Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, HiFi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More in Devastating Cuts at Bethesda

Yikes. The success of the fallout tv show prob has all these people moving over to push out a fallout project. Tango is surprising I figured they were a smaller team and the stuff they push out would be good gamepass fodder.

That's probably the reason for the shut downs. These studios better start making some damn good games.

Microsoft has far more studios at their disposal. They should have had hits on a regular basis at this point.

Quantity =/= Quality

105 Tango Gameworks employees out of work. What's the staff count at the other studios I wonder?

What makes you think they haven't already joined Kamuy Inc?

Shutting down Tango is some real bullshit. That was a quality studio that made good games. Not surprised about the redfall studio.
For added context, though, their studio head Shinji Mikami left and is forming a new studio with Hideki Kamiya, so he might just be recruiting away their staff and they're bleeding out.

This would be the third time Mikami has pulled that exact move, after leaving Clover for Platinum, and then leaving Platinum for Tango, each time taking most of his team with him.

Yep, here we go! Keep on proving my point.
Oh, fuck this. Like Playstation or any other huge publisher hasn't also done significant cuts of this size or larger, *and recently. I'm so tired of the cherry-picking and the gaslighting. Name one giant publisher this size who hasn't done lay-offs recently. Even Nintendo's done layoffs in the last 2 years.

If you really believed in your own self-imposed boycott, you'd have nothing to play, *and nothing to play on.
"Exceeded expectations" tells us absolutely nothing, other than that it sold at least one copy.
Ahahahaha. A remaster and an annualized sports title. Ok :messenger_peace:.

No, and of course Sony hasn't closed or done layoffs at any studio either recently :messenger_winking:

Studio's that don't make money, don't produce games that make money will always be in danger, whomever owns them or if they're independent.

Microsoft are running a business and with that comes an expectation that everyone has to make good on the investment Microsoft made in them. Unfortunately these Studio's haven't delivered on their promise and Microsoft has acted. Microsoft aren't any different to any other company, they all require results.

I can understand Arkane Austin, but why Tango? HiFi Rush is one of MS best IPs
The problem is it's selling poorly on Playstation and Switch, and it hasn't made Microsoft any direct sales as it was on Gamepass day one. Andy you'll probably find the amount of people who bought gamepass and Hi-Fi Rush was the first game they downloaded was pretty low, meaning it didn't contribute that much towards new subscribers either

I feel truly blessed for not having anything from Microsoft or running Windows at home. Completely pathetic company.

They have the money to keep these studios open even if they don’t produce a multimillion sales title. If anything, the smaller quirky titles were creating a distinct image for Gamepass. I wonder who’s next on the kiss of death strategy. Obsidian?

Microsoft will never get over the Windows Phone brand apocalypse. Just pathetic.

Because all of their games are being given away for as low as £7?

Now we want to talk about business and return on investment.

Feel free to finally admit that Game Pass is a disastrous model then.

What makes you think they have joined Kamuy Inc?

I think it is likely that many will have gone there or to Unseen.

Poaching is pretty common place when new studios are built out.

Tango was never that big in the first place, it can't afford an exodus of a lot of employees. We'll see once these studios put out their games if the staff are the same.

Holy shit. This is some extreme news to wake up to. Wow, even after the multi-plat release of the best shadow drop ever from 2023

This is a part of the strategy some big corpos employs dude. They never really wanted a company or a group of developers, just one or two people or/and the IPs. With the best ones from the group the rest can never be the same again and you never know what roles the ones they picked will ever have any big influence on games.
Yeah, massive changes after aquiring resources are normal, its usually done as soon as they legally can or in case of project based companies with the same strategic goals (gaming) it usually happens during project phase gates or once they finish their projects, but theyve kept them past those points and i highly doubt that the entire studio was working on patches for existing stuff till now, Tango and Arkane likely had new stuff in the works by now, if they didnt then the whole situation would be sort of self inflicted.

While i can see Arkane Austin not having anything lined up after Redfall and still being stuck in planning phases because most of their team is either completely checked out with new jobs already lined up (because how can you not see this coming?) or gone already, its very unlikely that was the case with Tango. No way this was the plan from the start, MS have fucked up.

Fuck it, get them all here to comment.

@DarkMage619 @Riky

I would dig up some comments from the Activision acquisition thread but really can't be asked, everyone knows the gist by now.

These brainless jokers are just an extension of Microsoft's PR/marketing teams and will do what's necessary on their behalf across multiple forums and social platforms in order for Microsoft to get what they want. But the moment something goes wrong in the exact way every rational person tells them it will, they are nowhere to be seen.
S SneakersSO Isn't the same as these guys, he was the guy who broke the 3P move by Microsoft.

Seriously, add Ghostwire to your wishlist or just download it if you have an upper tier PS+ account.

Ghostwire is awesome. Don't sleep on this game and let it be lost to time. Ignore the idiots who label everything as "Ubisoft bloat" because the world map has markers on it. 🤦

One of the games I've enjoyed the most, I lost all hopes of a sequel since it bombed but now I'm completely saying good bye to it, the small spark that was already left just fade away :pie_crying:

I mean, I get the others and that lots of those people being moved to other teams, but why Tango?

You would be really good at firing people. You have that slimy quality.

A Fucking Idiot
I played Hi-Fi and it was just okay and I never did finish it. Ghostwire Tokyo was unplayable due to the controller input lag on xbox. It was shocking and unacceptable that a game would not only release like that but never be patched.

Won't miss either studios. 🤷‍♂️

Oh I agree, it is likely that if Kamuy Inc is another dev house that they'll recruit former staff. But since we have no idea what this new studio is, it's easier to presume that they haven't been recruited from Tango yet. Tango started out really small and barely grew in that time, I doubt many staff left with him immediately anyway since he fostered talent in creative leads.

There will be more cuts like this.. that last round of layoffs was rather weak considering the overall outlook in the industry.

Yeah I'd love to know why he left, too. Probably moved over to mobile like a lot of other Japanese developers. AAA is harder than ever to make a hit

Maybe he didn’t like being under Microsoft, but considering how they like to leave studios alone and do their thing.. who knows, but that’s a big loss.
