Honestly, I've never actually experienced any Windows phone. This thing got me intrigued, but I don't want to buy an entire phone and be let down cuz the phone is sub par.
If your in the USA you can get a Lumia 520 for $50 to play with the OS. It'll even be Upgradeable to 8.1

sorry for the bump.

If anybody wants to know more about Cortana, They are currently doing a talk on Cortana right now on the Build Live Stream at 06:59:55

Its more of a general talk of what Cortana can do and how Bing powers Cortana. It would be extremely easy to follow along even if you weren't a developer.

Can't watch right now but i'll bookmark this for later. Thanks killer rin!

I'm more concerned about the apps I'm gonna miss out if I move to another phone. This is my biggest concern when switching a phone. Probably the only reason why i still use iphone, really. The apps and games.

Make a list of the apps you use every day, then post that list to Windows Phone-GAF and someone will tell you if you'll be ok on WP. But, the biggest hole is probably going to be games.

Games are one of the strongest areas in the Windows Phone store. Now, if you're talking about the latest hype-generating games in the cultural zeitgeist, yes Windows Phone usually doesn't get those first. (And neither does Android)

But if you're simply looking for a large, meaty collection of great games, Windows Phone has a huge selection.

As a windows phone owner I would say don't bother making that list. The answer is most of the apps you use are not there.

I like my windows phone for the UI and camera, but I'm very glad I also have an ipad that I use concurrently and get all my apps on (and games on; take a look at the monthly gaf indie mobile gaming thread and see how many of those ever end up on windows phone...about 1 in 50). Windows app ecosystem is still terrible.

I will also answer whatever questions I can in this thread. For free.

When will this come to Windows 8 tablets?

Is Jen Taylor doing the voice just for a few "flavor" responses to cheeky questions, or will she be giving me every answer? It seems like the cost of having a professional voice actor do all that work would be astronomical.

MS is an American company. Europe is not a singular country with a single language. Market share is different throughout, and American market share is very important so I don't understand the complaining.

Windows Phone market share in Europe is something like 10% and about 3% in the US. They should really get their priorities straight.

How do you refer to Cortana? Do you call the program "it" or "she"? Also, if I ask "her" to play me a song will "she" pull something out of my music library?

I did my part today by ordering a 920 off of Amazon.

If you folks over there spoke proper English, it might be easier on MS ;)

I don't even think it's all about the speech recognition, but also the fact that Bing itself is in beta everywhere but the US and Cortana relies heavily on Bing. It just has much less data to work with outside the US.

Welp. What are some good windows phones out there then.
If you just want to experiment, get the Lumia 520. They range between $50-$150 without a contract. Though in most countries they are between $50-$100. If you want a high end one, look at either the Lumia 920 series, the Lumia 1020 or the Lumia 1520.

I assume this doesn't work with Xbox Music pass?
The Lumia 520 works with an Xbox Music Pass plus stuff downloaded to your phone

You can preface questions with"Cortana" and she parses correctly, or you can just ask without using her name.

But how do YOU refer to Cortana when you're talking about it to a friend. Are you like "blah blah blah and "she" has this cool notebook feature".

Yes, and I have noticed that people have a natural inclination to anthropomorphize her. Even if they have no clue who the game character is.

Well, I took the plunge and iinstalled the "Developer version" on my Nokia 1520.

Don't care much for Siri type stuff but so far Cortana is much better at dealing with my accented English than Siri - Siri would just output garbage, Cortana so far is very very impressive in that aspect.

1520 here as well, I'm worried about updating to the dev version. Doesn't it void warranty? Just nervous :/

These updates are taking for freaking ever. I'm still not done installing them.

Edit: Cortana kinda sucks so far (compared to Google Now). Good thing it's only a beta.

At least they already got some funny responses ready!

But yeah, at times it's really bad, but like Google Now and Siri, it only gets better as more people use it. Which makes the incredibly slow rollout even more frustrating. US first, then UK and China and then no mention about the rest of the world. Sigh.
