Precisely the same situation. I even set up a desk downstairs, but it was too uncomfortable to set up a laptop with small tablet, so I never want to draw there while I'm relaxing with my GF in the evening. My A4 intuos goes unloved right now because this is a better working setup. Definitely recommend Manga Studio though for keyboardless drawing.

edit: using it on my lap at home, and on a flight. I also use it a lot in the mornings in bed when I wake up early, but my GF is still asleep. The kick stand propped on my stomach is pretty comfy.

Nice, thanks for the info. Now to scrounge up the dough for the version I want...

Has anybody else been experiencing random wifi disconnects? My SP4 is practically unusable right now because the wifi's constantly dropping out.

Been doing some reading trying to decide whether I want the i5 256gb 8gb or the i7 256gb 8gb and all I find is comments about problems with the devices. Has me really worried about purchasing one now especially when even the i5 is going to cost me over $2000AUD.

Will mostly be used for on-the-go coding etc so I don't need one immediately but it would be really handy to have.

I changed my system to Hibernate on power button press a while ago, which solved all of my battery draining issues, but it's quite annoying if you accidentally press it when reaching for the volume controls or handling the system! :O

A friend of mine is buying SP4 pretty soon. Is it okay to buy now or still buggy?
Both! The bugs are still there but relatively few, and the overall experience is pretty great.

Nope.

But it has happened before on other computers I have. Usually it is solved by going to the device manager and uninstalling the drivers, after that reboot and the system should rediscover the drivers again.

Not disconnects, but when waking it up, it has taken longer to connect than usual. Used to be instant, now can take 30-60 seconds.

Gotta say that after a few months with this, it's my favorite laptop ever, even over a macbook pro. I don't use the stylus as much as I expected (wish it mimiced a mouse better). My one wish for SP4 would be a keyboard that could contain a smaller stylus, similar to how DS/3DS do it. The magnet just isn't strong enough.

God I'm so tempted to buy a Surface Pro 4 now but all the bugs and little hardware issues turn me off.

There is no hardware issue. Software bugs, two major once as far as I can tell.

1). Intel video driver
2). Putting it on sleep does not work as it should

Just saw some posters with light bleed and dead pixels but they could just be one off cases.

Doesn't hibernate hurt SSDs?

Nearly bought one nearly new yesterday - price of the base i5 would have got me the i5+type cover+dock. But missed out :(

Think I've set my threshold on price and model - I'll be happy with the m3/i5 4GB but I want at least 10% off, either buying used or with the discounts I've seen from retailers and MS on the SP3 all through last year. Basically in my head getting me the full SP4+type cover for the sticker price of the SP4 itself.

I'm unable to wake this thing from sleep like 50% of the time. I have to do a hard reset a lot. What's up with that? >_>

Is this true, or an old wive's tale? I remember people would often state SSDs and Flash drives had a very limited number of writes.

It's true only in the sense that you're making use of the drive. When you hibernate the system it's memory is dumped to a file on the drive, so you're looking at a file 3+GB being written each time you do it.

But I honestly wouldn't worry about it. The SSDs life isn't very limited it's several years of regular use and I would include hibernating in this. I can't recall it's name but there is a tool which can interrogate the drive and extract an estimate of it's remaining lifespan.

is the surface pro 4 worth double the SP3? I can probably buy an i5/4GB/128SSD SP3 used for £400/425, Vs £850 for the i5/4GB/128SSD SP4 new. Used one is still under warranty. I'd buy a type cover 4 either way

My main worry is fan noise/throttling etc which does seem a lot better on the SP4. But that is a big difference in price..

edit: screw it, on chat to MS now and they're saying my son's school is eligible (or they didn't check) so I'm buying SP4 i5/4GB with bright blue keyboard

People that have had the SP3 for a while seem pretty annoyed by the fan and throttling, so I wouldn't opt into that at this point. Might depend upon what your needs are, and perhaps an M3 SP4 would be a better compromise.

edit: oh, just saw your edit. I'm very happy with my SP4 i5. :) Have fun with it!

now I just have to hide it until I've sold my yoga 700 and mac mini to pay for it :P

Been in the market for a surface pro for awhile now and was super close to picking up an i5/128gb pro 4 but got a really good deal on a pro 3 i7/500gb (cheaper than the pro 4 i5/128 which is why I had a hard time passing it up). Heat and throttling dont really seem anywhere as problematic as reported in the past. Obviously all the updates help along with some other variables but I'm digging it. The battery situation is a bit meh though.

