As I recall, Sega had a pretty strong launch sales wise. They ran out of steam after Christmas 1999 though.
Their original IPs like Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, and Space Channel 5 really didn't take off either, so that hurt Sega a lot. They were really counting on games like that to carry the system.
And not having EA of course, though Namco (post-Soul Calibur) and Konami also left Sega out to dry IMO.

Unless PS3 is a crazy price (over $400), I'm pretty sure every PS3 that Sony can make for 2006 is basically gone ... there's probably already a good 4-5 million people who will buy a new Playstation just based on the branding alone.
PS3 is more than just the next Playstation. It is also the BD flagship. 2007 is wishful thinking. Sega once played themselves by bagging on PS2 shortages. You don't really need to call your opponent's name, b/c it gives them free press. The PS2 stomped a mudhole in the DC on the long run. The gamers waited, shortages and all. They don't need to play up a PS3 delay, b/c if it doesn't materialize, they've just given the system more press than it deserves, and still have to take the fight to them. These are just snippets of larger statements though, so there is certainly sensationalism at play. But still, if I was MS PR, I'd put a leash on the PS3 talk ASAP. It just doesn't do them any good.

They've repeated the Spring 2006 thing a number of times now, so it must be coming out somewhere in Spring. Be it Japan, or worldwide, it's a fight coming to MS's doorstep in a matter of months. There's been no real sign of Cell production problems yet, especially since they keep announcing more and more applications for it. I don't see them paper launching a new chip. I don't see any serious holdup on the BD side of things either, and they have a lot of studios to satisfy now. The PS3 is carrying a lot of weight with it, and a substantial delay is gonna be detrimental to more companies than just Sony. I see it landing in Japan and the US by summer at the latest. EU? Who fucking cares? It's Sony land anyway, and they always get abused. Sorry, guys, you take one for the team every gen. PEACE.

The fact that pc games are having to be downgraded for the 360 seems to have put to rest any interest.
Even Xbox sites there seems to be a strong negative attitude towards the 360 - although those voices are usually quickly silenced.
MS's PR would be better focused on getting existing Xbox owners to not abandon the 360 than pointless attempts at getting PS2 owners to buy a 360.

Considering how much thrashing the Xbox360 launch is getting, I'm wondering if Sony is just sitting out and waiting so that its playable demos don't leave the lasting taste of shit in people's mouths. Sony hasn't had to do anything to convince people that PS3 is the system to get besides show some trailers and show some names, and they just let Microsoft convince people to not buy their system in the meantime. The Spring launch date has never felt strong, but their timing has seemed razor-honed.
Limited showings before launch are not uncommon for Japanese companies. Handhelds are sort of a different case, but PSP and DS were hard to hear anything about until just weeks before they launched. but this was too low compared to x360 specs, then sony switch their project using a pc gpu, the g70
this take time, another year of development, and there's no more time to make things nice (no unified memory, ps3 has two mem bank of 256 memory, as pc are, no HDR at same time with MultiSampling AA, very heavy AA, and so on, other similarities to be check, g70 has shitty AF for example)
