Microsoft making at least four new IPs

Do you have a hard time understanding the written word? Is context something you fail to grasp the meaning of?

I quoted a person who was trying to defend MS walking away from delivering new retail IPs for over three years of the Xbox 360's lifespan simply based on it not being a good financial move for them. In short rationalizing that MS' profits really should matter more than us having good games to play, that once MS has a consumer locked up they have no need to cater to them ever again.

A slavish devotion and defense of the entity who has you in their metaphorical clutches. Sounds like a solid analogy for Stockholm Syndrome to me.

Yeah...i think we're done here.....

So 4 new shooters? *yawn*

So they go from 4 Kinect games to 4 shooters. We're making progress!

I get that some people have their own bias going into a new generation, but this is getting ridiculous. The phrase you hear the most from people whom prefer the PS3 over the 360 is "They have more 1st party exclusives, so I prefer that system", now we get news that Microsoft is investing some brand new IP's on top of the successful ones that they have already (i.e. Gears, Halo, Forza, etc) & everyone's response is either putting down fans of Microsoft or an over abundance of cynicism.

I understand that this year other than Gears Judgement there aren't any 1st party titles on the 360, but can we at least see how it plays out before we assume everyone of these IP's is gonna be another Kinectimals?

2. How many great retail exclusives have you gotten in the last three years? Because if you aren't a fan of Kinect all MS has published in that time frame has been Gears of War 3, Halo 4, and two Forza games.

3 years? 2010-2012?

Ninety-Nine Nights II
Alan Wake (exclusive for 2 years)
Deathsmiles II (retail JP, Demand EU/US)
Fable III (Exclusive for 7 months)
Halo: Reach
Crackdown 2
MorphX
Gears of War 3
Forza Motorsport 4
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Forza Horizon
Halo 4

I excluded two Lips games and a ton of Kinect games.

I agree that Microsoft needs more variation when it comes to exclusives, but don't pretend that they don't have any.

Maybe MS should have followed Sony's lead, where they greenlighted InFamous 2 and purchased Sucker Punch after the success of the first, resulting in an all around superior sequel with true first party commitment behind it.

I think neither MS or Sony buy studios on a whim, they need to get something out of it. Just like MS recently bought up a bunch of studios for their launch, Sony was in a tight spot earlier in the generation when they saw their dominance slipping away (remember "PS3 has no games" or [blank] will save the PS3 chalkboard?). They've reacted by closing down their less efficient studios and buying up new ones. It's business. Infamous 2, for example, sold well under 2 million so it probably wasn't very profitable but it is a reaction to MS to snatch back some core buyers.

The Xbox, released a year earlier, has expanded (switched?) it's focus to the casual market and gearing up for the next launch (probably similar to the PS2 strategy). I'd bet, though, if the positions were reversed and it was MS trying to grab hardcore market share from Sony that it would be MS making the mid-generation first party studio purchases; there wouldn't be a "lead" to follow.

Well blame Microsoft for that.

no, I blame those who shit up every single thread with the exact same posts. it's frankly making discussing microsoft in any light other than a negative one virtually impossible. I understand people might be frustrated with microsoft's first party output of late (which I don't agree has been as bad as people claim it has been), but that's really no reason to enter a thread and do nothing beyond show their arse and then leave knowing that you've successfully shat the thread up.

I saw this thread, and for just a second I was excited. I thought 7 pages means we must have some juciy info and what do I find? 7 pages of people showing their arses.

"But it's ok to troll, because they don't care about the core gamer."

What kind of garbage reasoning is that, seriously. That is some bottom of the barrel shit.

exactly. it's frankly putting me off even entering threads about microsoft any more. how can one have a productive discussion when you're pounced upon for daring to show a shred of optimism for their upcoming console and games.

Either they're right... Or they will be eating a healthy serving of crow come E3.

It happened on multiple occasions already.

It's console warrior season, let it be.

that's months away and I really didn't want to say anything but I came back to see this thread and got excited that we finally were about to get some juicy info on some new IPs and instead it's seven pages of shit.