Waiting on fedex to deliver my type cover today. Whats the verdict on screen protectors? Even a need and if so how much of an impact do they have on note taking?

Is the battery supposed to drain while it's shut down (not in sleep)? I've been experiencing severe battery drain while turned off for a while now. I charged it to around 90% and then turned it off as a test and when I came back a few days later the charge was 8%.

I'm using hibernate in lieu of sleep right now, which is a bit of a pain but I've not had problems with it losing power when I'm not using it. With that in mind, it should definitely retain power while off.

When you power off, it actually takes about ten seconds after the screen turns off before it actually shuts down.
Do you have a type cover? When you shut down, touch the touchpad on it, the key lights will probably illuminate. Once they turn off you know you've fully shut down.

If you shut the type cover before it fully shuts down, it actually puts itself into sleep mode instead.

I learned this after accidentally going 100%-0% when I thought I shut it down back in December, then discovered the truth online.

Heads up, boyos: Microsoft will be allowing Surface Pro users who bought earlier models of the company's tablet to exchange power cables for free due to possible overheating issues.

The recall is said to be for cords that are sharply or repeatedly bent or wrapped, according to Channelnomics Europe. The voluntary recall is not expected to target the Surface Pro 4, which Microsoft launched in the fall of 2015, or its non-Pro Surface models.

In the U.S., Microsoft will be providing the free power cord exchanges for Surface Pro, Pro 2 and Pro 3 models sold before March 2015, the spokesperson clarified.

Will see if that's it. I've been shutting it down as soon as the screen shuts off.

Thanks!

Is there a way to save screenshots via the double-clicking of the pen into the clipboard? I'd like to insert my clippings directly into my PowerPoint slides.

They should automatically be saved to the screenshots folder within my pictures .... On your onedrive

I meant...I'd like it to insert automatically into my app of choice just like it does OneNote when double-clicking. I don't want to go into a folder and paste the image in.

I wonder if an upgrade is worth it if I am looking into a slightly better graphical power and the upgraded pen. I have an SP3 (i5 256) currently.
The Iris seems a huge upgrade compared to the 4000 series.

It kept disconnecting so I opened it up and took the battery out. Now it won't even power on or pair with the surface.

I realize might be a pain in the butt, but you could take it to a store and see if you can get another pen to pair with it - and the store is fantastic at dealing with little issues like that.

lol

The NFL no longer incorrectly refers to Surface tablets as iPads, but apparently, the Surfaces for the Patriots were crapping out during the game.

That brand recognition.

It was the network*. Not the devices. Bellicheck was trying to log into the Broncos playbook.#

*Not joke.
#joke.

So I am looking at the M3 version (don't need much more power, hate a fan on a tablet), what kind of battery life are people getting on day to day usage? youtube videos vary from 9 hours to 5 hours it seems.

How long for a full charge also?

Thanks.

So my gf has been non stop complaining about the fan noise on Surface Pro 4. What the deal with this? any work around or solution? When I talking on the phone with her, even I can hear it. So she is definitely not exaggerating.

I know some applications tend to activate the fan more than others. I stopped using Chrome and Edge, and started using Opera. I've been much happier with performance, and I only hear the fan fire up when I'm doing really heavy colouring work in art programs.

I believe the i7 is more likely to fire up the fan than the i5, too.

I thought reviews had it as quiet unless you're thrashing it? Just web bruising or streaming video shouldn't do that?

Well at least mine (i7 model) behaves just like that. When watching YouTube videos via the Hyper app, it doesn't even get warm.

Browsing Imgur however does turn on the fan, but that website's a piece of shit anyway.

My fan usually only turns on when i have a bunch of tabs open and i'm playing a game and listening to music. Cuts out when I focus on just a few things though.

I'm loving my m3 model. Though admittedly I don't run any demanding apps, I've been using the camera, browsing photo galleries and watching hi-res videos without hearing anything.

The fan noise issues seem to relate to the i5 and i7 models in particular.

I just bought an i5 so I'm slightly wary. Quiet would be more important than performance as I have a desktop to go with it anyway.

Wasn't going to set it up yet but I guess I should while I'm still in the 30 day return window.

I got the i5 about three weeks ago and fan noise hasn't been an issue for me. The only time I notice it is when I'm running intensive applications or games, and even then it's not very loud for me.

I'm loving my i5. I do a lot of VFX work, and rotoscoping is much much easier and faster with the pen than it ever was with a mouse.
