MGS3 : a few questions...

I am getting audio skipping when firing up a codec, even later into the game (12 hours). I have a PSTwo and I doubt that it is going to stop anytime soon.

The game performs flawlessly via hdloader.

The reason codec sequences skip and take a while to load is because the game is constantly streaming around 5 or more "ambience" tracks. The PS2's DVD drive can't hold up. :P

It's odd for Konami to not optimize something like that.

Anyone else prefer the codec sequence/layout in the demo more than the final?

Either way, it's an annoying bug that hopefully is fixed in the European release/Greatest Hits.

Oli, you will not like MGS 3. Stay away

The controls are horrible if your not a MGS vetran, and the camera seems like a design flaw. I love MGS series so it really didnt bother me, but i can see others getting frustrated with it. Especially now that you are in an open environment with a camera suited for indoors

I actually found the camera worse indoors.. at least outdoors, you were almost always going North.

BUT, i just finished the game.. and ALL is forgiven. The last two hours are incredible.

I think you got this backwards. The camera is more forgiving in the outdoor jungle enviroment than indoors because there aren't as many tight turns. You are able to move around in more open space and you don't feel as contricted. Plus the ability to move the camera slightly with the right stick and lock it into place helps.

Plus, it isn't like you don't have tools at your disposal. There is an old school motion tracker you can use with your available battery power. It tracks all moving objects in the enviroment, but once you get used to it you can tell which moving objects are enemies and which moving objects are critters on the tracker.

i thought the indoor camera was great, back to the old MGS im familiar with. But then i thought the jungle sucked

Boss battle with The End = :_:

yeah they took out the map but didn't touch the camera system. It was really bad in the jungle, damn I didn't use any stealth at all.

This game needed a spinter cell type camera in the jungle stages but I doubt the PS2 could handel it.

well, I think that was the point for that fight. That feeling he could be anywhere and the vastness of the jungle. I think this is among everyone's favorite fight also, never really hear complaints. But the fight with Fury, that's the only time the camera really bugger me. Everywhere else I felt it was great and I wouldn't ever trade the cinematic view for an over the top. The cinematic views are a staple in MGS games. But I do agree that if you aren't a veteran it will frustrate. Also, i agree with goty sentiments. Learn the game and stealth and the payoff is tremendous. It's top 3 all time for me

"I'm in the beginning of the game w/ no bullets (electrified fence/swamp area)... So I'm a bit upset w/ the game."

not too far infront of you and i'm the same.

I just don't get it. People keep saying "oh, but you have to get X hours in for it to really click", but erm.... i dunno if i have the will to continue. I've liked one section of the game so far and the rest has struck me as good, but not great.

I will continue - 600+ people can't be wrong, so i'm determined to get to the good parts. Thing is though, AC!D just seems about 100 times more interesting so it's gonna be tough.

My feelings for the first 10 o so hours were pretty meh, mainly cuz I just wasn't gelling with the jungle vibe. But once the shit really started to hit the fan the game got absolutely incredible.

It takes quite awhile for the game to pick up, which is probably the biggest knock against it. But by the end you absolutely will not care.

I would at least get to the area after the fight with the Pain, and maybe a little beyond that before you decide to put down the game all together. That really was an awe inspiring moment for me, and the game really seemed to pick up after that.

Quick question, did anybody manage to download Santa camo? Is it even available for download yet? I didn't see it when I selected Camo Download option. All I saw were just first two (Mummy & something else which I forgot the name of).

Hmm, I just posted a new thread asking about Santa camo. Didn't even see you asked that already. No idea what the problem is, when they are going to make that camoflage available if not now?

Why do you think the camera being as it is in MGS3 has anything to do with technical limitations? After all, you can switch to first person view at any time, and that's basically the same point of view like the behind the shoulder camera.

When you are in first person mode you can see the game slow down and start "tearing" (sometimes) Since the maps are somewhat big, I doubt the PS2 could handle the game if the camera was directly behind snake and you could see all of the scenery and the enemy soldiers, that would be too much for the PS2.

Uggggh....
that battle would have been one of the most extremely lame experiences in modern gaming if you didn't have the thermal goggles. I was looking forward to an intense sniper fight, but when I realized that the game was going to make me search through 3 separate areas to find the guy, I was pretty let down. Fortunately, the thermal goggles not only let you spot The End from a distance but they will show you the footprints he leaves on the ground (thus leading you to his hiding spots). Instead of a sniper battle, I just walked right up and blasted his old ass with the shotgun. He goes down pretty quick with that technique, you just have to make sure to time your shots properly since he gets a few seconds of invincibility after he takes a hit.

To anyone starting the game -- for the love of god, get the Thermal Goggles as soon as possible. Search every area until you find them. At least two of the boss battles will be a nightmare if you don't have them.