What else do you want us to talk about? They're amazing new IPs that graced the 360?

Unless we make stuff up there's not much to talk about regarding Microsoft.

if there's nothing to contribute beyond 'lol kinect', 'lol gold', 'lol abandoned core gamers', 'lol ads' don't bloody post.

So it's the same talking points as Microsoft's Xbox related press conferences then. What's your problem?

that's bullshit and you know it.

Back in 2007, if someone had said "4 new IP's incoming" I really wouldn't have been surprised as it was a near certainty that good times were ahead.

Today though... I dont give a flying f*** as its a near certainty that the majority are going to be kinect rubbish.

If i'm right then its bye bye MS from me. I hope i'm wrong, but I doubt it.

I'm dying to play Sing Party.

It's starting to look like the new ip thing, is just an excuse to bash the other consoles.

You want exclusives, but if it's FPS it doesn't count, if it's TPS it doesn't count, Arcade titles won't count, existing franchises won't counter neither, Kinect/Peripheral games also won't count.

They also don't count if MS doesn't follow them up with sequels, apparently.

Can't wait! Start of last gen Microsoft pumped out a few new IP's but then sort of killed them off, and the sad thing is they were pretty exciting. Can't wait to see what they've been cooking up!

Which is what I'm talking about. Why not make a sequel? It was a successful game. Unless 2 million is somehow awful sales numbers, why not make another?

because unlike that garbage known as Fable 3, it didn't sell 4 million.

I think your disgust in Microsoft's "big four", as you call them, is unfounded. Microsoft supports a lot of games with their wallets and I think that you are holding them to the standard of Sony when it comes to iconic characters and original ips, but it takes time to build that library up. Let us not forget Microsoft came into videogames a generation and a half behind Sony.

Just as an example Microsoft supported
- Alan Wake and it's downloadable content (with a rumored sequel on the way)
- PGR through 4 generations possibly a 5th
- they have supported exclusive content for games like GTA 4 and timed exclusive material for other games.

The point is Microsoft is doing their part, and given time I fully expect for them to introduce more and more iconic characters and Ips into their library.

I think it's pretty obvious what it means. It just has to be something that most of us would be willing to play. Don't throw out sing party or kinect sports or wonderbook and expect anything but laughs.

Now for me personally I don't give two shits about arcade/indie titles but that goes for every platform. 99% of them are a waste of time and don't do anything better than the AAA games that people on here love to look down on.

You can probably thank Activision for that one, it reeks of a Nintendo project rescue. They'd have probably closed Freestyle if not for it. I'd suggest you try Lips or Singstar instead though, they seem more like your kind of games.

Pushmo is legit amazing. Probably better than anything Microsoft's put out since Crackdown 1.

A dose of cynicism is always welcome, but when you see regular people doing the same routine over and over again, you really question if they really care so much about it or are here just to disturb the discussion. Microsoft could improve immensely, take the right steps and those same people would find something to disregard it. This type of movement isn’t the prevalent in other console threads, cynicism there is taken and discussed more seriously between members.

It’s kind of sad that cutting down this thread, only 10% of it is actually useful, the rest is bickering and trolling. Think about that, that really sad.

I care about Arcade titles and I believe some of them are the finest games this gen.

Microsoft has an awful record when it comes to first party/second party development. They pissed Bungie off. They shut down several studios. And their past efforts include Blinx, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Azurik, Kakuto Chojin, Brute Force, etc. They bought and ruined Rare by having them make avatars, for example. Gamers have zero reason to believe in them and it's Microsoft's own fault.

Certain gamers have been hoping for MS to fail since 2001. This is nothing new.

Will one of these IP's maybe be an RPG? Probably not but it could be maybe right? At least one has to be family friendly I suppose, and one has to be a shooter of some kind. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

and on this note, let's discuss what these new could possibly be.

we know black tusk is working on a space shooter with AAA production values, there was a rumour rare were working on a water based racer, but very little to no info on the others. any educated guessed about what those might be?

there's also that marlow briggs trademark from a few days ago.

