Microsoft “in talks” for Project xCloud exclusive games

Microsoft has also added new APIs to the Xbox SDK to make it easier to develop games intended for streaming.
Microsoft is “in talks” with first- and third-party studios to create and release Project xCloudexclusive games.

Microsoft’s Kareem Choudhry made the confirmation at X019 in London as part of a group interview with Australian outlets, stressing that there weren’t any title-specific announcements to make at this time.

“In terms of [Project xCloud] exclusives, we’re in early talks with first- and third- parties, but we don’t have any announcements to share,” Choudhry asserted. “New content and IP takes eighteen months to two years [to develop].”

Choudry stressed that “the first thing that we’re doing is… just lifting and shifting content that doesn’t require any development changes into the cloud. So right away we’ve got a platform that can run any of the 3000 games you can run on Xbox today.”

That said, Choudhry said that specific APIs have been added to the Xbox SDK to let a game “know at runtime [if it is] being streamed or not.”

Calling the functionality “cloud aware,” Choudhry said the APIs enable developers “to make any changes that they want, specific to streaming — things like changing the font sizes or… changing some of their networking code to account for the fact that the server is in a data center.”

Project xCloud is in an active trial in the UK, the US and Korea. The preview program will extend to more regions — and more devices — in 2020.

Am i reading it right!? Games exclusive to Xcloud like, even away from Xbox or Scarlett?
So if I'm reading this right I could have actual Xbox Hardware and/or an actual Windows 10 PC at home and there would still be Microsoft published games that I'd only be able to play through streaming?

Sounds terrible. Though I imagine any such exclusive would only be temporary.
That's my understanding too, only playable by streaming.

Think the games will still be playable on the console but not other streaming services.

That or they are talking about streaming versions of games.

There is an issue with text being too small on phones and the cloud aware API sounds like a way to have a streaming version of a game with bigger text, etc that automatically turns on when the game is streamed.

It makes little sense for any company to actually create a cloud exclusive game.

Chances are we'd just see cloud exclusive features; like simulation games like Football Manager having faster turns (like what Stadia is doing now) or crap like the attempt at advanced physics for Crackdown 3.

So I really wouldn't worry people. Focus on his later comment about how a game can react to whether it's being streamed or not.

Microsoft have been talking a lot those days.
a lot of shit.. and I like xbox.. Fuck
I thought with spencer they would really change stuf for next gen but its more and more looking like shit
gamepas is making them focus on more but smaller titles instead of full on Triple A experiences like sony does.
I dont ever see microsoft making a game like god of war or horizon zero dawn

And now this news, this is stupid

I rather prefer they (Microsoft) choise a tech site like Digital Foundry or Verge and share more info about Scarlett by there. This amount of little pieces of info sounds like PR plus BS to me.

I guess this would be one way to force people to the streaming services. Make exclusives games that they cannot get anywhere else. As long as they eventually come to other platforms I can wait it out but if they are fully exclusive and games that I really want to play I guess I would be forced to use the service.

Yes the wording is a bit confusing, let's wait for further clarification.

Stadia will have exclusives, they already confirmed that. And even the existence of first party studios.

Boooooo! While I think xCloud is a vastly superior proposition to Stadia - not hard to do really - I think it will suffer from a lot of the same problems i.e. input lag, downgraded graphics plus I really have no desire to game anywhere besides my big 4K TV without those issues.

If they do something this stupid, I most certainly won't be playing any of their exclusive streaming games.

It's not about games only being available via streaming. It's about keeping games away from Stadia and PSNow.

it makes sense for some genres.

an MMO that is so massive that it would be impossible to run it on local hardware for example.

but that's among a very small selection of scenario where it wouod make sense.

All said and good but what happens when the servers shut down? Even if they sell physical copies that need cloud computing...in ten years is the game done for when they close the service off for that generation?

I get the whole “it’ll stop working, never to work again” vibes with all this streaming stuff. Stadia is clearly a horrible launch

Nothing confusing to me. It's exactly what it is, exclusive to xCloud, no console version.

I'm gonna sensibly chuckle if they start requiring a subscription to play their first party games from these new studios they bought. But it will be a gleeful chuckle with hopes of playing them on PS5, which seems more and more likely if they are making games "subscription only" in this post cross-platform world.

Figured they meant exclusive to their streaming service as in not on their competitions. Could be wrong but i dont think it has anything to do with hardware, they just arnt going to let those games get streamed on things like stadia.

I got the same impression, it wouldn’t make sense to make a game exclusive to just their cloud gaming service and not the console, unless of course it’s just shovelware then I really don’t care then.

Nah sounds like they are prepping for the streaming wars with PSNow, Stadia and whoever else. This won’t affect Sony much but it could be devastating to Stadia.

1. Denial
2. Reading it wrong

Pick one.

3. None of the above.

I’ll gladly eat crow If XCloud has games that can’t be played on the Xbox console(barring shovel ware) But yeah I’m probably reading it between the lines which is something we on Gaf do a lot, so until I see “This won’t be on the Xbox console” I’ll stick to my-opinion.

It’s not a sound idea, and the article was really vague with details except for the SDK announcement.

Let me give you a hint. Sony doesn't go to their first party to talk to them into making their games exclusive for PS4.
