Microsoft Surface Pro 4 announced: "better in nearly every way" (The Verge)

Looking to pick a Surface Pro 4 up at the weekend. Was looking to get a book originally but for specs that justify buying one, the price was just too ridiculous here in the UK.

I'm going to be using this machine specifically for everyday use incl. Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop work. Also planning to play some steam games (stuff like Ys, TiTS etc.) on it too.

I'm eyeing the 8GB i5 model. Should be adequate, right?

Considering the non-Pro Surface 3 can do that, I think it is plenty adequate.

sorry to keep bumping... maybe SP4 thread should go into OT Community now?

anyways, I took the pen tip out of my non-functioning pen, hit it off the desk a few times (!!!), put the tip back in and now it works! Hehe.

MS is already sending me a new Pen... I think I WON'T cancel that replacement in case this is only a temporary fix.

Should be fine. Try and get the student discount if you can. My son is only at secondary school but I went via the live chat and they gave me the 10% off.

I talked to Microsoft for like 5 minutes and they are sending me a new Pen.

The guy in the chat seemed to think a battery replacement might work as well (even though the battery is clearly not dead). So I might try to get a new battery in the mean time.
I'll see what I can do.

Tell me if that solves your issue. I haven't had a chance to replace the battery with a brand new one but I'll try that.

I actually have two pens and I'm sort of under the impression that the machine itself is the culprit. My original pen arrived with a broken tip area (still worked but was physically deformed and prone to scratch the screen) and I had it replaced. Neither pen's tip responds/works, just the eraser button.

Got my i5/4gb/128gb S4 this week for a pretty good price of $799! Very pleased with the unit and is just what I've been looking for as far as power/portability/battery life. I was shocked at how good the type cover is!

$799 is a steal for the i5/4gb! I have this model too, I love it.

Can anyone recommend a virtual numpad? I need a numpad for some softwares such a Blender.

I wonder whether I can now disable hibernate on the sleep button!
That's the only thing that's been keeping the battery charged when it's in my bag.

Is this really confirmed?

Well I have the update installed and so far sleep is working as it should be. I can't testify for long-term sleep as I have a day full of work to do (as well as battery drain), but tonight I aim to charge to 100%, put the SP4 to sleep and see how it is in the morning.

In other news, The Witcher 3 no longer BSOD with the Iris model i7 model here. WOOP. Tonight I will see if I can get it somewhat playable...

Hmm, I don't seem to be getting the intel drivers.
The update history page linked above seems to say you should only see four updates anyway:

The following update will be delivered as multiple updates when you view your update history:
System Hardware Update – 2/17/2016
Microsoft driver update for Surface UEFI
Microsoft driver update for Surface Management Engine
Microsoft driver update for Surface System Aggregator Firmware

My SP4 seems to be running better since the update.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this weird wifi behavior with their Surface pro 4. Having the wifi router sit next to me, full bar connection and pinging the router directly, I'm getting pings consistently in the 2 to 3s range while plugged in. On battery, pings drop back to normal in the 50ms range. I could understand it if it was the other way around (i.e. battery-saving reduces wifi strength or something)...

yeah those are the ones I got.

My SP4 seems to be running better since the update.

Mine's been running the fans at max for the past 30 minutes, will probably die down soon enough though. Haven't really noticed any difference (been only about an hour since I updated though).

Hoping the issue with the screen not waking up after hibernate when not docked in is fixed with this firmware.

I've had my power button set to hibernate since I got my SP4.

did the update and I changed the power button to sleep. I just shut down and started back up and I'm going to do some testing. Before I was getting around a 10% battery drain per hour when in sleep mode.

88% @ 9:33....

is there a side button on the pen?

Yes

Just lost 7% battery over an hour in sleep mode with the newest Surface update installed.

Terrible job Microsoft! Maybe next time you can figure it out!

I too didn't know about the button on the pen for a long time!

I did so much artwork wishing there was a button on the pen. Makes right clicking so much better!
Not for me, I want to set it to a keyboard shortcut (Undo) so I work faster like I did with previous tablets. You still cannot do it with the 4 Pro. It's so ass backwards.

Out of curiosity, did you go and check that all of the updates actually installed? Myself and a good amount of other people had to perform at least one sometimes 2+ restarts to get everything installed as some of the updates go hung up.

To me the side button is a bitch to press, it's so low key. But a matter of opinion, I guess.
It's better than the Bamboo Feel pen that I used on my Pro 1. Shorter and the side button is flushed along the surface. At least I could CUSTOMIZE it.

No apps running (aside from background things like my firewall)

100% charge -> 2 hours sleep + 2 hours hibernate
Wake up, still 100%.

Yeah, I agree that it's not too comfortable. I use it for colour picking during digital painting in Clip Studio Paint, and it's always a bit awkward to grip that way. I guess it's a side effect of it being on a flat magnetic panel.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but any Surface Book users here? I'd love your thoughts on the device. Also do you think it's worth to wait for the second version instead?

I think my best advice to new surface owners is to make sure EVERY update is installed before you get concerned. My surface runs as advertised now, but that was far from the case prior to installing the updates. :)

I love mine. The newest patches make it even better. This is the device I have wanted for a long time - especially when it felt like manufacturers were abandoning the pen. I'm not a power user with it, but I have used it more as my universal device as time has gone on.

You're probably at least 8 months from the next iteration.

I feel we're going to see further price drops in the coming months, thoughts on that?

Ya as someone said before, Surface Pro devices rarely sees price drop. I wouldn't hold my breathe. Max you will see is 100-150 less than the launch price.

Speaking based on historical price drop.
