Microsoft making at least four new IPs

Please do the needful and have Rare release the next Perfect Dark that looks like this (@ 1080p, 60fps)....courtesy of TheOddOne:

That screenshot looks really good and if the Halo 4 engine can do those kinds of scenes. I kind of want Rare to make a new Perfect Dark game using the Halo 4 engine with updated with new features to make use of better tech in the Durango.

Are Microsoft studios known for sharing tech and ideas with each other or do they have issues (like Infinity Ward and Treyarch were reported to have hard a few years back)?

I was surprised MS let The Witcher 3 go on the Playstation. I'd expected them to partner with CD Project for the game.
CD Projekt doesn't strike me as the type of developer that wants to be tied down to just one platform holder or service.
Besides, MS will probably get timed exclusives from Bethesda. They should open up a new studio if they want more RPG exclusives.

When I think about it, a darker and more open-ended RPG could be a nice contrast to Lionhead's semi-linear and light-hearted Fable series.

I remember thinking that Codename Kingdoms could have been the "Gears of War" of the action/brawler genre.

What a waste.

There's a chance that they could salvage the project, but I'm keeping my expectations low.

After the failing of Fable the journey and countless other games before it im sure MS understands that Kinect int suited for core games. at best it will be for simple concepts in the game. it will absolutely be a major part though doubt its for combat.

The problem with most of those games was that they didn't do any fresh and exciting things with Kinect which to be honest it still has a lot to prove in terms of being a worthwhile addition and not just a gimmick or just a voice commands device to the core gaming.

Trying to shoehorn Kinect features in games just for the sake of it with no apparent advantage is not the way to go, MS should try to create new experiences or try things that Kinect will actually add something new, exciting and worthy. And then of course it's the other big question about the titles that will require Kinect...will Kinect 2 work at smaller rooms? if they are planning to make Kinect a big part of Durango they better make sure it will work everywhere.

Also I like the idea about Ryse becoming MS's answer to GoW, I really love this kind of games and I'd like to see Crytek's take on the genre...plus now that NG is gone multiplatform and dare I say more PS friendly it will be nice to see an exclusive action title on MS's portfolio.

They likely do share tech, but I don't think Rare needs an engine handed to them. Nuts and Bolts is one of the best looking games this generation, in my opinion, and the stuff they did with Kinect shows they have some incredibly capable developers. Plus some recent tweets indicate that they're working on some very impressive physics based content.

Rare's ability to create a technical marvel isn't one of my concerns; it just has to be creative, visually and in gameplay, unlike Perfect Dark Zero.

Totally agree.

Didnt realize MS has been so busy. Just looked at the wiki and wow.

2012 was specially busy...

BUT, and although I want to remain optimistic, this doesn't really make me excited:

Phil Harrison, the former Sony world wide studios head joined Microsoft as head of Microsoft European Studios and IEB.[15]
Microsoft Studios recruits for new development studios in Redmond — Microsoft Studios - Playful Learning.[16]
Microsoft Studios recruits for new development studios in Redmond — Microsoft Studios - The Connected Experiences.[17]

Microsoft Studios acquires developer Press Play, known for developing Tentacles and Max & the Magic Marker.[18]
Microsoft Studios announces plans to expand Microsoft Studios Victoria to between 80-100 people.[19]
Microsoft reveals the final name of their sports entertainment development studio - Skybox Sports - in a recruitment release.[20]
Microsoft reveals plans to open a new games development studio in London, England to develop various free-to-play, online and social games for Xbox platforms.[21]
Microsoft downsizes Microsoft Studios - Vancouver due to cancellation of Kinect family title "Project Columbia" and announces ongoing development of free-to-play PC title, Microsoft Flight has ceased due to portfolio evaluation.[22]
Microsoft Studios - Vancouver is officially renamed Black Tusk Studios. They aim to create Microsoft Studios' next big IP to rival their most successful series, Halo.
Microsoft recruits for a new development studio in Los Angeles, California to develop interactive Televised Entertainment for Microsoft platforms - Microsoft Studios - LA.[23]

It's like, aside from Black Tusk Studios they are all meant to make social/casual/F2P games....

Why? Witcher 2 tanked on 360. It sold more than twice as much on PC.

Plus CDPR doesn't let themselves purposely get tied down with exclusive contracts. Sony made a much more PC friendly console this time so they get the game too now.

Get used to F2P games because they are only going to grow in number. Hell, Crytek are going completely F2P in a couple of years.

I'm not worried about rare at all. Viva Pinata games were great technologically and game play wise. N&B was great too. Rare's output on the 360 was far better than their GC/Xbox1 output. I think they will shock gamers.

