Article:
With A Minecraft Movie owning the box office over the past month and HBO' The Last of Us returning with a bang, Universal is looking to add its own video game adaptation to the mix with the help of two big superstars. Sources tell Deadline that the studio is developing a feature adaptation of Sega's iconic arcade video game OutRun, with Michael Bay attached to direct and Sydney Sweeney aboard to produce. Jayson Rothwell will pen the script.

Bay will also produce alongside partner Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes banner, which has a first-look deal with the studio. The project is in development; as of right now, Sweeney is only on board to produce. Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3, Knuckles, Golden Axe) will also produce for Sega and Shuji Utsumi (president/COO of Sega Corp.) will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.

Plot details are vague. Sega's OutRun series is a franchise that originated from some of the most successful arcade games in the world during the 1980s. The game pioneered a new genre of driving games and spawned an electronic music subgenre aptly called "OutRun." The unique combo made it a worldwide hit. Since then, numerous installments have been released, including home console versions, and it continues to be one of Sega's flagship franchises.

Pretty great news as there is a gimmer of hope to get the Ferrari license back and relist some delisted classics.

This is 100% the silver lining.

The actual movie itself is the starkest example of "something that does not need to exist" I've ever seen. But if it means something game-related happening, with Ferrari intact... I mean, that's great.

I have to imagine the IP was extremely cheap to license, otherwise why even bother? The Outrun name means nothing to anyone under 30, you can name the movie literally anything and it'd probably do just as well.

This is the type of movie that I would have loved to see Tony Scott direct back in the day, given his visual style. But I think Michael Bay, could direct a good looking movie visually, and is capable of making a good film if he is given a solid script. The thing is... how would you make an OutRun movie? Would it be Cannonball Run with a dude and his girlfriend in a Ferrari Testarossa convertible? Would it be some sort of madcaps, the girl was kidnapped... but forms a relation with the driver, storyline? It would be pretty open for interpretation... and I guess they could use OutRun 2006 as a baseline? A movie set in 1986, might actually be pretty cool...

Babes & Cars, a Michael Bay trademark. Hopefully he still got it.

That's about the best thing you can say about Michael Bay. Michael Bay also clearly patterned his visual style after Tony Scott as well. The question is, how many explosions will it have per minute?

Would Ferrari be in?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Ferrari got the top billing. The actors involved are just co-stars.

I'm hoping he has fun with it, including the soundtrack. Baby Driver would be a good reference.

What will she be outrunning.
Shell be the heiress of some nebulous European country, industry, that has arranged marriages for some reason. Something like that and her father has found 3 suitors, they race across Europe from nebulous European monarchy to the port of Lisbon, the winning suitor wins her hand in marriage, if she wins she's free
Along the way she meets three Renaissance idiots to help her, and none other than James may, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson their antics allow her to find short cuts that give her the edge over the suitors
In the end she falls madly in love with James may and run off to build replica hurricanes or something

It's weird. But his visual style actually would kind of work for an OutRun movie. He is good at capturing the look of the California landscape. It will most likely feature a Ferrari as the main car, or multiple Ferrari models. I know fuck all about Sydney Sweeney, but she looks like someone Michael Bay would cast in a movie... even though she is producing? Starring role too?

It's OutRun, and a big dumb action oriented plot with lots of 'car play' involving various super cars and other high performance vehicles (throw a CyberTruck in there for the hell of it). I could see this turning into something. Hell, if Sega wanted to go crazy, they could set up limited release OutrRun machines at participating cinemas. in the lobbies. Classic or OutRun 2/ 2006.

As far as soundtracks go... I bet this will make the cut:

Or a remix of it.

For the hell of it, here's a list of cars that I would expect to see in a movie based on OutRun...

Ferrari Testerossa Starman (1984 - 1987) convertible. Even if this isn't the main car. It should at least have a cameo, or some side character drives one. It would be dumb not to feature this car in some capacity.

Ferrari F40 (F120) (1987 - 1992). It was the main car featured in Turbo OutRun The Sequel to OutRun. Probably a cameo would be fine. Also, John Carmack owned one of these.

Ferrari Enzo (2002–2004) - A car from OutRun 2/ SP, the main car featured in the promotional material was an F50. But the F50 seems a bit redundant alongside the F40. I like the look of the F40 more.

Ferrari F355 (1994 - 1999) - How about the F355 from Yu Suzuki's other Sega arcade racing sim?

Dino 246 GT (1972 - 1974) Another Ferrari featured in OutRun 2/SP

Ferrari 328 GTS (1985 - 1989) - I dunno, I just like the look of this one. Was featured in OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast.

Probably throw in a couple current Ferrari's to please the Ferrari company... maybe that electric one?

I would ask "why?" but after seeing how that fucking Minecraft movie apparently made bank, I can understand.

If the movie is not entirely filmed with this camera angle, i'm gonna riot

Ah, a classic. I wonder if she has an OF nowadays 😏

Why do they keep on adapting games with zero story? The Last of Us showed that it's possible to adapt a game and make it good.

Yeah, I could pay 10 euros for a movie ticket to see Sydney Sweeney get thrown the fuck out of the car when the main dude crashes it against the rock, then go back and scream at him

Because Mario and Minecraft were so succesful they now want to use the next big game ip that makes kids go crazy. Makes perfect sense, all i see nowadays is kids talking about Outrun.

Testarossa was always my fave "supercar" of the 80s. There was a Ferrari dealership in Tucker, GA, which was just a few towns over. We would go by and drool in high school.
