Michael Bay attacked on 'Transformers 4' set in Hong Kong

Hollywood director Michael Bay has been attacked in Hong Kong while shooting the latest Transformers film in the city, suffering injuries to his face, reports said Thursday.

Police said they had arrested two men in the early hours of Thursday morning after the attack on a 48-year-old man named by local media as the “Armageddon” director, on location in the city filming “Transformers: Age of Extinction”.

The two men reportedly confronted Bay and his film crew in the city’s Quarry Bay district, claiming they were owed HK$100,000 ($12,900) compensation for filming in the area.

Police have now handed the case to specialist anti-triad units reserved for tackling Hong Kong’s notorious criminal gangs.

“When the movie crew was filming, one of the arrested persons was seeking HK$100,000 [from Bay], leading to a scuffle. Another arrested person suddenly attacked him,” police said in a statement.

While local media named the Hollywood director as the target of the attack, police would only confirm the victim as being a 48-year-old “Michael”.

“The right side of his face was injured, but he refused to go to the hospital,” the statement said.

The fourth installment of the “Transformers” franchise starring Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz is scheduled to hit theaters in June.

Hong Kong’s striking Victoria Harbour is believed to be among the film’s locations, along with the city’s dense and bustling streets.

Two brothers surnamed Mak, aged 27 and 28, approached Bay on the set during filming for the American science fiction film and the younger brother demanded payment of HK$100,000 ($12,900), a police spokeswoman told Reuters.

It was not immediately clear why the money was requested.

As a discussion ensued in a busy area of Hong Kong island, the elder Mak walked up and assaulted the director, the spokeswoman said. The elder brother then attacked three police officers who tried to intervene, she added.

The younger brother was arrested on suspicion of blackmail and assault, while the elder Mak was also arrested on suspicion of assault, she said.

Bay sustained injuries to the right side of his face, although he declined to seek treatment, the spokeswoman said, adding she did not believe his injuries were serious.

Filming continued after the dispute.

That is strange. I feel like Bay owes me 12,900 dollars for a destroyed childhood. I hope his face is OK though.

The man was assaulted by mobsters, show a little heart.

Pretty ballsy by those two to just walk onto the set and demand money from the guy in charge.

As much as I hate nearly all his movies and his general arrogance, I'll not revel in this. Actually quite shocked this could happen to such a high profile film.

usually that stuff is handled already, and someone who didn't have a movie with jive shucking robots most likely just got assaulted by mobsters right now.. for them I hope all is well.

I'm pathetic enough to be really happy that this happened and I'm only distraught that it wasn't more extreme. If only Zack Snyder was also involved.

I predict this movie will sale like Gears of War 4 and God if War 4.

And yet it's a Bay Transformers movie.

You kinda get torn on that.

What a weird incident. Bay's gonna make this a film in itself now. Only, in his film version, he was shot in the face by a rocket launcher and survived to take revenge.

I'll never be able to watch a Transformers movie again without the phrase "Jive Shucking Robots" playing repeatedly in my head.

Today I learned that they're making another one of these films and that each previous installment has been more monetarily successful than the last. I'm struggling with how to deal with this knowledge.

I hope the police force will get a bit more serious in fighting mafia-related crimes now, since I can only imagine this will get a lot of visibility.

Bay will probably make racist robot caricatures of the Chinese in Transformers 4 to retaliate, if he wasn't doing that already.

At least no one...else... was hurt.

Edit: Still thinking. I can reach the point of "it's wrong to feel good about him getting physical harm", but I'm having difficulty reaching "No, they're not that bad/offensive."

International pressure is a powerful thing. They may very well move the production as well, and that would be a great loss for the city on an economical standpoint.
That is, of course, if the people in charge are not total tools, which i suspect they are.

...I should probably document myself on hong-kong's political regime later.
