The wait is over for Michael Sam, as the St. Louis Rams have selected the Missouri standout in the 7th round. Sam avoids the designation as the only SEC Defensive Player of the Year to go undrafted. The Rams announce the pick:

I don't know shit about NFL draft, but how he picked that low with DPOY achievement? wut.

Is his statement have that much of effect?

Was anybody watching ESPN just now?

I'm not even joking when I say this, but I could've sworn Adam Schefter just slipped up and said "The Rams have added to their ass rush."

He was originally expected to go mid to late round in any case, because his size makes it awkward to find the right NFL position for him.

Then there are the other factors. He didn't have as good a showing at the combine as expected. His coming out might lead to unwanted media attention. His coming out might lead to unwanted locker room problems due to homophobic players or coaches. His coming out might have led homophobic owners or GMs to not want him.

He might well have gone higher if he hadn't come out, but we can't really know for sure one way or another.

He was seen as a late round pick before coming out and then he had horrible measurements and a bad showing at the combine.

Awesome news.

I didn't watch the draft (even though I probably should have joined in the chaos as a Clevelander....JOHNNY FOOTBALL!!!!), but I've been partially following his story and it's nice to see his story come full circle.

Ow, I read too much to his DPOY award then, I thought he's freakish athletically enough for the league. And that kinda disappointing because he never gonna be relevant enough of player, maybe...

The Big 12 DPOY didn't even get drafted this year.

Rams were actually probably a really bad spot for him to go in terms of making the team.

The competition he has at his position there is insane.

He has a rough road ahead of him. He is a talented player but finding a spot on the rams will be difficult. They have one of the most stacked defensive lines in the NFL.

I'm glad for him. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong, if he doesnt make the Rams roster he will somewhere else.

Yeah he's got his work cut out for him, I hope he makes the cut. Still its great that the Rams took him.

With the talent the Rams already have up front, they'll be able to use him specifically in the type of situations he's good at (put him in and let him rush the passer). If he shows he can get to the QB during the preseason/training camp, they will keep him.

And as far as the talent he's competing against, they aren't drafting him to start. One of the things that teams are going to be looking to emulate Seattle with is having a bunch of linemen that can come in and pass rush. He's not going to have to be as good as the starters.

Oh hey look Progress!

I hope they don't use his sexuality as PR stunt ESPN and NFL

Let the man earn his place, if he fits the system, he should be good asset to the team

seeing people saying he's undersized and then seeing him next to his boyfriend

You must not watch football then. For his position and compared to others in the same position he is undersized.

Anyways, I'm glad he got drafted. Now just hopefully he makes the team, as it will be an uphill battle for him now. But regardless, hr made history, and I'm happy for him.

And they showed him kissing his boyfriend. How will people explain this to their kids?

This joke has been made a million times on twitter already but I question the parenting ability of anyone who makes their kid watch the 7th round of the NFL draft.

So if he won't get a spot on the Rams will they release him or will he just "rot" on their bench?

A roster spot is too valuable in the NFL to use it on someone who has no chance of playing. If things don't work out with the Rams he'll either get cut and go to another team or maybe end up on the Rams practice squad.

Most NFL players (hell, professional athletes in general) are MUCH bigger/stronger/faster than your average person. He's undersized for his position, not in general.

So if he won't get a spot on the Rams will they release him or will he just "rot" on their bench?

If they cut him he will have the chance to sign on with other teams. Depending on when they cut him though, it might take a while.
