So... do people still think Microsoft's silence surrounding the new Xbox is acceptable?

"but they're just rumors", they said, while the Xbox brand name continues to erode with each passing week.

Microsoft's Three Fallacies that they are basing Next Gen around:

A)Tons of people bought Kinect, therefore, tons of people love Kinect and want another Kinect.

WRONG. You packed it in Microsoft, which is why it sold, and then you did nothing with it. It is a complete joke to many, and those who like it will not need any reason to upgrade so their kids can swim in lava and hit balloons in 1080p.

B)Most of our valuable Xbox 360 users have online capabilities, therefore they will be fine with being always online.

WRONG. Just because we have online doesn't mean we want to be held hostage by it. Most amusing is that MS has seen Diablo and Simcity and yet they don't care.

C)Used games are evil and if we ban them, more gamers will buy our 60-70 dollar copies.

WRONG. Watch this fall flat on its face when there is no turnover game economy and less and less of your games are being purchased by those who used to roll one game into the next.

We already know they are going for A), almost have B) confirmed, why on earth would we doubt C)?

Lets all be a little honest with ourselves. How many times in a calendar year was your Internet connection down, for an EXTENDED period of time? What's a bigger money loser, joe gamer who paid his $60+ for his legit copy of a game or mr. Fuck you imma pirate my shit cuz I don't give a fuck? You reap what you something,something...
This year so far 3 times. Each outage about 12 hours long and out of the control of my ISP due to the fact as they rely on another companies infrastructure. I do not find it acceptable that my console is useless for even an hour when I've got functioning power, let alone 36 hours in 3 months. I'm ignoring minor outages like when my ISP DNS server shits itself because as a network administrator I know how to get around that. But when radius servers are down or power to exchanges is cut or an inland fiber cable is cut there is NOTHING I can do.

Well, in addition to any individual's connection problems, the Xbox Live cloud servers were down in December. Xbox Live was entirely down in July and September. And for Time Warner customers it was out in September again. And in October for a while.

And as of April 15, 2010, Xbox Live for the original Xbox is now entirely down forever.

Last year, five times on a daily basis. I have since switched internet provider, but I still had an extended outage yesterday.

It happens.

EDIT: Oh yeah, there was also that time earlier this year when a solar flare wiped out my wi-fi router for a day or so. That wasn't fun.

I'm not surprised. In order to implement a policy like this it's necessary for a company to inculcate a certain level of simmering disdain for your customers.

How can he compare a game console to a vacuum cleaner with a straight face? The issue isn't being unable to play games when the electricity goes out. The phone analogy is pretty ridiculous too. Games on the app store don't cost over $60. If I spend that much on a game I better be able to play it on my own terms

Mine drops cause of shitty wireless sometimes

This was good for MS, now they know the kind of backslash they'd get and won't implement this (hopefully).
But well, Neogaf & some other forums aren't the whole world, so maybe they just won't care...

Yeah, Your average NeoGAF poster isn't your average Madden or COD player, or the kind of person who walked out and bought a Kinnect. Those mass market consumers aren't thinking three or four chess moves ahead. If MS is going for that market the way I think they are, this is just a bump in the road. Price of the box will ultimately determine if all this works now. The average consumer will say "I can afford that new XBox!" or maybe even "Oh, it comes with my cable TV plan for only $8 a month?" and eat it up.

I'm sure the plans for the reveal where set in motion many months ago. The negative feedback has slowly grown with each passing week. They're feeling the pressure for sure. Microsoft doesn't talk about rumors, they don't comment on them.. that's their standard PR response. Up until now, I'd say the silence was fine. The 360 was announced in May and released in Nov. But after this? If it gets any bigger...

I am a firm believer they don't have to say shit until they actually announce the thing, whether it had always online or not. In fact, it might be better to stick it out if it does have always online so this current wave of negativity normalizes the effect later. If this hits mainstream media, I don't think MS will budge either. They really have no reason to so long as its still all rumours.

Pretty simple you can make a lot more money off of consumers who are connected to the Internet. Most mobile games developers depend on there being an Internet connection.

