It's still a good game.

Hand-holding in a Metroid game? What's happening with gaming?
we have to go back jack shephard GIF
I mean this has been the case since Zero Mission.

Did they make Samus a lesbian in the ending?

On a serious note, the marvel chatter and sidekick bullshit is going to suck, but i'm still going to get it. If they nailed most of the core Metroid experience, then i can overlook the blue hair bullshit.

Sad to say it but people should vote with their wallets.

I mean, after 8 years of waiting for a game in one of my favorite franchises I'm still gonna play it and make my own opinion. There's quite a few reviewers that liked it a lot too, it's not like it's a trainwreck. Similar scores as Kirby Air Riders here which I'm having a complete blast with. Better to try things for yourself.

Eh, seems fine. The lack of a Direct had me worried there was a chance the game was pure crap and Nintendo just wanted it out of the way, so I'm just glad that isn't the case.

I mean, 14 of the 60 reviews so far score the game below an 8.

That's 23% of the reviews. A fair amount.

Miles, as feared from those divisive initial previews, turns out to be the main supporting character in the game, gracing players with his Jar Jar Binks brand of comedy quips via intercom messages and regular visits throughout the game. The other cast members are also flimsy caricatures, including the equally irritating Armstrong, a Samus fangirl who winces at the bounty hunter's presence and, at one point, even asks for her autograph.

It's sombre stuff for fans of the more grounded games in the Metroid series, and powers some dated gameplay segments, including escort and protection sequences that result in a game-over screen if your AI companions aren't properly protected. All the while, they'll reward you with dialogue barks like, "Sarge, look! She's doing Morph Ball!"

I got a Switch 2 just for this game. Fuck me...

If you look solely at the number of cutscenes in each title, Beyond contains more than all three previous adventures combined. Here, only a bit is left to the imagination, and with a new focus on characters and drama, the game tries to expand its already established universe with a more personal story about camaraderie and solidarity. For someone used to the Metroid series being primarily about solitude, it's a strange left turn to get accustomed to, and although there are plenty of moments for solo exploration, that trademark sense of vulnerability is noticeably absent. It should be noted, however, that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption already started heading in this direction with a large-scale action focus nearly twenty years ago, but here much of the mystery and darkness once again disappears as humorous one-liners and helpful tips are dispensed at every opportunity.

Speaking of darkness, Beyond is a colorful adventure that contrasts sharply with the series' predecessors. There are certainly plenty of dark passages in the form of abandoned research stations and shuttered mines, but Viewros is a planet that makes use of the entire color palette—both for better and worse. The use of purples and greens, combined with sleek architecture, can evoke old-school science fiction vibes, but it can also occasionally give a disjointed impression when, one moment, you're fighting angry monsters inside a gloomy volcanic facility, only to then ride a motorcycle across bright yellow sand dunes under a clear blue sky.

It feels like my worst fears have come true. This is the exact opposite of what I wanted. The disappointment is immeasurable.

The only was to remedy this unconscionable debacle is a proper 2-D Metroid Fusion II (or any Metroid game) made by Moon Studios. LFG!

Good scores overall. Personally I have not been enthusiastic about the game since the direct where they showed off the horrid motorcycle parts. I have too many games to play so this one is on the back burner.

The LCD. Lowest Common Denominator. You don't want more money in gaming, you want less. It's too late now though, now gaming is never at risk of "dying", so why try..
Silksong should tell devs that you don't have to cater to the lowest common denominator. Just cater to the actual metroidvania userbase. It's a big enough userbase. And Metroid anything will sell by default to this audience, it's the original IP of the genre, not Prime but Metroid.

Now they'll have to listen to a disappointed fanbase complaining loudly everywhere. And diehard Nintendo fans will defend it no matter what so the negative talk won't go unnoticed even among casuals.

Per the reviews I saw, it seems this is a little more linear than Metroid Prime, and isn't as interconnected. I prefer the interconnected format, but as long as it has all the Metroid goodies, I'll still love it.

Ah fuck off, this was my was supposed to be my price at the end of the year.

I'll probably still get it, because I know some of these journalist are overdramatizing the issues. But this is a bad scenario.

Modern Pokemon games are super cringe, but at least they don't have voice actors.

Now with Metroid we can imagine how could be a Pokemon game with voice.

I am just sad.

Zelda, Metroid, and then Super Metroid was the foundation of my gaming life. They influenced everything about the way I look at games.

To see my most beloved game series continually fall further and further from the heights that defined it is really painful. I held out hope for Metroid Dread, but it turned out to be yet another hand holding modern game.

On one hand I am sad. The greatest game of all time Super Metroid, has devolved into this kiddie game modern day marvel script slop.

On the other hand I got Silksong. A true successor to the throne of Metroidvania. A game made by people who absolutely within their soul understand what makes the genre shine.

I was going to buy a switch 2 for prime 4. Now I am not buying either of them.

"I know"

A guy commenting on the opinions of a game by people who have actually played it, versus himself who hasn't.

Please give us more of your insights.

Have you even read one single review start to finish?

Sour points of reviews are the NPC companions, Myles quipping you what to do or go next over comms in the desert, the Desert being a a BotW/TotK zone filled with Metroid equivalent of "Shrines", and Amiibo locking Viola cosmetic features and Viola Radio featuring I assume arranged Metroid music to play while riding around.

Everything else seems good. Looking forward to it.

Will be a divisive game probably.

This just makes me more excited to finally, eventually dive headfirst into Hell is Us. Is there really a solemn, isolated, alien tone to the whole thing that's reminiscent of the older Metroids?
