What I'd like to know about specifically is housing. I suppose I should clarify, I would be working near Dulles Intl. airport. What is housing like around the airport? Affordable, ghetto-esque, what? I would be living by myself obviously.

It looks pretty decent from what little I have seen. I doubt it is affordable though, housing is officially insane now in D.C. And technically, I don't think Dulles is in D.C., I believe it is in Virginia.

Dulles is not really D.C., but I don't want to nitpick on your parade. If you're moving near me, I would prefer you stay as far away as possible. Herndon really is not a ghetto city, but I'm not going to say it's completely deprived of urban blight because I'm sure some Herndon resident might say some neighborhood sucks more than others.

A good rule of thumb is that if you want to live in a nice neighboorhood in the DC metro area with all the amenities, you can expect to pay upwards of $850-$1,050 per month for an apartment. That's the cost of living around the damn city.

dulles is about 30 minutes away from fairfax which is about 5-15 miles away from d.c depending on where you live. great area to live in.

it's expensive as hell living here though so good luck.

unless you're going to be living in the slums....

Ashburn is the up and coming trendy area of VA, and it's close to Dulles (near rt. 28). A lot of my high school buddies have moved there. It's like what the Chantilly/Herndon suburbs used to be 15-20 years ago before getting overdeveloped. The downside is that you will be temped to use the "Greenway" section of the toll road to get between Ashburn, Dulles, & Herndon/Reston quickly, and it's ridiculously expensive (like $2 for going 5 miles).

The Reston Town Centre condos and apartments are also pretty cool and in a trendy area, but can be pricey. No. VA is not that cheap.

Look up urban sprawl in the dictionary and there will be a picture of NoVA next to it.

You might find something in the Sterling Park area. Another possibility is Manassas, which isn't all THAT far from Dulles. But, yeah, housing is extremely expensive in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.

IAWTP... McLean is another gorgeous area of DC, Arlington is a very modern-looking city. NW DC looked like it was really nice too. But just stay out of northern DC and you'll be alright

I live in NE. It's bad in parts of every quadrant (NW, NE, SW, SE).

Either way, this is not a market to rent. The average % of income spent on housing in this area is 42%. It should be no more than 25% based off most salaries.

I have lived in NW DC, Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax in the course of 7 years, probably liked Arlington and Alexandria the most out those 4.

I currently Live and Work in NW DC pay the very cheap rent... but I live in a microscopic studio aboive a bodega in a shady part of town... I grew up around where you are referring to rent will be 800-1000K for a one bedroom... houses sell for no less than 200K.

I am moving to Arizona in the spring as even making 60K a year I cannot afford to buy a house in this area... it kinda sucks like that.