People are not going to stop buying games if they require online. Bungie's Destiny is not doomed because of online nor are any of Blizzards games.

Sure it's a barrier to entry to some people, but it's also an incentive to a lot of people to finally connect their console for the first time. The question is whether you build the console and it's games around the lowest common denominator or not. I was heavily against Microsoft's decision to make the HDD optional in Xbox 360. I don't think you empower game developers to make the most of the system by making features of the console optional. This is why I'm also a big fan of the mandatory Kinect thing too. If you make it optional then they can't design their games around it.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "consumer rights"?

It seems like you initially had a pro-always online view, and are deciding to stick with it out of stubbornness. After all of the valid points people are throwing at you, you either somehow lack the ability to see how this is a problem, or are just clinging to your initial stance because you just can't admit that you were wrong. This isn't about personal preference. This is about consumers' rights.

I understand that he was kind of trolling, but as the Creative Director of MGS, you'd think he would choose his words more carefully.

His tweets are fucking obnoxious.

Oh man, I'd love to be a fly in this guy's liquor cabinet. The city stuff like Grey Goose and Makers Mark aren't going to cut it. He's going to have to go on a 7-Eleven Mad Dog 20/20, Hurricane malt liquor run to completely erase this from his memory. I cannot imagine what this dude is feeling like right now. I would not want to be him when he shows up for work tomorrow.

VG247 lol.

You can read all about it on Gematsu – I won’t rehash it here as an individual’s personal opinion is not confirmation of anything – but the crux of the argument is that games now require online services so a console needing Internet is like a vacuum cleaner needing electricity

Via Gematsu, heh

That was fast-ish

okay, yeah..MS is going to have to respond they're being drench in horrendous news

My thoughts exactly. There is simply no way Microsoft doesn't make some kind of informational announcement. lol wow Sony really fucked MS over BIG time with this next gen transition haha. so amazing to watch.

What can they say to justifying being forced to be online though? At best they can make being online seem desirable but I doubt they want to rattle off the features of the system in haste to respond to this blow up.

I want to go to lay down/sleep, but this just keeps getting better and better.

Oh, what the heck. /grabs phone and browses.

what if they are just rumors? Then what?

It doesn't matter if they are, the point is that it's still extremely damaging to the brand. There is now this creeping doubt where rather than being excited for a new Xbox, people are now more worried about it and are even shifting their attention to the PS4. MS wouldn't have had these problems if they announced it earlier and/or issued statements denying these rumors.

It's a bit like if you accuse someone of rape or pedophilia - even if it's untrue, the person is still seen in a negative light by society.

Oh man, he really fucked up.

This is like everywhere now.

I hope the worst he gets is a slap on the hand.

I cannot see how people are still in denial about there being some truth to the always online rumors. If anything, this fucking solidifies it, unless MS change things up or have some last minute back up plan in case they're too afraid to stick to their guns. Which they should be.

You don't want this much negative buzz around a console let alone an unannounced product, but hey, whatever gets people talking I suppose.

Easily 20+
And that's starting from January 1, 2013.

By the way, this dude is a dick.

wow 20+ times? that's bad. I had maybe two drops this year and it was at like 1am. the only time it might be off is when the power goes out and even then it's technically still on in other powered parts of the city.

guy is still a gigantic douchebag though. I think we're all mostly on the same page when it comes to the next console we're going to buy. even before this guy opened his mouth.

I think it's reasonable. They haven't announced their console officially, until they do there's no reason they should talk about it.

It's not like there are good reasons to comment on rumors : those can be either true of false. If they're true and you confirm them, you're just doing an uncontrolled announcement, with only part of the picture.
If they're true and you deny them, you're just lying and it will hurt you back when you'll have to announce it.
And if they're false, they will disappear as soon as you make the official announcement (if anything, it could even give a better light to them).

If you think this is about piracy, you are wrong. It is about control. I am not interested in a system that will become a boat anchor when Microsoft decides to sunset it's servers. I am not interested to give away consumer rights I have had for 30 years.

Microsoft doesn't even need to make an official statement. Just a few off the record calls to a few journalists and this would all be put to bed. False rumors have a way of sticking sometimes.