I agree about Viva Pinata - great game - but that was a couple of years ago now. I do hope they can surprise us though.

You know what's funny? If PDZ had been a great game, I think people would have a completely different view of Rare as a company still. Games like Viva Pinata and Kameo seem to be ignored just because PDZ turned out to be bad. Not really fair.

IMO PDZ was really awful single player and great multiplayer. What hurt that game the most is the look though.

Other than PDZ they have put out some great games.

That's cool if you like knowing that most of MS's new studios are going to be kinect/social/F2P driven, for me it's a red light.

Not too bothered if it means studios like Lionhead and Rare can do other stuff. If Microsoft want to appeal to everyone, they need a good mix of internal studios to do it.

More like Assuming that most of them will be doing those kind of games. You still have Victoria, Platform Next and their LA studio. None of which have revealed what they are working on.

There is still the question of which studio the Irrational and Naughty Dog people they hired went to. It wasn't 343i as far as we know, and no indication as far as i know that they went to Black Tusk or any of the new studios that we know about.

That sounds like a great thing to me, having a diverse portfolio of studios is what we should be hoping for. Studios like lionhead/rare bigpark etc can now focus on what their talent is positioned for.

And im sure Victoria isn't working on anything casual. Any those are really assumptions any of those could be making a core game as well.

That's good to hear. Hopefully he doesn't focus entirely on Cloud/casual gaming and branches out to sign some exclusives.

Part of his remit I think is to sign up European development studios - probably to expand Microsoft's presence in Europe - and I am sure he will be looking for Media Molecule type studios to sign up.

I actually enjoyed PDZ for what it was at the time. I would be on board for a new edition of the title.

I was playing the first one ( XBLA HD) the other day and for the most part the gameplay holds up pretty well, still fun to play. I would love to see a reboot that sort of captures feel of the original with better art direction.

it still upsets me that Media Molecule is lionhead remnants....even though they haven't been that great outside of LBP1 but still...

They need to cover all the bases, Durango will require all sorts of games and other experiences if they want to go beyond what Xbox 360 managed to achieve, and we all know that one thing they certainly don't lack is ambition (remember those outrageous claims about reaching a billion of consumers?). I think they have plenty of studios that make core games, sometimes exclusively, and sometimes in addition to more casual stuff. There are already 343i, Rare, Lionhead and Turn 10, now joined by Twisted Pixel, Black Tusk, probably Microsoft Victoria, and possibly BigPark. And then there are all the partnerships with independent studios on top of that.

Then again, I'm also very interested in casual games, and especially in seeing what kinds of experiences their new studios like London Lift and MS L.A. come up with. To be frank, I've grown a little tired of traditional gaming. I've been playing video games since 1985, and despite all the gradual advances we've witnessed over the years, I'm starting to feel like the industry is just running in its little circles. I need something fresh.

It's not a bad thing
Let new studios make social/casual/F2P games and free old studios

I don't know why people catergorise F2P with casual/social? It's just another economic model for games. Planetside 2 is a F2P game but you wouldn't say it is a casual title.

It's rising series that's only going to get popular so I thought it would be an ideal exclusive for Europe from MS perspective.

I still think they will sign something from CD Project tbh.

Well i agree,should be just casual/social.
I know F2P=/=casual/social since i'm playing War Thunder&World of Tanks(and would like to see this 2 games port to durango)

I want to see MS work with From Software again they way they did on the first Xbox.
Otogi 1 and 2 and Metalwolf Chaos being the best things out of their collaborations. Also would love to see a sequel/spiritual successor to Phantom Dust. They already have the team in place on Panzer Dragoo...erm i mean Crimson Dragon, i would love to see that game get another chance. At least re release it on XBLA for fucks sake. Not to mention the guy behind the two games expressed interest in a possible Crimson Dragon sequel that is an rpg along the lines of Azel. Damned shame if that didn't get made.

It would be cool if MS funded a new RPG IP with them.

I'd like if from got another shot at Ninja Blade it had potential

Oh, the first one is still a playable and enjoyable game for sure. I remember having a great time with PDZ's MP at launch; the SP campaign was horrendous though.

If witcher 3 is coming to PS4 then cyberpunk will too. CDPR is not the type of developer who does scummy things like most others like signing exclusive deals.

How is exclusive deals scummy?

Lol this entire industry is built on exclusivity.

Anyone ever play tentacles from pressplay? game looks cool as hell i need to try it.

Tried the demo, it appears like it will be good for those quick bursts of play.

More like they want to get their studio name out to the general public and to do that they need to be on both console platforms.

Well i agree,should be just casual/social.

Microsoft would be stupid to not dabble their feet into the F2P market.
