Metroidvania the Recommendations thread Part 2

I picked up Afterimage during the Xbox Black Friday sale, but I am not quite sure if it is a recommend yet. It is fun, but I have to play it some more.

The only games in the genre that really sucked me in are Aria of Sorrow, Symphony of the Knight, Hollow Knight, and Metroid Dread.

That said, I rarely meet a game from this genre that I don't at least somewhat enjoy. It's a great genre.

What game is closest to prince of Persia lost crown? I loved that. And preferably not some 8bit

Guacamelee probably... I haven't actually played it myself, but I watched a friend play it for like 30 mins, and it was comparable I'd say. very much has skill based platforming, melee combat etc.

which reminds me that I gotta finally play it... I have both games on the Epic Store...

I get kind of annoyed in Metroidvania threads where people list games that aren't even close to Metroidvania. Unless I see a map that looks:

Map.original.jpg

...it's not a Metroidvania. That said, my absolute favorites in recent years:

Axiom Verge
Blaster Master Zero
Blaster Master Zero 2
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Carrion
Guacamelee!
Guacamelee! 2
Mummy Demastered
Ori and the Blind Forest
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Strider

Definitely interested in some other suggestions if they have a traditional map and back tracking like shown above.

Added 9 Years of Shadows (2023) to the AVOID list. That game sucked so much I removed it from my Steam account altogether. Played it for about two hours and most of it was me just having to restart entire sections because I died due to the shitty health/ammo system and poor combat.

Utter shite.

Recently played the Castlevania GBA games... and while Circle and Aria are both pretty good, Harmony is a big pile of wut.

Not only are the graphics and music much worse, the progression blocking is really obnoxious. It's easy to get lost/not know where to go next. I kind of liked the Maxim mode a lot better due to the blocking being removed, even though his speed and high DPS makes the bosses a breeze.

Hopefully you’re onto the DS collection next? I also share your opinion that HoD is very mid compared to CotM & AoS. I think PoR is the weakest of the DS ones, but leagues better than HoD.

Played Souldiers to completion again, this time with the Archer class. Also cleaned up a ton of time consuming achievements I missed last time, so I should be able to do Caster relatively quickly, in less than 15h.
I'm still blown away by the art. The controls and gameplay are solid, story and writing felt even better this time around. But there are a litany of problems so my recommendation comes with a list of asterisks.