I'm about to beat it for the second time. I can't wait to replay those last few hours and the ending.

I actually like The Fury battle a lot more than The End. I love the atmosphere of the Fury fight, how it's all dark and you can hear his footsteps. It's cool when you've got him in your sights with the sniper rifle, watching him slowly walk forward not noticing you up ahead.

The Fury fight was pretty cool and the area was well-designed, but it seemed a bit too easy if you just use the sniper rifle. Did anyone try to tranquilize him?

I think you just suck. For The End you could've just as easily used the mic to track him down. If I can beat The Fear on extreme with no goggles surely anyone can do it on normal

Uggggh....
I think you are not realizing how many ways are there to win in that fight. Using thermal googles like you described is just one way. It's altogether easy to track his position
using the directional microphone, and spot his exact location looking for a reflection of his scope using the binoculars.
. The only boss battle where Thermal Googles really come handy is battle with Fear, but even there with some creative thinking you can beat him fairly easy in at least two other different ways that I know of (not to mention have more fun and greater satisfaction than if you used TG)

When you are in first person mode you can see the game slow down and start "tearing" (sometimes) Since the maps are somewhat big, I doubt the PS2 could handle the game if the camera was directly behind snake and you could see all of the scenery and the enemy soldiers, that would be too much for the PS2.
As you can see, the game is already handling anything and everything that is required to have a plain view horizontal camera. You know yourself you can check and see it every time you go to first person view. You are right that it slows down in that view sometimes, but the team was obviously satisfied with it's performance enough, not to change any level structure. If they wanted, they could have easily let you go through the whole game with camera like that (as you again can use that camera anytime you want anyways)

I recognize and appreciate the fact that there are ways to beat bosses without thermal goggles, but at this point anyone just picking up the game is probably going to be a more casual "newbie" type looking for the easiest way to get through the fights. While alternatives exist, I don't really think I would want to use them.
For The End, pointing the directional mic at every possible sniping spot just sounds annoying and monotonous.

Just out of curiousity, though, what are the 2 "other methods" for defeating The Fear?

Well, kill a bunch of posion dart frogs and spread them through the area. When The Fear's stamina goes down halfway he will go for whatever food you threw. Eventually he'll die from getting constantly posioned.

I guess the other method is simply killing him by detecting his predator-ish camouflage without thermal goggles.

BTW, using a mic a The End's fight is not as painful as it seems. You can constantly hear his breathing and him repeating "This...is THE END". It makes for a much tense and dramatic battle. The second time I fought him that method became worthless cause I had found out that you could actually follow him when he ran away. The End's sniper battle is unfortunately a one-time experience.

It's easier to locate him that way than it sounds. Often quicker to nail his general position than looking around for him with TG, considering that he is sometimes hidden behind an object, etc.

Just out of curiousity, though, what are the 2 "other methods" for defeating The Fear
One is to
listen to where he is, and to look for the predator-like distortion of his shape in that direction. Then you have to position yourself strategically, so that you can have a good overview of places where he can jump to while he's jumping around you. Once you get down his positions, you can be prepared where to look next when you notice he starts jumping.

Another, more exotic way,
is that you can see that frogs mushrooms in that aree are all poisonous (Paramedic will tell you that). If you shot those frogs and mushrooms, but don't pick them up, Fear will eat them when his stamina gets low. Eating them will get his stamina down even further, and then you can finish him using the MK22 (this way, tranquing him to death, you get his Spider camoflage)

I just beat this earlier today. Damn good game all around.

I've always liked the bosses in Metal Gear games, but they really took it to the next level in this one with
several bosses that act like you're in a stealth deathmatch. The End was particularly nice, and I must say it scared the crap out of me the first time he snuck up behind me to deliver the killing shot.

This man speaks the truth.

Hey, have you heard about how AWESOME Metal Gear Solid 3 is? It's true! Join us!

I feel like a Jehovah's Witness, evangelizing to the nation.

I didn't even know that the battle with The End could take place in 3 different areas, I beat him entirely in the first area the fight starts in, and every time I walked near an exit and the screen became letterboxed I thought I'd quit the fight if I moved forward (I think someone on the codec told me that I can leave the fight and come back later if I wished) and I didn't want to stop the fight so I stayed in the same area until I beat him, only afterwards did I realize that I could have hunted him in 3 different [absolutely gorgeous] areas.

I did, but I used The End's Mosin Nagant, so my experience probably wasn't too different from yours.

I did on my first playthrough. And the battle is so much better for it. It turns into a game of cat & mouse when you try to get a Mk22 kill on The Fury. Lots of sneaking around. :)

The really awesome part is how the stage changes as the battles goes on. At first you need to use the NVG to see anything. But after the battle starts to heat up (pun very intended), you have to take them off because of the heat exposure from the flames. I love little touches like that. Flames everywhere! The FURY!