I hope it's something worth even blinking at at not some abominable "new IP" crap like Kinect Sports. Ever since Kinect, Microsoft has pretty much imploded as a gaming company and the Xbox has become wasteland territory for me. So I hope they can do something new and engaging.

Whats with so many basically saying " oh no, not another shooter". MS has released the fewest shooters in the past few years in comparison to Sony. Much of their retail library has been family friendly if not Kinect games which to a degree is why many have no excitement when hearing of new IPs. We should fucking hope they are attempting another shooter franchise rather than the recent shit for Kinect.

Alan Wake & PGR granted (even though PGR creative director bitchslapped MS feeling like PGR was ignored in favour of Forza)

Timed exclusive DLC though creates nothing. It just stops other existing customers from playing it for a time.

I'd like to see something along the veins of Crimson Skies. I really think accessible flight type games are so few this gen, but I suppose that might be what Black Tusk is doing (though sounds more Freelancer-esq)

I'm I the only one who doesn't trust Rare or Lionhead to make a good game anymore? I'll be interested to see what the other studios put out and if we do indeed get an adventure or RPG(which I wouldn't expect at launch) I may get the new Xbox as long as they aren't made by Rare or Lionhead.

lol Wii u/xbox/vita all get thrown under the bus in threads

but yes this place is super pro sony it's going to be a giant console war as the time comes closer.

I can't wait to see what these ips are

I think black tusk is working on a first person shooter set in space. might be wrong though, but I remember reading somewhere it was going to be an fps.

and god yes, I'd do some pretty low down depraved things for a new crimson skies or a game in the same vein. it still upsets me that snoppy ended up a shell of what the developer has originally planned, but here's hoping we get a next gen sequel. a vain hope, but I'll hold onto it.

Every company can improve... Halo 4 while obviously gets ripped apart on these boards was a great game & still is.. Forza is an awesome franchise, Alan Wake was great and the American Nightmare was great as well, Gears has been a consistent game the whole generation.. Crackdown, Fable 2 (3 was mediocre) we fun, Crimson Skies on the original Xbox

Timed Exclusive to the COD maps, Skyrim DLC, Fallout DLC, GTA IV DLC

They may not have as many titles as Sony but thats not to say they haven't done any good.

I'm not saying they're perfect or that we should sit here and expect every game to get a 10/10, but if we going to clamor for Microsoft to start making new IP's in this next gen, can we at least give them a chance before we ostracize them & their fans

I'm not so sure now.

Senior Level Designer posting:

First person or third person? Or maybe a hybrid?

Senior Gameplay SDE

Action game is ambiguous to say the least.

Posted earlier in the thread. Wonder if maybe Marlowe Briggs could be a character in Black Tusk's game maybe. Still like the thought of it being some hardboiled detective action game.

They are only "Rare" & "Lionhead" in name. Who and what made them those developers changed many moons ago. That is not to say either studio could not bring awesome games to the table, especially given new tech to play with but I don't see them ever being like the good old days.

How is Kinect Sports not a good game? Just because Kinect isn't your cup of tea doesn't make a game that uses it not good. And I don't know how far back you are going because Viva Pinata and Nuts & Bolts are fantastic!

So lets start discussing instead of bickering, eh?

One IP that I loved...but I don't think was exclusive, but I might be wrong...was the Outfit. Fantastic two player mode. I wonder if we'll ever see any WWII games anytime soon.

I don't see GAF as especially pro-Sony, there's always been lots of criticism against all three third parties.

Yep.

Negative Sony and Negative Microsoft are hilarious.

We all have seen Negative Nintendo come out the woodwork in threads.

thanks. it's easy to miss legit info in the tidal wave of shit. it probably is for their black tusk game, but I remain ever hopeful we're getting a detective game. we're long overdue one.

long overdue one, especially in a futuristic noir setting. :D
