Mexico's deadly Coca-Cola addiction | Unreported World

Today I found this short documentary on Chiapas, Mexico, the town that consumes the most sugary drinks in the world. I prefer to keep my YouTube as educational as possible, and this video was pretty fascinating.
A "healer" tells the crew, "this drink has healing properties," circling a Coca-Cola over candles, before continuing to tell that diabetes is what comes from anger and shouting, not from sugary drinks. She sells the drink in crates, capitalizing on its popularity for her con.

I have never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke.
Me. Though I’ve switched to Coke Zero Sugar now. No it doesn’t taste the same or even that good (people saying otherwise have forgot what real coke taste like, or are the type that think Cauliflower taste “just like!” Everything they try replacing with it.

At least they get real cane sugar and not HFCS.
You can get that all over SoCal, people call it Mexican Coke. Glass bottles and real sugar.
Here in the northeast, we call it just the same. Mexican Coke manufactured for Mexican sale actually switched over to HFCS a long time ago--though the exported bottles for Americans still use cane sugar :lollipop_grinning_smiling_eyes:

There are some good sodas, but i never understood the appeal of regular soda like coke and pepsi. I wouldn't drink it if it was both not bad for you and free. As is, there are far better things to use up your sugar quota on.

Aren’t you the cinnamon coke guy? If so, you would REALLY like Mexican hot chocolate.
I am the Cinnamon Coke guy! :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes: Still my favorite soda, and the only corn syrup soda I'll buy.
I've had Mexican hot chocolate! But my favorite hot chocolate is Chocolate Cortés, sold out of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. They also have a cinnamon variant, but I don't enjoy it as much as their regular hot chocolate bars (melt down, mix with milk).

Not sure how can you drink sugary drinks regularly, one glass per day for taste why not, but regularly it's disgusting.

I did that too, but I diluted it with quality alcohol, so I can drink it anywhere.

Growing up in a Mexican household this video hits close to home. Two years ago i ended up in the emergency room because my nurse thought i was having a heart attack. After alot of testing i was diagnosed with gastro disease a chronic version this means i cant drink or eat acidic foods. The Mexican diet is full of acids and sugars like tamarindo, jamaica, coke etc. The silver lining of being diagnosed it allowed me to rethink my whole food buying habits and leaning more towards keto. Havent had chocolate or soda in two years. Both my parents are diabetic so gastro probably saved me from heading towards that.

Awesome! I’ll have to try that!

That lady isn’t speaking spanish, anyways interesting video. I never slipped coke for years until my gf would make me buy it for her everyday. She’s skinny as fuck though. I need to go back to my zero coke, zero candy ways. I dont even care for it.

As much as people like to think we as humans are evolved, there are things like this that just play out with out question or common sense.

I learned about this back in 2009,

Agreed.

I dont care how religious someone is, or if they were home schooled by crazy antisocials thinking they are shamans.

Anyone who is teenager age should be smart enough to know super sugary drinks that are everywhere and a 12-pack can be bought for $5 arent the holy grail of beverages.

Kids are different. You only know what you know and what your parents or elders tell you.

Now Coke + Halloween treats is a different story. It turns you into a Hulkamaniac.

Life expectancy in Mexico 6-7 years lower than many European countries and 10 years lower than others. US is behind too.

Poor lifestyle and diet choices, such as high sugar intake fucks up the body. As well as access to healthcare of course.

Yeah but if you like soda, I guess that's what you do. Still it's far cry from having it as a main source of liquids.
I can't imagine replacing water with coke 9r pepsi or something. Wouldn't these people just be continually leaking a thin stream of diarrhea all day? That's what happened to me during my short but eventful red bull addiction.

I don't know, like I said I only use it in the past as a medium as to how to drink alcohol everywhere, after certain "bodily wrist slap" I went on drinking just water.

I have no opinion on this but I’m pleased that it hasn’t been a lightning rod for the I only drink water people. Freaks.

I rarely drink this (1 or 2 times per year at most, and mostly giving free), or even any other drink with half the volume of sugar in it. My daughter is 5 years old and she has yet to drink that poison.

Honestly, things like soda should be treated like a treat. You have it maybe once, a week. It's OK in moderation. I know people that will have three to four 12oz bottles a day. Like water doesn't exist.

It's very true about parents and what they past down to their kids. I was raised by by father and grandmother. My grandmother was big on making sure I always was drinking water. I would ask for hawaiian punch and other juices that were loaded with added sugars. She always would just give me the option of water. Once in awhile I would have juice and I'm happy she pushed that on me at such a young age.

It will make you appreciate a good soda or juice drink when you do have it.

I go for months without soda, and sometimes I drink it all the time. I like it. But I can tell you if you go without it for a while and you pick it up again, it taste amazing. MT Dew has a real burn to it when you are not used to it. I like it.
