Microsoft published 6 big games this year. None were nominated for GOTY.

Why should this be at the expense of anything? Just add more games to the nominees.
I think we get too many games that are high quality. At least this year. If I count all platforms and budgets.

I can easily make a top 20 list games this year that are top tier.

I would've had Indiana Jones in that field personally, but this year has been so stacked with good shit that I get it. Some really great games were ultimately going to be left out.

I think the biggest issue is many of us don't play all the games.

So we have no idea there are better games out than what we have played. We are each just picking the best games we have personally played.

This isn't a participation trophy. You have to earn this with merit not by just showing up too.

i have played almost all of the nominees this year and i dont think DK Bananza and DS2 belong on any GOTY lists.

Same goes for Doom, Indy, Avowed and outer worlds.

Havent played Hades 2, but ive seen enough to know that its a safe ass DLC feeling sequel that should be no where near a GOTY nomination.

I just hope Microsoft doesn't shutter their doors before Indiana Jones gets to Switch 2.

I think this is true.

I dont agree with the notion that a game must have good story for it to be good.

Especially when "good" game stories are bottom of the barrel stuff.
Both of you are on copium.

Did Sekiro, Elden Ring, Overwatch or Zelda BotW put an emphasis on nostalgia or storytelling ?

MS just has no games that have the potential of being GOTY.
Their old franchises are stuck in the past with their dated gameplay (Gears/Halo...) and their new licenses don't even get enough financial support or lack real talent to be worthy of the title.

  • RARE = stuck with Sea of Thieves
  • Inxile = Yet another FPS with Clockwork Revolution, though it could be good, it doesn't have the potential of being GOTY
  • Obsidian Entertainment = focused on making AA mid quality games... yay prepare for Outer World 3 and Avowed 2 :messenger_hushed:. To think Avowed had the potential to be the next Elder Scrolls in the beginning...
  • Bethesda = Stuck with their old engine, we'll see if ES6 can escape the comparison with the competition. We're not in 2011 anymore where open world were still a novelty, and their writing team has been abysmal in Fallout 4 and Starfield.
  • Activision / Blizzard = COD will never be GOTY. Only Blizzard have the potential, but their output is not comparable with their golden years.
  • Ninja Theory = given the ridiculous scope of their games, they don't even have a chance to be nominated in the GOTY category. And if we're talking about quality...
  • 343 = they have shown their incompetence with Halo
  • Coalition = they have shown their incompetence with Gears
  • Turn 10 = Only Forza Horizon could win on a relatively calm year. But with the Chinese and Korean competition rising, let's just say the odd of a calm year is pretty low nowadays. Fable looks to be taking way too much time, with full DEI damages.
With Gamepass, the odd of an very ambitious game capable of winning GOTY is low. I guess only ES6 is up to the task, and it won't be an easy one, the RPG gaming landscape has changed and ES will need big changes too to stay relevant.

If you look at game awards, there are no gameplay related categories.

Best level design- nope
Best AI- nope
Best difficulty balancing- nope.

I can go on ,,,,

Instead we have stuff like best actor, supporting actor, story, director, studio….. not sure what the point of all these categories. None of the xbox studios games would win any of these categories, except Hellblade 2 maybe.

What can Microsoft do at this point to garner that GOTY buzz they have been missing for well over a decade now.

The following games from MS studios including ones they inherited from the Activision and Zenimax deals were eligible.

- Indiana Jones
- Avowed
- South of Midnight
- Doom: Dark Ages
- Outer Worlds 2
- Call of Duty Black Ops 7

They had a fairly good year in terms of quantity. Most of these were good to great games. Just not GOTY worthy according to the VGA critics who are mostly made up of critics around the world. Are the studios they have acquired just not capable of making GOTY caliber games? Doom Eternal was nominated in 2020 iirc so they have at least one studio thats capable. And Phil did give them five years. They just failed. He also gave machine games 6 years to make Indy and they still couldnt beat a couple of indie games for a GOTY nomination.

COD Studios are basically never going to see a GOTY nomination which leaves Playground Games and Coalition Games. is there any hope for MS in the near future or do they need to retool? It's not like these games are lighting up the charts either so if they arent winning awards and arent selling well, how can MS afford to keep these studios around?
out of this list the only one who deserved a name was Jones
